Tommy also learns of another danger and it has to do with his amethyst-colored eyes - eyes like his fathers. Beings with eyes like Tommy’s have reason to fear for their lives!

This book had a very interesting plot. The story was cool. I really liked how it had a bunch of high-tech gadgets and technology in it. Tommy was the best main character I could want in a book. He was brave, kind, smart and knew how to stand up to bullies. There is some violence but nothing graphic. There’s a creepy part to the plot where these evil aliens want to capture Tommy for his eyes, but it isn’t told in detail and it is only a small part of the plot.I thought the cover art wasn’t the greatest because it’s so dark (you can’t see it too well). The trailer is at the bottom of this post and it’s pretty hard to see too (or at least I think so). I liked how Ms. Brown described Earth and the alien world so well. It was interesting that both worlds had good and bad points. On Earth you have a lot of freedom and can choose to do what you want but there was sickness and violence. On the spaceship, there was no sickness (and supposedly no violence but there still was) but you were pretty much told what to do and what job you would have. It is an awesome action book and has a great message about fitting in.

I would rate this book about a 2.5. The story starts off very fast paced and honestly a little bit confusing, then after a bit it slows back down and stays slow for the rest of the book. I found it hard to get into, not sure if it was the story or what. I did enjoy the technology the alien's had and what they were able to do but everything seemed to easy for them. I would have liked for there to be more action in the novel, possible the author could have put in some parts of the aliens' technolo...more

I have given this book 5 stars! I do not give out five star ratings often but I truly think this book deserved it!
I had been looking for a story just like this and then, BAM! I met Debbie Brown and there it was.
This book is science fiction but that in no way means do you have to be a sy fy buff to enjoy it. This book could easily be enjoyed by people of all ages and walks of life.
Amethyst Eyes is much more than just your typical sy fy read.
The futuristic space world and gadgetry are fantastic! Not to complicated and so believable. Their presence is not so overwhelming in the story that you forget this book is really about a young boy trying to find his place in foreign territory, while overcoming the impact of substantial loss.
You get to grow and connect with Debbie's characters on such a great level!

Tommy's character was not afraid to show emotion, which is something I loved about this book. Often male characters appear so stoic and even, if I dare to say, typical.
From the gripping beginning, where Tommy looses his mother in a car accident, to his new and complicated relationship with his father, the reader is able to relate and feel just how conflicted Tommy must be. As he develops a new understanding of himself and his world, the reader grows right along with him.

Debbie was able to create two worlds for Tommy that were both detailed and believable. She kept Tommy's character and how he fit into his worlds real as well. This was the other thing I really loved about Amethyst Eyes. Tommy remained who he was throughout the story. Often in fantasy and science fiction novels, the characters will enter their new world and suddenly they are vastly different. They develop crazy powers and become an expert on their new surroundings in such a short time. This is where Debbie's characters differ and it made the book so much more enjoyable for me.

I just love it when a book brings "the full experience" to you. This book did just that for me. You never quite know what is in store for Tommy next and it leaves you with just the right amount of questions.

I really hate it when I am Twitter friends with an author, they send me their book to review, and all I can say is it is ok. I really want to love all books, but I just can't. They aren't all for me. This happened to be one of those books.

You know those books that suck you in, you get wrapped in the stories, feel like you become one of the characters, and actually care what happens to them? That didn't happen here. I just couldn't get into this book. You know those books that suck you in, you get wrapped in the stories, feel like you become one of the characters, and actually care what happens to them? That didn't happen here. I just couldn't get into this book. It felt more like I was being told a story than experiencing one.

The characters didn't seem real to me. Let's start with Tommy. What 15 year old boy has an ideal relationship, so much so that it is almost creepy, with his mom? And likes to be home-schooled? And calls the dad he has never met father? He just accepted the fact that his dad was from another planet, and was whisked away without being asked, not to mention being taken from the hospital. People would have been freaking out. He just seemed too grown up for what his character was supposed to be going through. And after all Jayden puts him through, he still wants to be her friend. Maybe I was a horrible teenager, but if any of the things that happened to Tommy happened to me as a teenager (or even now to a point) would have had me screaming curse-words at anyone who would listen.

And his dad, The Commander. What was with all the "knowing looks?" What did he know? Because I was never told. I get that as a reader I shouldn't know everything, but I also shouldn't be left in the dark. I just never connected with him.

The bad aliens; it was implied that they were the same race, just different beliefs (like a different region of sorts). They had spies on the ship, obviously. It would have been silly to not have them be on the ship. Then suddenly they were these scary creatures. But I did think it was pretty cool that the Native Americans knew about all the aliens, and were able to help out.

I was also a little put-off by the not so subtle hints that anyone that eats meat is a savage. I was actually reading one of those parts while I was eating dinner, which happened to be chili with beef and pork in it (which was delicious and homemade). I have nothing against people or characters that choose to not eat meat. But that is a hot button topic for me when people are trying to push their choice on me. There is actually not enough protein in the world for everyone to be vegetarian ... but that is a topic for another day. I actually put the book down for a couple days when I read that being hinted at for the third time, and that may be why I was more critical as I continued to read.

Lastly, what makes the amethyst eyes so special? Do they (or the people who have them) actually have special gifts? Is that just a myth or is there basis in fact?

Like I said at the beginning, I really wanted to like the story, there were just some things that got under my skin, and other parts that felt too forced. But you should read it, and decide for yourself. I give this 3 stars, but it just wasn't for me.(less)

I admit when I first picked up Amethyst Eyes I was expecting your typical coming of age story, ie: boy losses parent, is taken in by his other parent, meets new people, and must make sense of it all. Got all that? Good. Sounds simple enough, right? Nuh uh. That’s what I thought and I was wrong.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The characters are deep and the action sequences are exciting. While the technology is interesting, it doesn’t overshadow the fact that this is a story about people living and growing while facing adversity. This is not a book that I “should” like considering who I am… But I liked it anyway. Somewhere along the line, I have almost lost my ability to read fiction. I am generally not interested in young people
or stories about young people. And I am no science fiction buff.

As a person who would much rather read a good book than watch TV, I thought that this book was perfect. It led you on a roller coaster ride of emotions, tears, fears, anger and triumphs. The characters, Tommy and Jayden, were true 15 year olds and acted accordingly, which is very refreshing.

Although this book will not please everyone, it is a MUST read for teenagers. It is an easy read with down-to-earth reading that keeps you turning the pages..... Can't wait for the rest of the trilogy.

Oh, this was like a breath of fresh air from the books I've been reading recently. Loved it.

First off I just want to say that I devoured this book from start to finish. I truly enjoy sci-fi readings but few are able to capture my attention and this book, from the start, took me on a great journey.

What makes this reading so extraordinary is the mixture of sci-fi, spirituality and real life emotions. Simple and yet so rich in imagination. The characters are so well drawn out and well detailed that I was able to slide myself into the story has one of them.

I feel that the first thing I need to say before I start this review is that I never used to like Sci-Fi. In fact, I avoided it completely, certain that it was not a genre I was going to like. The problem being that my view of Sci-Fi was that it was all like Star Wars, Star Trek, or Battleship Gallatica; shows that really did not appeal to me at all. Then, I realised that avoiding an entire genre based on a few shows/films was a silly thing to do and since then I have realised that while I’m still not a lover of sci-fi shows and movies, I am finding some absolute gems in the book department. And that is what brings me to Amethyst Eyes. This was a book that I really enjoyed reading. It was inventive and imaginative and was a real treasure that I think everyone should go and read when they get the chance!

So, you’re now probably sitting there after reading that and wondering; but why three stars? Should I explain my rating system to you? Maybe. I do not like half stars. I find them irritating, a sort-of scapegoat to the five star system, if you will. You might as well be grading it out of ten if you’re going to use half stars. With that said, this book was truly difficult to pick a rating for. At times I raced through the words, making me know I was ready to give it four stars and then at other times I felt that it really should be a three star. In the end, because I couldn’t quite come to a decision and was in that middle “grey” area, I have decided to give it three stars.

I’ve already said this, but I feel it needs reciprocating. I loved the inventiveness of this novel. Debbie has really dove into her imagination on this one and bought to life a new world, one full of bizarre technology and frightening dangers unheard of here on Earth. It was such a unique galaxy and space and I just really loved reading about it and hearing more about it. I found myself wanting to know more about the world, wanting my own questions about the world answered instead of Tommy’s. It was magnificent and is, I am starting to realise, one of the best things about sci-fi novels. The creative worlds that authors imagine is just, dazzling and inspirational. And I was certainly inspired.

The characters in this story were really interesting too. I liked Tommy, while at the same time I disliked him. It was hard to get where his head was at because, well, let’s face the facts, I’m not a fifteen year old boy, but I feel that the fact I couldn’t always understand his decision or his thoughts just showed how well Debbie was able to write his character. I really liked Jayden, especially when you really got to know her and she came out of her shell. She was a great character to root for and I certainly found myself rooting for her! Tommy’s dad was really well placed as well, he was the Colonel, he had to be distant but at the same time he was a dad and he wanted to be protective and care for his son and the switch between his two roles was often admiring. I liked how he took control whenever he had to but that, at the same time, he was willing to lose it when it was necessary. He was a great character to get to know.

This story was not short on action. From the very first chapter, the reader is thrown into the action of it all and while it does stop, there is always something else just waiting around the corner. These action scenes were also well written. They weren’t confusing so you didn’t know what was going on but were well thought out and described everything in just enough detail. Some of the non-action scenes did seem to go on for a bit, it was at these parts that my rating of the book slipped but I also know that these were necessary scenes for the novel to work, it was the background that needed to be explained for other parts of the story to work as well.

Along with the action, the plot of this story was really interesting. I liked witnessing the journey that Tommy took, but also that of Jayden and his father. I was intrigued with how things happened and I really wanted to know what would happen next. It was interesting to witness how it was all connected and worked together and I just loved reading through it all. I especially loved the ending. I loved how it all came together, how the changes all the characters went through affected them and how they acted in this final scene and how it has essentially set the scene for the next ‘chapter’ – so to speak. The ending truly grabbed at me and made me want to read more and I am certainly waiting on tender hooks to see if another book will be written. In a way, the ending is ambiguous, it could be left where it is but this reader hopes that there is more on the way.

This book is one that is easy to read, it is fun and interesting and creative. It is action-packed and really grabs a hold of the reader. It has a really brilliant storyline and the ending really packs quite the punch. It is not a complicated read and is definitely something that everyone should consider picking up and giving a go. It deserves all the love it can get and I hope that it gets it! I would recommend this to younger readers (aged 15-18), readers who love sci-fi and adventure and to anyone who just wants a light but imaginative and fun read that will hook them in and make them wish for more.

I thought this book was amazing. The Author did a beautiful job at connecting real life emotions and drama to an imaginary world. A world with a different culture, where children are just children and are supposed to be silent and innocent.This will all change after the arrival of Tommy, who shows courage and determination and proves to his father how culture on earth allows children to become contributing members of society. I really enjoyed this book. I grew up watching startrek and all with my dad and i do believe this is the first book ive read based mostly in space but it was great. The characters were likeable (tho personally i wouldve flipped more than Tommy did), i liked his dad alot and Jayden is a hoot. The story line was amazing and original and well developed. There was only one part that i had to go back and make sure i didnt miss anything, but after reading further that too made sense. Great job!

I found myself quickly identified to the main character, Tommy, who's life gets turned up side down in the first few lines of this novel. For most people the teenage years are ups and downs and a time where many changes take place but for Tommy it's the discovery of new people, places and ways of life. I found myself always wanting to turn the next page to discover, with Tommy, the new world he had been thrown into. There's a good mix of adventure, mystery and humor. Great read!

I loved this book. I got so into reading it that I was finished before I knew it. This is a great read and definitely worth the time.
Tommy’s character, his interactions with the others and the new world he finds himself in come alive so vividly. You can’t help but be drawn into this amazing story. There’s just so much going on that I can’t get into it all. You’ll have to discover it on your own. I’m with Blair, I want more.

Truly fantastic. I was impressed and surprised at every turn. This imaginative work takes you on an incredible adventure while remaining so simple and real. Utterly believable, heartwarming and emotionally complete. You cannot help but fall in love with the characters and their story. Amethyst Eyes is an excellent read that I will recommend to all of my friends! The beginning draws you right into this amazing adventure that is filled with discovery and intrigue. The author has created a very complete, very original world combined with real emotion and real-life situations. At the end of every page, you find yourself wanting to read more. I really enjoyed this book. The characters are rich and interesting. You are quickly pulled into their world and dynamics. The book is told from Tommy's POV however you get a good glimpse into those surrounding him. Amethyst Eyes brings you fast paced action, heart felt moments and pretty much everything in between. Time and money well spent! My only regret was that it came to an end. I want to know what happens next.

I strongly encourage you to pick up this book and join Tommy on his journey. You will not be disappointed. The characters come alive and you cannot help but feel for them as you share the adventure. From deep inner turmoil, to an adrenaline rush, or a truly touching moment, you will find it all here. The world created is impressive yet believable.

To be honest I had no idea what to expect when I started reading this book clearly aimed at young adults but I got pulled in soon enough. I liked the pacing, the style and length. It had the right amount of details never bogging me with stuff I could get lost in or confused with, the right amount of suspense to keep me wanting to read more and anytime I had questions because things didn't make sense, it was answered in the next chapters.

A joy to read and can't wait to read more from this writer...more
