My Heart Be Damned (Damned #1)
by
C. Gray
If you're a Hunter, there are only three things you must know about the Damned. The Damned can't lie, can't live without a body, and can't leave you alone.
Amerie Carter has the blood of a Hunter, unfortunately. She is one of a rare line of women who, upon her sixteenth birthday, will come into extraordinary powers used to hunt the Damned; escaped souls from Hell who take u...more

My Heart Be Damned is an action-packed story in the vein of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, complete with a snarktastic and physically capable MC, Amerie. She kind of has to be, since her calling involves hunting the Damned and sending them back to hell (meep!) There's a good blend of tension between the paranormal and the normal (in the form of dealing with her mother's death and her father's new partner) and I'm sure plenty of teen girls will drool over the he's-sexy-and-he-knows-it love interest, M...more

Wow! That definitely exceeded my expectations. I loved it!
When I read the summary for My Heart Be Damned, I was intrigued but worried. The plot was the kind that could easily be done wrong. But, Ms. Gray totally pulled it off!

I'd be honest with you. I never planned on reading this book. At all. I don't know really why - I think it's because of the cover with the girl in a dress. Yeah, I'm tired of covers like that, ok. And I thought this book would be just like every other YA paranormal out there (don't get me wrong - YA paranormal is still my favourite genre ever!) but there's just SO much of them. I them vowed to keep away from this book but yesterday one of my blogger f...more

I really liked how this series is starting off with this first book, but I do have a couple of cons on the main character. I think she was way to sarcastic for my taste even though she was a really great strong female character but just her sarcasm was just far off for me. Like with her dad's girlfriend for an example she kept calling her step monster and just didn't even try to get to know her at all she just assumed that she was some awful person and hated her right off the bat. Even though I...more
This is the first YA Paranormal book that I have really liked in months! In a genre that has become so formulaic, I found this book to be a breath of fresh air.

The last thing Amerie wants to do is be a Hunter. She doesn't want to end up like her mom—dead. But she finds herself in the graveyard looking for Damned anyway. And when she meets the mysterious Marshall, he proves that even if she doesn't want to fight, she has to or she'll die. Amerie is being hunted—ironic, right? A powerful Damned named Seal has discovered a ritual that will give him immortality and he needs Amerie's blood to complete it.

I loved this. Marshall and Amerie bounce right off eachother and comsidering hes the only guy hunter ever makes him so much hotter. I love this scene I just read.
He swiped again. “The Damned don’t fight fair.”
“But you’re not a Damned,” I pointed out.
He didn’t answer. I shut up too. There was only the sound of our swords echoing through the room. I wasn’t sure when we were supposed to stop. Maybe I had to disarm him as I had with the bat. His words ran through my head. The Damned don’t fight fai...more

Channelle Gray’s My Heart Be Damned was awesome! I really enjoyed it. It kept me up reading late and guessing with all the various plot twists and turns. This book is chock full of great characters: kick-ass heroine Amerie, swoon-worthy Marshall (hello, fantastic chemistry!) and all the secondary characters in between.

My Heart Be Damned is a killer story about a Hunter named Amerie. A hunter the Damned, souls who have escape from hell and taken over human bodies. Her family doesn't know. Her friend's don't know. The only person who knows is cocky and arrogant Marshall, a rare male Hunter. But someone has put a bounty out for Amerie and now the Damned are coming after her, shaking up her world. Oh, and her dad has this girlfriend who he wants to move them in with. What more could happen?

Dark and tense, My Heart Be Damned is the perfect choice for people who enjoyed TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angelfire. Amerie's struggle with her mother's death is wrenching, and her spunk will keep you turning pages.
At times the book may feel too Buffy-like, but the mythos Gray draws helps to set it apart. Marshall is an enticing love interest, and while Amerie's friends may read tepid at times, they ultimately bring a flavor of relatability to the book.

Some girls hang out at the mall. Others at cafes.
Amerie Carter hangs out at the local graveyard.
It's dangerous.
It brings back memories she'd rather forget.
But it's her job.

I was very lucky that the author was able to share a pre-pubished version of her book with me. :) I've always had a teensy obsession with both Irish and English literature, so I knew I was in for a treat since Chanelle is English and her story is set in London (therefore she wouldn't have to "dumb down" any of the English wit for us Americans, LOL).
The story itself is pretty fierce. The main character, Amerie, does not mess around. She's a tough cookie with snark sprinkles. And she can take a m...more

I had no preconceived ideas going into this novel. I knew it was a debut and I've been reading a lot lately so I was hoping for something good. I was into about the first twenty pages and although I liked the secondary characters, I wasn't quite liking the MC, Amerie. Then she's standing by the bathroom and Mr. Tall Dark and Sexy says, "It must be my lucky night. Looks like I found myself my very own angel. What did you do to fall from heaven?" And she doesn't get all blushed and gushy, not my h...more
Chanelle Gray has written a very different and very unique novel that I have fell deeply in love with. I connected deeply with the main character, Amerie. She was strong and didn't back down for nothing and nobody. She stayed strong through it all. After her mother had past away a year ago, her life is nothing as it used to be, and she is stronger than ever. She really has no choice. The only thing different now, is that she has decided to no longer hunt. I can't say that I don't blame her. I co...more

Show Me the Pretty:
People talk a lot about covers with girls in dresses lately. Some people adore them. Some people hate them all on principle. Me, I love a pretty dress. As long as it fits (the story, I mean, although, obviously, I like my own dresses to fit me as well). Anyway, the point is Amerie is wearing a beautiful cream colored dress on the cover of MHBD and holding a dagger, which is awesome because...more

Dude! This is one PR that had my head spinning from all the twists and turns. If you’re a Buffy fan, then you HAVE to read this! I haven’t read a good, kick ass heroine book in a while. Just a straight up “We fight the good fight and will whoop evil’s butt” book. This one is fantastic.
Amerie has is pretty darn tough at home. She’s going through a lot with her mother just passing away, her father not handling things so well, and her rough relationship with her brother. Then there’s school, friend...more

I was fortunate enough to read an early draft of My Heart Be Damned and dayum, it's a cracking novel!
First, Chanelle is bloody brilliant at describing fight scenes. I usually find when writers tackle fight scenes, they can come across as a bit scooby doo. But Chanelle handles them brilliantly, making them exciting and believable.
The main character, Amerie, is great too. She's tough, a little damaged but uber likeable - a bit like Buffy. And her problems at home are cleverly interweaved with th...more

This book would probably be a 4.5 for me, but oh, Goodreads why can't you give us half stars?
Don't let the girl in the pretty dress cover fool you. Amerie is a girl who knows how to kick ass and take names! The cemetery factor is truthful because she does like to hang out in them--they're kinda her zen place, although they can also get her into trouble when a demon or two shows up.
Amerie's world has never been totally normal. Schooled by her mother from a young age, she knows she is different-...more

This book actually wasn't too bad. I enjoyed half of the book and it even had a few funny parts. Though the only thing I liked about this book was Marshall lol. The thing that ruined the book for me was Amerie. I just did not like her character at all. I kinda liked her in the beginning but overall I thought she was an immature, disrespectful, whiny brat. In the beginning she's this kick ass heroin who can take care of herself. Then enter Marshall. She starts growing feelings for him and all of...more

I enjoyed the idea of the book. But this book left me very comflicted. The main character is very opinionated to put it nicely, she always ha something to say. Sam, is just like a puppy you feel bad if you kick it but he is useless as a guard dog.Marshall is okay, i guess. Hopely the second book is better.
Soooo...what can I say? This was basically Buffy The Vampire Slayer warmed up. Only with The Damned instead of Vampires. And the fact that there are several Hunters and not only one in each generation. Apart from that, there were just a lot of similarities. A love story with a similar feel to what happened between Buffy and Angel, a supportive group of friends which reminded me of Buffy's Scooby Gang and a lot of other things; though I don't want to go into too much detail because it would spoil...more
Buffy fans get out your stakes - er, blessed knives - there's a new sort of paranormal creature on the loose! No, they're not vampires, but the Damned are downright scary, even when they're... not. Gray has created a character that teens will be able to relate to on many levels, from dealing with sudden poverty, loss of a parent, and the challenge of dealing with a new step mom (step-monster Amerie would say). Then of course, there's the hot-and-cold love interest. Put all that in the midst of T...more

Brilliant book! I couldn't put it down - the plot was eventful with excellent pacing, the characters were really great (though as for everybody's favourite Marshall - I loved Sam better!). I loved all the action scenes and dialogues and chemistry between the two protagonists was palpable. The ending suggests even more exciting sequel, so I can't wait! Highly recommended!
