Read in June, 1998
Welty is a gem but many a good reader has lost battles with Losing Battles. I must admit I did finally come to terms with it the second time around and can only recommend perserverance.

I don't know. I like Eudora Welty but this book was supposed to be a comedy and left me feeling profoundly depressed. Some really great descriptive passages, though.

It's well written, but verrrrrrrry slow paced. A different speed for a different time and place.
