I almost returned this book (and the next one, Merciless) to the library without even reading them - just so many books and only so much time.... so glad I found the time to read these! I will say the book would have been a 5 star if the romance would have been stronger and if the ending didn't seem so rushed. All of the books by Mary Burton do not seem to be strong in the romance department - so if you like a lot of romance in your romantic suspense novels - this one might not do it for you. I ...more

One would think that a victim stabbed through the heart received a quick death, but the truth was, the agony the victims of this serial killer endured before the death stab was horrendous. Each woman suffered agony when they were branded several times with a four pointed burning star, only then did the killer put them out of their misery.

Ten years previously Eva Rayburn and her sorority sisters were celebrating the end of the school year. That party turned into a nightmare Eva had had to live th

This is my first Mary Burton book and won't be my last. I really enjoyed this book, the characters and twists and connections kept me from putting it down. Maybe it was just me, but I never figured out who was doing all the killing until I was smacked in the face with it and the keeping me guessing made me enjoy this even more.

I pick Merciless up from the library tomorrow and can't wait to see what happens next with these characters. If you haven't read Mary Burton, I highly suggest you start!

Recommends it for: anyone who enjoys romantic suspense, crime fiction, and serial killers.
The fourth of Mary Burton's books I've read, this is among her best. As always, the characters pulled me right alongside the subplot and the tense opening scenes. DISCLOSURE: I'm fortunate to work with Mary on some of her titles and so I'm possibly a bit biased. BUT I do know how much I enjoyed SENSELESS and the soon to be published MERCILESS and I hope other fans of romantic suspense and crime fiction will as well.

This is the third book I've read by this author, I like her style of writing and the mystery was great. I know these books are labeled as Romantic Suspense, the romance is very light, in fact this one had the most romance in it of the other books I've read. The characters were interesting and likeable. I will be reading the next book in this series. Very enjoyable suspense with light romance.

I really liked the character of Eva Rayburn. Being sent to prison at the tender age of seventeen for killing a local rich boy Josiah Cross who had beaten and raped her and forever imprinted her body with a burn in the shape of a 4-pointed star from a necklace she wore was an injustice no young girl should be forced to endure. Eva could never remember what happened the night Josiah was killed but her three “besties” (ummmm with friends like them - who needs enemies?) at the time testi

Eva Rayburn is in her late twenties (although she looks like she's 16). She's strong, incredibly smart, beautiful, tough, and an ex-con. Ten years earlier, while partying with her sorority sisters, Eva was raped and branded with a star-shaped pendant. A fire is set and she barely escaped with her life. Unfortunately (or depending on how you look at it, fortunately), her rapist, Josiah, dies in the fire, and Eva is convicted of killing him. She is fairly certain she did not kill Josiah, but she c ...more

Who do I recommend to?
If you enjoy a well written mystery.
If you enjoy the not perfect character.
If you enjoy tough as nails heroines!
Why did I read it?
I was intrigued by the blurb.

My Rambles:
This was a well thought out mystery, and I completely fell in love with the characters (even though I didn't think I would). I'm usually not a fan of the down on their luck character. I prefer the whole "perfect" world thing, cause really? I'm reading to get away. I'm reading to have fun, not to be rem

My Thoughts:

I'm always looking for a good thriller and Senseless didn't disappoint. This book was a page turner from the very beginning as the story starts with a brutal killing and then shortly

Favorite Quote: “She thought for a moment he would reject her. She wondered if she could bear the rejection.”

Eva Rayburn lost 10 years of her life when she was convicted of murder. But she has served her time and now just wants to get on with her life. But when the business she works for is set ablaze and a dead body is found; the crime scene is eerily reminiscent of the very crime Eva was incarcerated for. A crime Eva isn’t even sure

Again, as I've said before, I'm a sucker for a good romantic thriller. I also like them on the grittier side, as opposed to the books that harken back to the woman-in-jeopardy suspense novel. Senseless fits the bill, all the way. Eva is a tough, tortured, survivor of a heroine with bitterness, anger & loyalty - as she should since she was convicted of a murder she is sure she didn't commit. Since she can't remember that complicates matters. The gruesome killer who stalks the victims has grim ...more

Book started just a little slow but WOW once it got going. She had some twists I didn't see until the end. I loved the characters and that they are not flashy people but real with real problems. This was a great story with twists and turns. Should it start out slow for you keep reading because it gets going and doesn't stop.

I was pleased with this. It’s labeled as a romantic suspense, but the romance happens fairly late in the book. That being said, I think it made it more believable, because we get the time to know Eva and Garrison and root for them to get together. Burton gives us a plot that’s thorough without being overly complicated. She’s also able to make us wonder about the true motives of almost every character, even those that should be solidly on the good side of things. I actually was unable to guess th ...more

This book hooked me from the beginning and did not let up.I Had no clue who the killer was until the reveal. I usually guess right away. It was about 80 percent suspense 20 percent romance, but the suspense was so good I didn't mind it. Highly recommend.

First off, this is not a unique storyline. I have read several thrillers that revisit secrets of college life only to have them haunt the girls later in life. That being said, this is the first of a series that will surround sisters and cops. The characters are well developed, the thrills take off midway through the book and the beginning chapters are somewhat too mysterious to "get into" the book. That being said, it has one heck of an ending, some really good thrills and a few side stories tha ...more

This time of year is great for sinking your teeth into a juicy mystery, and Mary Burton has delivered up two for us over the next two months.

The first- January’s offering- Senseless is the story of Eva Rayburn, who returns to her home town of Alexandria, Virginia after serving ten years in prison for a crime she cannot remember committing. Hoping to regain some normalcy in her life and possibly gain some answers about what happened that dark night ten years past, Eva soon finds that her past is

Eva Rayburn has returned home after serving ten years for killing the man who raped her. She has built a new life for herself with help from King the man who owns the bar where she works and lives. Now women's bodies are being found with stars branded on their abdomens and stabbed in the heart. Eva has her own star brand and Detective Garrison is asking questions as the women being killed are Eva's sorority sisters who testified against her. Now Eva has her own nightmare as someone is trying to ...more

This was the second book of Mary Burton's that I've read.

It revolves around Eva who was wrongly convicted of murder years ago. When she gets back to her former home town, her ex-college girl friends start being killed.

Two things: the ending was a cheat

and: it reads just like the other book of hers I've read. I don't know which book was written first but she chose a formula and stuck to it for this book.

Saying that, I'm now going to read "Merciless" which is billed as the sequel to Senseless :-)

Good book. Strong likeable protagonist--not too battle scarred and cold. It was fast paced, it had me guessing till the bitter end almost. Lots of plot twists and turns! All on all a good diversion from my series books! Though I won't be rushing out to buy merciless with Eva's sister and the partner to the male detective in This story about another psycho killer...come on now!! Alexandria ain't that big!! How many wack jobs do they get!! That is a bit of a reach! Lol

MARY BURTON’s southern family has always enjoyed tall tales and a good yarns. Early on, MB realized that Story had tremendous power to inspire strong responses such fear, laughter, love and even sorrow. It didn’t matter if the tale was found in the pages of a book, spoken in hushed tones around a Girl Scout campfire, or spouted at an old fashioned southern family reunion. This appreciation of stor ...more
