All my ratings have been pretty high lately, mostly because I choose very carefully what to read next. I value my time too much to purposely read books I know I won’t like. So what on earth possessed me to pick up this book after the Half-Blood debacle, I have no idea.

I value my time too much to purposely read books I know I won’t like. So what on earth possessed me to pick up this book after the Half-Blood debacle, I have no idea.

Most of my friends loved Obsidian and I respect that, I really do. I can even see why, the ingredients are all there: a gorgeous, mean guy and a plain, book-nerdish girl, a love-hate relationship between our protagonists, hero’s perky sister that becomes the heroine’s best friend, the evil ex-girlfriend that spits fire every time our heroine gets close, two clueless friends and a mostly absent single parent… need I go on? However, even when you figure all this out, Armentrout finds a way to sneak up on you. Every now and then I’d lose myself in a funny piece of dialogue or an especially steamy scene, but it wouldn’t take long for me to remember what I was really reading and why it was making me so mad. But let’s start at the beginning.

Three years after the death of her father, Katy’s mother decides that it’s time to move on and that, in order to do that, they need to sell everything they own and move from sunny Florida to a town of about 500 inhabitants in the middle of nowhere, West Virginia. On her first day in the new house, Katy meets her next door neighbors, twins Dee and Daemon. While she and Dee instantly hit it off, Daemon acts like a total jerk and makes some cryptic comments about ‘Katy’s kind’. He is, of course, absolutely gorgeous (Ohmigod, he’s so gorgeous, how could he possibly be attracted to plain ol’ me? I must be imagining things.), and very mysterious. As the time passes, Kat starts noticing that something is not quite right with the way Daemon, Dee and their friends are behaving, and then he saves her from an attacker and well… you know the rest.

Apparently, aliens are the new vampires. No, seriously. Daemon is Edward 2.0 – a moodier, meaner and prettier version of our dear Mr. Cullen. To be honest, this entire book is just another Twilight rip-off. Not flat-out stolen like Half-Blood, but not that far, either. That alone wouldn’t really upset me much since it's not the first and it certainly won't be the last, but what I found unforgivable was that Armentrout felt the need to make fun of Twilight while writing the exact same story.

And when he spoke, it wasn’t out loud. It was in my head. This is what we look like. We are beings of light. Even in human form, we can bend light to our will. There was a pause. As you can see, I don’t look like a giant insect. Or… sparkle. Even in my head I could hear the disgust on that last one.

See? So rude. It’s true that Daemon doesn’t sparkle, but he IS made of light. Pot, meet kettle. Kettle, you should kick pot’s ass.

I’m sure this book will have many fans, but I’m afraid my short and turbulent relationship with Ms. Armentrout is now over.

It took me one scene, meeting Daemon, to completely fall in love with him/the book. And it just got better and better! I literally couldn't stop reading and ended up finishing it in the same day I started.

Okay so I waited for this book forever! I finally got it and read it non stop! It was amazing. I loved everything about it. The story line, plot, the idea of aliens, the characters, the romance and all the hilarious conversations between Daemon and Katy! LOL ;)

It's official. Jennifer L. Armentrout is one of my new favorite authors.

I absolutely LOVED this book. Obsidian is a brilliant, wholly entertaining first novel in what looks to be a promising science-fiction series. I was expecting good things from this as I had, after all, really enjoyed Jennifer L. Armentrout's Half-Blood. Not only did it not disappoint me, it completely surpassed my expectations and was even more enjoyable than I had been anticipating.

So after reading Obsidian, Jennifer was nice enough to write an extra with Daemon's point of view of a couple of awesome chapters that was at the end in my nook. I gotta say, this was more exciting than reading Obsidian. I have always been in favor of stories being in the guys' POV, I feel we get more out of it than in the girl's perspective. Oh. My. God. I just want to say how much I loved this book! I adored Half-Blood and I can’t believe the talent Jennifer has to be able to create another compelling and captivating story with fantastic characters and full of action. Seriously, Jennifer is clocking up as one of my favourite authors and her Obsidian, which is her second book hasn’t even been released yet. Seriously, I can not wait to see what she does next!

So Obsidian, wow! From page one you’re sucked into a mysterious and dangerous world of the Luxen’s and I loved every minute of it. Our main characters were some of the best I’ve read about in a while. Katy being my favourite was strong, determined and independent. She wouldn’t let Daemon walk all over her even though he treats her like dirt and even through out the entire story, she is loyal as ever. My favourite quality of Katy was….she’s a BLOGGER! Woooo! I think this was a fantastic idea; it was so great reading about her filming an In My Mailbox and creating a Waiting on Wednesday post and even reading about her getting embarrassed about her book love. It’s totally true to some of us bloggers. My second favourite character is….Daemon. He is one total swoon worthy guy and you’d be stupid to miss on reading about him. He’s the guy all girls love but then you can’t help hate him too because of how he is, so hot and cold but I honestly think it’s all a front. I loved the banter between him and Katy and the chemistry was smoking hot. So much sexual tension between these too characters, that it’s sure to make you melt.

The storyline was exciting and dangerous with fantastic twists and turns. The Luxen’s have very unique qualities and even the bad guys were awesome. I just want to know more about the world of the Luxens. I have to say, the romance being my favourite part of the story wasn’t even what I was expecting. I was expecting a full on relationship from the get go but nope, Jennifer keeps us readers in suspense and I can not wait for the next book in the series.

You guys seriously need to read this book, it’s not one to miss and honestly, one of my favourite reads on 2011!

"E.T." was the first thing that popped into my head when I read the synopsis of this book. OK that's a lie. I thought it after I read the part about Daemon. The first thing I actually thought was "Hot damn! I gotta get me one of him!"

Take a gander over to the top of the screen, to the left the advertisement and you'll understand what I mean.

The genre’s not an automatic fail–I did enjoy Shiver, and Unearthly, and Rampant, and I’m always a sucker for early LJ Smith. But the writers of the aforementioned novels often critique the genre even as they’re writing in it, taking a careful, feminist approach to situations and characters amid all the smouldering glances.

Jennifer Armentrout’s Obsidian is, unfortunately, the other type of supernatural romance. It’s in the tradition of Twilight and Hush, Hush, featuring a douchebag (the narrator’s words, not mine) with washboard abs as our love interest. If, like me, you lose patience quickly for guys like Daemon, who sneeringly tell our intrepid heroines to go away in between stolen kisses and heavy breathing, then you might want to give Obsidian a pass.

That’s not to say that Armentrout’s book is without merit. Our narrator, a bookish recent transplant to West Virginia named Katy, has a strong, believable voice. Our other primary characters were also vividly rendered, from Katy’s mom, to Daemon (despite his douchitude), to Daemon’s sister Dee. And Armentrout is clearly a confident romance writer. The make-out scene (and, uh, scene where Daemon rubs up against Katy) was genuinely hot and nicely handled.

But I’m not sure I could say the same for the novel as a whole. Katy has a habit of mulling over everything that happens to her right after she describes it to us–and often right before she recounts it to another character. This means that single events are reiterated two or three times, bloating the word count and making the pacing flag. We don’t find out about Daemon’s extraterrestrial origins until the novel’s halfway point–and we don’t learn of the conflict between the Luxen and the woodenly evil shadow aliens until close to the novel’s conclusion. The sexual tension and “mystery” of Daemon’s identity (spelled out for us in the novel’s blurb) just weren’t enough to carry it for me.

And certain elements felt tacked on, particularly the fact that Katy was a book blogger. As a reviewer of books about “a guy with a touch that kills,” you’d think she would have been more genre savvy. Instead, Katy bumbles along, no different, really, from Bella Swan or Nora Grey. At one point, after being assaulted by an alien baddie, she notes that she’s being followed–and doesn’t tell her alien bestie about it because she willfully decides that it must just be some creep. C’mon, girl.

Generally, I felt that Obsidian was a novel with some promise, but which could have benefited from tighter editing. There were quite a few sprawling, difficult-to-parse sentences; at least one instance of a character being referred to by the wrong name; issues with word repetition and larger instances of narrative repetition. With a bit more polish, it could serve as a nice introduction to superhero sci-fi for paranormal fans, or serve as a steamy side dish to the bland I Am Number Four.(less)

I loved this. Wow. If the sequel had been out, I'd have hit "buy" and kept reading. My favorite books are generally contemporary, so for a paranormal, fantasy or dystopian book to drag me in, it's usually grounded in contemporary romance, and the otherworldly aspects aren't complicated or overpowering. (That's all personal preference on my part, and is why I won't read many possibly great books in those genres - because I'm unlikely to enjoy them or judge them fairly for what they are.)

When I recieved this book for review, I squeeled, I mean I actually squeeled and jumped up and down with excitement a little. I was so excited. I took part in the cover and blurb reveal and ever since then I had been dying to read this book. I was not disappointed at all and I loved every moment of it. Most bloggers find it really difficult to write bad reviews, I am the opposite, I find good reviews difficult, I know, I know I have wrote like a gazillion good reviews but I never feel like anything I say will do the book justice and this is definitely how I feel about Obsidian. Nothing I ever say can possibly explain how amazing this book is and how I felt while reading it.

Katy and her Mom move to a small town and Katy is sure it will be very boring. Boy is she wrong. Little does she know her new best friend, Dee and her gorgeous but arrogant twin brother Daemon are aliens. Beings of light. Soon enough she is thrown into a world she never knew existed and she does her best to protect the two people next door she has grown to love. But can she protect her heart from the arrogant, always-an-ass to her, bad boy next door?

I loved this book. Actually loved every second of it. I couldn't put it down and every time I had something else to do I found myself thinking, do I really have to or can I just keep reading? I devoured the book within 2 days and then was so very sad that I had no more of Daemon and Katy to read about.
I think a lot of my friends would be with me when I say I could associate to Katy so much. She is a book blogger, and I definitely share her love of books (obviously) and I just loved it when I saw my favourite bookish memes in the book. I loved that when Katy found out the secret about Dee and Daemon she actually had a reaction that you or me would have. Not enough characters in books have realistic reactions when they find something paranormal and I was so happy to find a book where the character did. I love how strong she is and how she never gave up. When she was given the chance to run away from it she fought back. I think she's a great lead female character and anyone can associate with her.

Daemon, oh what to say about Daemon. I am in love with him. He is officially my new favourite book boyfriend. Ever since he opened the door shirtless with those piercing green eyes I was in love. Yes he's an ass pretty much all the time but no matter what snarky comments he made I still loved him. I loved seeing him and Katy together as it was just so funny and I was always in fits of laughter when they were together.

This book was just incredible and I am so happy I got the chance to review it. This was the first book by Jennifer I have read and I just fell in love with her writing-style and her characters. She is definitely now one of my favourite authors and I cannot wait to read her other books. I will definitely be buying the paperback of Obsidian when it comes out and I will re-read this book again and again. One of my favourite books of the year and now I am so sad that I have finished it. I am super excited to continue this series and I am really looking forward to seeing how Daemon and Katy's relationship continues.(less)

I always hope the hype surrounding a book is true, or at least, well-deserved. In this case, it isn't.

Take some really hot, sizzling character chemistry, two stubborn love interests who know how to push each other's buttons, and add in some awesome out of this world characters and you've got the makings for one fabulously written story. Jennifer Armentrout never fails to make me fall head over heals in love with her writing and her characters. How could I not? Talk about a refreshing, Obsidian will give readers a whole new take on aliens. What Jennifer did with this story was absolutely awesome! You do not need to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy it. Believe me, there's plenty of sparks and snarky come backs flying back and forth between Kat and Daemon, that fans of romance will love it. I loved the whole "boy next door" thing that happens between Kat and Daemon. Who ever thought you could live next door to an extremely hot alien? Certainly not Kat, and boy did I love every moment of her getting to know Daemon. If you guys loved Jace in City of Bones, just wait till you meet Daemon.

As a new comer to a small town Kat's in for a eye opening experience when she moves next door and meets Daemon, becomes best friends with his sister Dee, whom I completely loved and inadvertently gets mixed up into their world. What I love about Kat is that girl not only holds her own, she can dish it right back to Daemon. She's a stubborn, independent, resilient, character who doesn't take crap from anyone, and she can hold her own in some of the fabulous action packed scenes. Plus she's snarky and I love that.

To match her fiery character is Daemon, who takes everything up a notch and completely ruffles Kat's feathers, to say the least. Shoot, if I was Kat he would have ruffled my feathers too. Being a the big TMI fan that I am, I'm going to go out on a limb and say if Daemon and Jace where to battle it out, it would be a close call on which character would win. They both have a way for getting under the main characters skin as well as the readers, and yet you can't help but loving them. Not to be out done by her brother, Daemon's fabulous sister Dee really surprised me with how big of a role she plays in the story. I completely adored her! She's such an awesome, down to earth girls, and she's completely opposite of her brother. She's a well written loyal best friend to Kat.

If you're looking for a book that includes hot, alien boys, plenty of sarcasm, sizzling chemistry (which leads to one hot little scene), the right amount of laugh out loud moments and is over all is one of those books you can't get enough of, then I'd recommend picking up Obsidian! I think YA fans are going to fall in love with Daemon & Kat. There is some mild language found through out the book and one well written sensual scene.(less)

Ever since I read and completely loved the prequel and the first book in Jennifer L. Armentrout's "Convenant" series, I just knew I had to read more by this author. That series is exciting and kickass and one of my favorite reads for 2011! As you can imagine, I desperately wanted to get my hands on Obsidian, which is the first book in JLA's newest series. I admit, though, I've always had the hardest time reading books on the computer. I get so distracted, my mind wanders, and I've only managed to finish a full novel once. But I was willing to try for Obsidian. I'm happy to say that I wasn't at all bothered reading it as an eGalley! In fact, I was easily hooked and read through it quickly. I just couldn't stop reading; it was that addicting! To me, it proved once again that Jennifer L. Armentrout is a definite author to watch.

After reading JLA's other novel Half-Blood, I told her on Twitter that I would read anything she writes. Then I think she replied with something about garden gnomes delivering pizza. I wish I had the original tweet because it made me laugh. Anyway, what I remember thinking was that I would read it as long as there's romance! Because for real. JLA can write a make-out scene! The romance between the main characters in Obsidian, Katy and Daemon... Well, they have a love-hate relationship going on. Sometimes I found all the bickering frustrating because they seriously argued about 95% of the time and I kept thinking, 'Oh, just kiss already!' However, whenever they were together, the tension between them got pretty electrifying. And going through all that made the moments they shared together where there wasn't any fighting totally worth the wait!

Now, the reason for all the fighting was because of Daemon. (Really, I can only blame Katy for a little bit of it. haha) Daemon can be an ass. He was a very big one when Katy first met him. He had his reasons though. He's not very trusting of humans and is willing to do whatever he can to protect his sister and himself. It didn't excuse the way he acted, but I felt like I understood why he's not so nice sometimes. And as the book goes on, it seemed Daemon just enjoyed getting under Katy's skin. He definitely had his moments, of course, and that's why I couldn't help but to like him!

As for Katy, I liked her from the beginning. She didn't allow Daemon to run all over her and scare her away. There was this one awesome moment involving spaghetti, and I was like, "YES!" I seriously wished at that moment I could go into the book and high-five Katy! There were a few times where she made some not-so-great decisions, but I couldn't bring myself to hold it against it her since she usually ended up proving herself. Another thing I liked about Katy was that she was a book blogger! I could easily relate to that. (Was anyone else waiting for Katy to make a My Book Boyfriend post featuring AIDEN?) This is probably the first time I've read a book where the main character is a book blogger, and I thought it was a unique and fun thing to include.

Obsidian was highly addictive and filled with all kinds of funny, surprising, HOT, and action-packed moments. Jennifer L. Armentrout really knows how to make it easy to get into a story! I also loved that it was about aliens because I don't believe I've seen much of that in the YA category. I'm very much looking forward to reading the next book (and the rest of JLA's novels)! Seriously cannot wait to find out what happens next with Katy and Daemon and to know more about the other characters. I instantly clicked with Katy- and not just because she is a book blogger even though that was awesome -, I found her to be a lot like me. Her reactions, her emotions, her attitude were all very realistic and I could completely relate to her. I particularly appreciated her reaction to finding out Daemon was an alien. First of all she actually HAD a reaction! Secondly, she questioned it. Much better than the "Oh so you're a (insert paranormal being here)? That's neat! So…*awkward silence* wanna make out?" reactions I've too often encountered. I loved her friendship with Dee. I think Dee is a great person and she's absolutely a lot of fun. I was also very happy with Katy's mom. She was down to earth, funny and caring.

Daemon, yes, you need your own paragraph. Daemon is very likely going to end up on the top of everyone's "most sexiest male character" list. He is definitely on mine! He is irritating, infuriating and downright bullheaded, but holy damn is he ever hot! Daemon is incredibly protective of his sister and others of his race, but even when he was being… difficult, it wasn't without reason. He did love to push Katy's buttons and I mostly found it hilarious (though if I was her I would have punched him in the face). What came out of his mouth actually made me gape with disbelief a few times. Despite his loveable personality, he is an incredible character who fit extremely well with the story, even more-so with Katy, and gave it a very attractive vibe.

Together, Daemon and Katy were fantastic. There was enough chemistry between them to give Marie Curie a run for her money! Their relationship was very love/hate. You never knew what Daemon's intentions were from one page to the next and it drove me crazy as much as it did Katy. However, you still couldn't help but adore him to pieces.

Now for the plot, I found it was very exciting and well thought out. I really enjoyed Jennifer's take on the aliens in Obsidian: how they got there, their powers, the villains. It reminded me a bit of Smallville but it was still original and incredibly exciting. The book definitely does not lack in action and the climactic ending was completely fulfilling.

I really have no negative aspect to mention in regards to this book. It was everything I was hoping for and more than I was expecting. No doubt that Jennifer is the up and coming author to watch out for!(less)

Whilst I was aware of this novel before Stephanie read and reviewed it, it didn’t strike me as something that I needed to read until that point. There are many unfavourable comparisons to Twilight floating around. This is not an invalid point.
