I launched right into this book after reading Arson, not entirely sure what to expect. There's certainly another mix of danger and romance, although there's emphasis on suspense and it's more of an action novel than anything else. I definitely couldn't put it down once I picked it up and after two books I've grown attached to the characters and drawn in by the uniqueness of the plot.

The scientists at the asylum are trying to get Arson and Emery to use their powers, only they don’t know that is the goal. They don’t know what it is the asylum wants from them. Arson keeps having these dreams where he is roaming the halls of a school he went to. Things happen in the school that is supposed to be reflective of his life and the use of his power. The scientists don’t really understand the dreams he is having because some of them aren’t from his memories.

Emery is kept in a dark room with no windows and she slowly starts to lose hope until someone stops outside her door one day. They say that they are going to help her. Meanwhile, back at home, Emery’s parents are having a hard time with her disappearance from the hospital where her mother, Aimee, works. This is causing a rift between Aimee and Joel, Emery’s father. After realizing that drinking isn’t going to find his daughter any faster, he hires Redd, a private investigator, and then sets out to do his own investigation. Will Emery and Arson be found? Will they ever leave Salvation Asylum? What will happen between then and the scientists at the asylum?

This book really kept me on my toes. There are so many POVs in it. It doesn’t subtract from the writing though. If you haven’t read Arson, it isn’t hard to follow whom the characters are. I thought it was good to see how everyone was thinking. It was interesting to read about Arson’s POV in his dreams. Dreams are a weird thing and Arson didn’t always remember things that had happened in his life that were brought up in the dreams. It was a puzzle for him. Meanwhile, the asylums is watching his dreams and are confused as to why he is having dreams (or memories) that don’t belong to him. You don’t get a good sense of Arson’s character in this book because most of the time he is either dreaming or drugged, but there are instances where the true Arson shines through. I really liked Vega’s writing style and look forward to reading more in the Arson series.

I love it! It has Emery's mask and Arson's subject number 219 all burned and creepy looking and I can't help but shiver. It fits perfectly.

Ashes left me... speechless.
It also left me with my heart pounding out of my chest, and my hand slightly shaking while I closed it and took a deep breath.
Now, I know all of that sounds really cliche, but it really was that good.
And my only question is; What is going on in your head, Estevan Vega??
Seriously.
I don't think I have read a book that has disturbed me as much as Ashes did.

Amazing darkness, amazing humanity, simply - amazing. Ashes is a story that will brand itself upon your mind and burn there for a very long time.

I truly fell in love with Estevan and his writing from the moment I read his first release The Sacred Sin. His writing voice reminded me of an early Stephen King or Dean Koontz. Arson and Emery find themselves locked away, hidden from the world in a bizarre place. Left on their own, they need to find themselves, and come to terms with the events that brought them to their current residence. Everything is surreal as they learn more about themselves and their surroundings. Held captive against their will, they will need to lean on their survival instincts and come to terms with who they are, and who they are meant to be.
While Arson brought us the story of a misplaced teenager, one who could start fires with his mind; Ashes brings us the terrifying sequel, in which Arson is held captive by those wanting to experiment on him to fulfill their own needs. Ashes is a much darker read than Arson and the psychological ramifications will have you reading long into the night. Vega is at the top of his game as he threads together both Arson's and Emery's stories, as they discover what brought them to the Asylum. Is Arson the monster he always thought he was, or is he something more? Can he achieve more? Is there a greater purpose for him? All these questions are asked as the reader partakes on a highly disturbing and dark ride through the underbelly of Salvation Asylum.
New characters show their faces, and their pathos will leave you feeling uneasy as you press on through this volume in Arson's saga. There is a lot of new information thrown at the reader, but the flashbacks to the first novel make the transition as seamless as possible. One cannot help but root for Arson and Emery as they struggle to free themselves from their captors. Joel and Aimee's struggle for closure, and their pursuit for help after Emery's disappearance adds a much-needed dimension to the novel. Following their struggles gives the reader a reprieve from the darkness hidden within the Asylum before heading back into the depths.
All in all, this is a compelling read. Eloquently written and darkly disturbing this one will stick with the reader as they delve further into the book. By no means is Arson's story done as Vega has left the ending open to continue in another installment. One can only hope that Arson will find the answers to his questions, and the solace that he craves. (less)

This book total blew me away. While the first book was really a set up for this Ashes, Ashes gave me a whole new reading experience! The plot line, new characters, and a great back round history that left me begging for more.

I loved Arson! I thought that book was absolutely amazing and brilliant.

Ashes is…OMW! Words fail me right now. Literally. I’m just dumbfounded and amazed by this book. It’s soooooo incredible!

Let me start out with a simple statement. I liked Arson, but I loved Ashes. Loved it so much that I devoured it from cover to cover in a matter of hours. To those of you who might have started on Arson Gable's journey, but haven't yet had a chance to dive into this book, hurry up and snag a copy! Once again the driving force of this book is the darkness that is inside people. Arson and Emery each battle the internal voices that are driving them mad. Bad. Good. To those of you who might have started on Arson Gable's journey, but haven't yet had a chance to dive into this book, hurry up and snag a copy! Once again the driving force of this book is the darkness that is inside people. Arson and Emery each battle the internal voices that are driving them mad. Bad. Good. The lines are so blurred now it's all in question. Estevan Vega has created a world that is equal parts inside these character's head, and inside the penitentiary like asylum that contains them. Ashes is a much darker read, and it delves much further into who these characters actually are.

Arson and Emery are of course back in this sequel, but new characters make a debut too. There's Adam, a fellow prisoner and confidant. Then of course there are the captors, whose story is sinister to say the least. Finally, we get to see further into the enigma that is Emery's parents. Their story blends seamlessly in, as they hunt down the people who took their daughter. It also gives the reader a fabulous look at the guilt, the raw humanity, that is inside Emery's father. I think their story added a nice layer right on top of everything else. The POV changes multiple times in the story, to allow the reader to see through many eyes. Not to worry though. The changes are seamless and I thought that every character had a unique enough voice to make them easy to distinguish from one another.

Pieces of the puzzle that make up Arson and Emery's story are slowly revealed, and there is just enough reference to the last book to keep a reader quickly refreshed and ready to dive back in. There is so much action in Ashes, but it is evenly paced so that you always get just enough to keep you reading until the next piece of the puzzle falls into place. Is Arson something more than he once thought? Does he have the power to be more than just a freak who makes fire? What is it about his past that he just can't seem to remember? You'll find out my friends. You'll find out.

In a cruel twist, which I'm sure was entirely intentional, once again the story is open just enough at the end to allow Arson's story to continue on. In all honesty, I can't wait. Ashes is the perfect blend of all of my favorite things. Darkness, power, morality, love, and so much more. Trust me, if you haven't picked up this series yet and you have been debating it, do it now. Estevan Vega weaves a story that is well worth your time.(less)

This was a really intense and intriguing second book in this series. At times, I was kind of confused about what was real and what was only happening inside Arson's head - but eventually you get the hang of telling what's going on and the story takes over. The plot was amazing in its depth and detail. I loved learning more about Arson's past, his origins, and the evil plans that the scientists were creating. I felt it added an extra layer to the story and made it more dimensional. Arson is a weird, but fantastic, main character. He's certainly not your normal lead, but he shows a lot of character growth in the story - which I really liked. I found myself rooting for him to overcome the obstacles that had always blocked his way and I definitely liked that he was finally willing to accept himself for what he truly was and what he could be. The plot was intricate and fast-paced - it definitely had me turning pages to see what would happen next. The writing was confusing in parts, like I mentioned earlier, but had a great style and flowed effortlessly throughout the book. Overall, this was a wonderful sequel to the first book and I am really intrigued to see where the third and final book will take us. I'm hoping all the questions will be answered and we'll see a fantastic ending to a truly unique trilogy.

As sorta-predictable and skip-tempting as I found the first book, this sequel simply rocked. This one definitvely gave more answers then it asked questions, which I am very thankful for, but the show's not over yet. There's still more to come, and I'm looking forward to it!

Ashes is exactly the kind of book I would have read in my teens. This may shock some of you, but as a teen I read primarily horror novels. From Anne Rice to Richard Matheson to HP Lovecraft and more, there was hardly a horror book I left alone. As a teen there was no such thing as young adult fiction and I basically read whatever my Dad had & recommended. It worked out great because we shared quite a few of the same interests in books and music. Enter today’s standards and I’m sure the books I read back then wouldn’t make the YA cut. Which brings me to the dilemma with Ashes, is it YA or adult fiction? In my personal opinion I’d easily recommend it to a mature teen who loves a good scary paranormal read, but in that same vein I’d also hand it to an adult horror reader as well. I think that applies to quite a bit of YA fiction, but in the case of horror YA maybe even more so. I’d hate for a reader to turn Ashes down because they thought it was not in the right “category”.

As for the story…it was just as I remembered with Arson, full of action and great characters. This being the second book in the series I was personally looking forward to getting to know both Emery and Arson better and seeing where their relationship went after their abduction at the end of the first book. That certainly happened, but what I didn’t expect was the additional characters including Emery’s parents, Lamount, Adam, Saul Hoven and many more. The addition was great in terms of plot twists and the future of the series, but at times I did wish there were only one or two narrators instead of four or five. Besides that, the story was amazing and I loved the idea of placing much of the story in an asylum. Very creepy indeed.

Ashes, the second novel in the Arson series by Estevan Vega, is packed full of action, plot twists and of course a creepy setting. Vega is a fantastic new voice in the world of horror fiction and one that readers will thoroughly enjoy. With the fate of the world at stake I’m eager to see where Adam will lead Arson, if either is truly hoping to save the world and of course who will get the girl in the end. This is a series to watch for and I’m excited to continue reading it as soon as the next book is released!

It’s funny how all these characters are connected in some form or another. It blows my mind. But it makes for an amazing story. I really enjoyed the first book, ARSON but I absolutely loved ASHES.

This book starts off with a bang, though, not literally. The first chapter has you cringing all the way through it. It’s a great way to grab the reader’s attention. It gives you a feel for what’s to come throughout the whole book.

And when I thought that there was no way to improve on such an amazing story, Vega has decided to go and prove me wrong in Ashes. It's darker, grittier and so much more than what I expected it to be. Plus, it had just enough detail and reference to Arson that it was a slice of cake to delve right back into Arson's world.

One of the first things that I noticed in this book is that we get to know Arson a lot better, both past and present. He's always been a character of interest, but that's taken to a whole knew level in this book. Not only do you get to know him more, but you empathize with him so much that you feel everything that he feels and experience everything that he goes through right with him.

Of course, Emery is also back and you witness what she goes through as well. Both she and Arson go through a lot, not only physically but mentally as well - all while not knowing what has happened to each other. We're also introduced to a new character, Adam, who promises to get Emery out of the facility.

The POV changes a lot through the story. However, where most stories would get confusing and difficult to follow, Estevan writes the perspective changes so well that switching is as easy as counting 1-2-3. It doesn't take you out of the story at all. On the contrary, it adds more layers to the story so we can see how everyone is effected by Arson and Emery's disappearance from their own lives and their entrance into Salvation Asylum. As we advance in the story, we not only learn more about the characters but also about the true purpose of the Asylum. The ending will both leave you breathless and longing for even more of Arson's world.

Like his other stories, Vega's description and detail in this book are so vivid that you feel as though you've dived right into the dark world that he has created. Every page is chock full of amazing storytelling that keeps you flipping from beginning to end - hanging on to the very end of your seat the entire time. (less)

This book was packed with action and of course great characters! I mean I don't understand how the story can get any better! I was so anxious to see how Emery's and Arson's relationship flourished after being kidnapped. The new characters were also a great added bonus! They all had there ticks and tocks.This trilogy is one that is going to be one that I will definitely recommend everyone reads. Not only is this book packed with action but it is also a very emotional and heart grabbing read.

I love mint chocolate chip ice cream. Like, really love it. Watching movies and going to rock shows are 2 of my favorite pastimes, and I am addicted to telling stories.

It all started because a 5th grade teacher decided to become a meddler in my life. That’s right, one of my least favorite authority figures at the time assigned us to write these 1 page short stories for class. We had the freedom to create whatever we wanted (within reason), but the assignments were do every day, and upon completing the school year, the plan was that we’d all bind them to compile a book. Well, at the time I hating reading, hated writing, and wanted to be a comic book artist. I figured I’d one day work for Marvel or Disney or something. And I was pretty good at sketching too. But I always found it hard to create my own characters, and I often just settled for copying somebody else’s masterpiece.

Something was missing.

Well, then a 2nd meddler enters the picture. My pops. He starts helping me with the stories. And by helping me, I really just mean I was there more as a consultant and a constant nuisance, ensuring proper grammar was employed. He was the real writer, in my mind. I just wished I could be him. My teacher started grading the stories, and I was floored to see A+ after A+. And she liked my stories enough…ahem, our stories enough, to read them in front of the class. The response was terrific. My classmates actually gave a crap. They wanted to know what happened next. So I turned 1 story into about 12 or so, and made a little book out of it. Looking back, it’s probably terrible. But the point is…I was hooked on the game.

My father and I began discussing book concepts until finally, in 6th grade, I set out to write a “real” book, all by myself. 3 years later, Servant of the Realm was born. It was so under the radar it wasn’t even funny, but I was just stoked to have my book searchable on the internet. It’s a pretty cool feeling when you’re 15. 3 years later, I released The Sacred Sin, a much darker story about a detective on the hunt for a serial killer who can steal souls. (THE FORSAKEN is the revamped version. I literally rewrote every page, and added about 100 more pages to the story. So if you haven’t picked that baby up, you might wanna.) 3 years after that–I know, 3 is the magical number, it seems–ARSON was unleashed. This story is closest to my heart because it came from a very unique place and time in my life. It’s like I grew up while writing it.

Flash forward to now. I’ve got 5 novels and several short stories out. I’ve been interviewed on TV, radio, and the internet. I’ve done several blog tours, have my own Youtube channel, twitter page, FB page, so quite frankly, there’s really no reason for you not to stalk me. I’m still that sort of college kid looking for his path while already on a path. I love to write. I love to ask the big questions, to create raw, flawed characters who do incredible things. And I’m reminded every day why I do what I do, why I write, why I tell stories…because of you. Because of something greater than myself. Because if I didn’t, I’d probably go insane.
