4 stars/Non-Fiction; Home Improvement

This new book by Architect-Author Duo Dickinson called Staying Put could not have been released at a better time. In the current economy, fewer people seem to be relocating than in years past. This book is a great resource for do-it-yourself homeowners everywhere.

Packed with creative ideas and full color before and after photos, Staying Put introduces homeowners to a variety of options for re-creating their space to better fit their current need rather than t

I found this book on the non-fiction shelf at the library and thought it might have some interesting ideas for organizing as well as remodeling. There are 80 million single family homes in the US, and 18 million home mortages larger than the value of the house. Many people are stuck, so the book is filled with ideas of making small or large changes to make people content in the home they have. I love my house and never even want to move -- but ideas are cheap. Lots of good pictures but nothing ...more

If you like where you live but think the house is not quite what you need, this book has great ideas for remodelling and renovating. The approach is architectural: looking at how to create better spaces from the structures already there, but it is not a technical book for the architect or builder. It helps the average person to consider the architecturally sound potential that their home might have, which they could then discuss with an architect. The pictures of house transformations are ...more

We have been in our current home more than a dozen years and haven't changed much since we moved in. Between needing to do some major upgrades and wanting to do others, I was really excited about reading this book. While the chapter on kitchen remodels was useful and informative, with some good tips and ideas to consider, I found the rest of the book rather dry and boring. Maybe that's because a new kitchen is near the top of my home renovation wish list, so it caught my interest more than the ...more

This is a timely book that would help a lot of homeowners right now who can't change homes. It has a modern/hip feel that would make people want to flip through this book. More DIY-ers would find this book refreshing (rather than serious contractors) for its text and images. I personally like before and after photos and this book has plenty of it. Those who are looking for something more detailed with how to's and hard specs won't find it here. If someone was curious about remodelling and need a ...more

adult nonfiction; home renovations. Unlike other books I've seen, this one provides a hefty amount of perspective when considering how your vision will hold up over time (as trends come and go) and lots of helpful advice on a wide variety of topics. It stresses using what you've got (existing walls and structures, and especially in preserving the style of the home) for the least costly renovation work, but also provides lots of inspiration if you want more. I'm not about to rip into any walls or ...more

Less about budget options more about larger remodels (finishing basements, bumping out walls, etc.) A lot of before-and-after comparisons that are super instructive. And a format that is easy to read and actually seems to be a logical progression of things to know and to keep in mind as you move forward with bigger (aka, needs a permit and a contractor) changes.

Best part of this book is advice on what to think about when planning a remodel and hints on dealing with the process, loosely categorized by room. I think there are some nice before and after photos, but I’m just not good at comparing these in 2D.

A lot of ideas here. From small to large. Lots of before and after photos and floor plans. It's about getting the most out of your house not to sell but to live in.

Finally, a common sense book for someone who wants to...or has to...remodel the house they're in.
