Anyone who knows me knows that I absolutely love survival stories. It is probably my favorite genre ever. Before this, I have read five YA survival books - three of them made it onto my list of favorite books ever. Alas, this was the first that I really didn't like. In fact, I liked it so little that I couldn't finish it. It wasn't worth it. This was one of the worst books I've read in a while, and I'll certainly never be reading anything by Northrop again.

A lot of the writing and characters were VERY contradicting. The whole plot line seemed kind of dull, if I think about it. And the ending was anticlimactic.

Scotty Weems tells in his point of view what happened when he and 6 other students along with a teacher are trapped in a high school in a small town that no one knows about and that is about to be buried by tons of snow since they are trapped in the, shall we say, heart of a life-threatening blizzard that no one in that town has ever experienced. Throughout the book, it's filled with little thoughts of "What if?" and "I hope..." from Scotty that he or any of the others do not act on any of those thoughts because all they do is sit around hoping for some miracle.

While I liked the idea of the plot initially, it was something I've heard of before. Northrop does make some fine points that are sometimes subliminal but for the most part worth thinking over. I just didn't like the way the characters were portrayed in the story.

For example, Scotty has a crush on Krista, whom he is stuck with in the school but doesn't act on it in fear of being rejected. I just felt that the story could have been a little juicier if there was some action between Scotty and Krista or any of the other characters. But, no, Scotty basically sits there half the time, opens his mouth, not knowing what he's saying, and never makes a notion of what to do. However, he does make few minor smart moves and thoughts in the story.

Also, what truly pissed me off was that ONE scene that did not necessarily need to be written and it was when one of the other 6 students, Julie, whom I pinned as sort of an airhead who asked too many questions when it was was NOT the time for them, and was leading boys on with her "Oh, I'm helpless" vibes, triggers the boy that has a crush on her, Pete, to assume that the bad boy of the group, Les, has molested her. And of course, there's a two paragraph length of just Pete and Les semi-brawling it out when it was just a MISUNDERSTANDING. In short, that part was unnecessary to the plot, like adding too much pepper to an already good meal, though it did, in a way, lead to the rising action that FINALLY happened in the book (at the end).

And the ending, God, did I find it so unnerving the way Scotty was basically picked up by a helicopter and that was that. I just felt there should have been some sort of closure between the characters and not with Scotty basically talking about he was magically saved by angels and having small talk with said angels who were actually just volunteers looking for survivors. I kind of expected something like the Gone books for this one. I know, I know: it's not sci-fi, it's realistic fiction and there's no evil alien life force or autistic five year old controlling the whole thing.

Whatever. I wanted them to start eating each other.

I'm glad that I wasn't annoyed by the ending, as many other readers have been. It was definitely abrupt, but it made sense to me. This is a quick read, with great descriptions, and a strong voice. I expected it to get even more horrific than it did, and was pleasantly surprised when it wasn't as bad as it could have been. The events I didn’t like about this book was Pete got buried alive of 8 feet of snow. Another event that was very scary was the whole school was trapped in school for a couple days. What the author did right: it's an interesting set-up, with a random group of students and a teacher trapped in a high school during an unprecedented northeaster which has dumped a tremendous amount of snow in a short time. Wow. The first thought that comes to mind after reading Trapped is, "It moves!" There is never a dull moment, and it reads very quickly.

Trapped is a classic survival story, involving seven teens trapped in their high school during a snow storm. Oh, but this isn't just any snow storm. It snows for about six days straight -- heavy snow -- and buries the school and everything in the town in about 18 feet of snow.

It was a natural in a way that earthquakes and tidal waves are natural disasters. It wasn't a storm; it was whatever comes after that.” (02) Scotty the main character and his friends are among the seven kids that weren't picked up from their high school that day didn't realize that soon they would be fighting for their lives. The others are Krista and Julie two of the schools popular girls, then Jason and Pete, lastly Les the lonely bad boy and Elijah a boy who is quiet and doesn't have many friends at school. The first two days the kids didn't take being trapped in their high school seriously they thought of it as a fun adventure. That in a day or two they would be rescued but after those two days: they hear nothing from anyone. The snow continued to pile and pile and the electricity goes out and so does the heat and the pipes freeze. They are trapped together and forced to get along for survival. A theme in the story is never take the necessities in life for granted because in these types of situations just a bit of heat or some food or water could mean the difference between life and death.

Scotty the main character is my favorite character in this novel. He is my favorite character in the story because he is very relatable protagonist he is kind and thoughtful while having many teenage qualities with it. His voice was simple but descriptive and really likable. Scotty is very sweet and sensitive.“I was thinking: Is this what love is, feeling like you've been spun around underwater? Forgetting how cold you are, until she looks up and you look down and you're embarrassed and the world comes rushing back in? Or is love not being able to get that image out of your head, the image of the moment right before she looked up?” (150) He relates love to being at the beach and being swept in a wave. He is a very deep thinker and is very sensitive unlike most boys who are very immature. Although Scotty is immature like any teenage boy he was also snarky and witty while being funny and ironic. I believe the author intended this reaction. I believe he wrote the book this way in order for this character to be liked by everyone and his voice to be strong but at the same time relatable and sensitive.

Overall the book was excellent I loved the suspense and the survival edge to the whole book. Although I hated the ending i would have loved it even more if it was one more chapter! The ending was abrupt and annoying i think the book deserved a better ending. I would recommend it to others that may be in-between books or are into survival genre. It is a short read but a great one I couldn't put it down. I would recommend it mostly boys because the language is very relatable to teenage boys but I also recommend it to any teenager because it was a great read.. The ending was the only thing that I didn't love in the whole book. It kept me entertained the entire book and I highly recommend it.(less)

I was so excited to read this book, mainly because it was snowing outside but also because I love this sort of thing.

I did really enjoy it but it does have its downside in my opinion. So we have seven teenagers stuck inside their school whilst snow is piling up around them. A terrifying thought. I would just hope as a teenager I would of made some better choices than those in Trapped.

I really enjoyed this book even though it was Young Adult Fiction. I love the Gary Paulson books and books about survival situations. This book is something you can read in one day. The characters are interesting and like-able and distinct. The teenagers are realistic. The main boy reminded me of my nephew and what he would do in the same situation. What it's about:
Everything seems like a normal winterly school day when suddenly the blizzard starts.
Pupils are sent home early but Scotty Weems and two of his friends, Pete and Jason, stay in their high school longer to work on a shop project, relying on Jason's dad to pick them up later on.

As the time ticked and ticked away and the snow was getting deeper and deeper the students began to realize there was no one coming for them. What were they supposed to do? Have a sleepover at the school for a night? That didn’t seem so bad. But when one night turned into a whole week, it kept the kids wandering if they could stay alive for much longer. With the power out, no water, no ways to go to the bathroom, no heat, no sleep, no comfort, and most importantly no cell phones the students were tortured with little way to survive.
They used their heads to find the answers to the mere impossible questions. How are we supposed to get food? That’s easy go down to the cafeteria were in a school you know. Where are we supposed to sleep? I guess the ground would have to work. How do we stay warm? Look for blankets and use our coats, gloves, and hats. Where are we supposed to go the bathroom? Well we have a bucket. How are we going to see in this dark? We will follow our sense of direction of the school and hold on to the walls as we go. Last, how are we supposed to get out? That question no one had an answer for.
Then one student had a brilliant idea. He was going to somehow get them out of this school alive. But there were obstacles standing in his way, one of them being named Les. He was the main bully of their high school who everyone was freighted of. Jason stood up to Les, which ended up with him having a black “face” and millions of bruises all over his body. He still was devoted though. He believed he should go out and save the rest of them from what is going to happen. So he took is woodshop project and imagined he would ride it on the snow all the way to town.
You will have to read the whole book Trapped to see what really happened with Jason. Did he make it to town? Did they all get out of the School? I can assure you Michael Northrop intended the ending to surprise the reader. And with my experience it completely does. I recommend reading Trapped since you will value the lessons that the author teaches and the experience you will have reading this novel.

Like many young readers, I have difficulty selecting books without a recommendation, so recently I decided to try my luck reading something from this year’s Pennsylvania Reader’s Choice List. This was when I was first introduced to the book Trapped by Michael Northrop. I was intrigued by the cover and introduction: teenagers struggle to survive against the odds. In the hope of finding a new fictional tale perhaps similar to the Hunger Games, I picked it up.
Trapped, published in 2011, takes place in modern day New England at Tattawa High School. It opens with Scotty and seven of his classmates waiting to be picked up from school. As the students are busy thinking about things like basketball practice and video games, they fail to realize that the biggest nor’easter the United States has ever seen is in their path. At first it seems like fun to spend the night at school, but reality sets in when the teenagers realize the cell network is down, the power is out, the food supply is low, temperatures are dropping, and the snow continues to rise. Will they ever be rescued? Does anyone even know they are there? The teens are forced to take somewhat drastic measures to ensure their survival and they end up developing a new respect for each other.
Unfortunately, Trapped was a major disappointment and was overall unimpressive. Although there are some good aspects to the story, like the constant problem solving element that keeps it interesting at times, the plot leaves something to be desired, as do the characters. Instead of clear events that lead to an ultimate conclusion, the plot drones on until finally reaching a seemingly overdramatic end. The protagonist, Scotty is a regular teenager who is somewhat likeable if not for his very dull and obvious point of view. To make up for his dull view he often says things that are overdramatic and comes across as “trying too hard”. All other characters are introduced by Scotty directly and little more is learned about them through their actions or interactions. Although there is a love interest, it is fleeting and seems to be forgotten by the end of the book. There is little interesting dialogue between characters and nothing is left to interpretation by the reader. My least favorite part is reserved for the ending which is cut short and seems like a let-down after all you have read. I would reluctantly recommend this book to younger readers who desire an easy-read with themes that don’t require much comprehension. In short, the only thing that Trapped left me pondering was why such a book would make the Reader’s Choice List.

I think the big picture of this novel is just surviving and staying alive. Also working together to stay alive because eventually someone might start becoming psycho and crazy in the head and want to do something bad to themselves or to others. But so far its not that bad because they always have something to do, like listening to the radio or talking, sleeping, or working on the go cart.

This book does not remind me of any other book that i have read, but it does remind me of a movie I have saw once. Except for these college student took a snowmobile ride out into the woods and they find a old school to stay in for the night because there is a blizzard coming. And they were trapped there for a couple days. Then they died because a man murdered them one by one.

I am currently reading a novel called Trapped by Michael Northrop. This book is mainly about survival and how to stay alive with very little food and no electricity or heat. There are seven kids in one big High School in a small town in New England. These seven kids have to work together to stay alive and not freeze or starve to death. The snow is so high that no person could ever walk outside. They are trapped because there is no way out. The snow is higher than the doors and pretty soon it’s going to cover the windows. They don’t know how long they're going to be in there or if anyone is coming for them so they make some ground rules for each other. One, only one person can go to the bathroom at a time. Two, you have to eat only a certain amount of food so they have more for the next days. Three, if someone has a phone they give it to the person that is going to the bathroom so they have a light to see. For now, they have to sleep on wrestling mats and use blankets from the nurses office. Some people have to share because there isn't enough for everyone. They are so bored because there is nothing to do, so they walk around school to find something to do. They see in the nurses office that there is a radio. It doesn't work but one of the boys in the book is a good handy man and got it to work. Its a little scratchy but its fine for them. So all they do all day is talk and listen to music.

One of the main characters in this book is Scotty,he is a sophomore in High School. He talks all throughout the novel.There is also Elijah, he's the weird and quiet one. There is also the two girls, Julie and Krista. They don't do much except sit around and talk. Then there is Pete and Jason. For school, one of them is working on a gocart but now they're planning on to make it stronger and better so they can find help in the blizzard. That night when everyone was sleeping, Scotty woke up to a big loud noise. He thought it was just in his dream but that afternoon everyone heard it. They went to the place where it was and saw that the ceiling caved in. As soon as they saw that they knew they didn't have much longer to stay there.

The author does a wonderful job in describing the relentless falling of the snow, considered at first an inconvenience since the students' cell phones don't work, and then later, much more than that, as it rises higher and higher. Reading about the varying reactions to their situation was interesting, and like a couple of other reviewers mentioned, I actually figured that things would get much worse than they did. While different factions form during their time inside the structure, and they manage to scrounge up food from the cafeteria, things could have gone awry in a sort of Lord of the Flies fashion since the last remaining teacher had ventured out in the snow. Since the story is told from the point of Scotty Weems, readers know that he survives somehow, but the fate of the others isn't clear. There are hints throughout the narrative that everyone won't make it, of course. I also liked how basketball player Scotty realizes that he has misjudged some of the others, Les in particular. Readers never really get to know much about Krista and Julie, the two girls trapped in the building,and they seem to have been included in the book to provide sexual tension and a reason to fight. But anyone looking for romance won't find it in this book. Anyone looking for a sense of closure won't find it either since readers never find out if all the others are rescued and what happened to the teens' parents driving in the snow to pick them up. Maybe it's safe to assume their fates, but I wondered about how all this affected the survivors in the same way that I wondered what life would be like once everything was back to normal for the Andes plane crash survivors in the classic Alive. There are so many possibilities in this story, but many of them are not realized. Still, the book kept me racing to the end to see what was going to happen, which is always a good sign. I kept trying to imagine that much snow--snow that is over the head of a tall man, more than 8 feet of snow, and its weight on the roof of the building. WOW! It's a good thing I read this before winter comes to the Pacific Northwest. (less)

I’ve read many books with unsatisfactory endings. Really, really unsatisfactory ending. But Trapped wins the prized gold star. I started getting a bad feeling when I reached those last, crucial pages… The book’s running out. Okay, come on, how’s this going to work… He wouldn’t just leave it like this. Would he? Answer: Yes. Yes, he would.

Teen Death Books are a hot commodity right now.

I'm not knocking it; in fact, I understand the appeal. Be it survival fiction, dystopian fiction, or a combination of the two, a novel's tension is amplified when it becomes apparent that survival is not guaranteed for any of the characters.

Trapped
The book I read was Trapped and it was written by Michael Northrop. It was published by Scholastic press in New York. My opinion of this book is great and exciting because so many events happen in the book. It was a fiction book so the setting was at Tattawa High School.
