Seattle writer Neal Stephenson is one of the most gifted and intelligent of all contemporary science fiction authors. Beginning with Snowcrash (a kind of cyberpunk parody), and continuing through Cryptonomicon, and its predecessors/successors, the three novels comprising The Baroque Cycle, and then on to Anathem, his inventiveness never seems to fail him, whether he's writing about allied cryptographers in the Second World War, or an entirely alien – but strangely earthlike – planet. I'm not sure why Goodreads has all these novels glommed together. I have to admit I don't have the patience to add each one separately.

Cryptonomicon - Haphazardly plotted, but exhibiting frequent flashes of brilliance. The description of Manila weather at the start of the book had me sweating right away!
