Madison Westin proves to be an intriguing character in a cove filled with interesting characters, most of whom are tenants at the motel. Personalities help make the story, although the story could have started a bit quicker. Introducing the murder sooner would have increased the pace.

The first meeting between Zach and Madison strains the reader’s believability. There wasn’t enough development between the two characters as well as between Madison and her mother.

Strange, crazy and very dubious characters inhabit this sleepy beach town in Florida. There's a locker picker, a security expert, a greedy lawyer, a controlling architect, a drunk, a woman whose pet is a stuffed cat, an over protective mother and brother. What a great read! A Funny and engaging Chick Lit/Mystery that you won't want to put down.

Deborah Brown has created the most fun book I have read in a long time. I found myself actually laughing at the clever humour and crazy circumstances she has written; rather skilfully I may add. It’s hard to believe this is Deborah’s debut novel, she writes like a pro.

Deborah Brown has created the most fun book I have read in a long time. I found myself actually laughing at the clever humour and crazy circumstances she has written; rather skilfully I may add. It’s hard to believe this is Deborah’s debut novel, she writes like a pro.

Madison Westin has just arrived in Tarpin Cove, a down on its rundown little town in the Florida Keys, after inheriting her Aunt Elizabeth’s home and properties, and unfortunately her shyster lawyer Tucker Davis. When her whiskey swilling, cigar smoking, mother and her fisherman brother Brad, meet with Davis after a circus of a funeral, the lawyer reads Elizabeth’s will arrogantly emphasizing his power of attorney.

As she moves into her late aunt’s house Madison is surprised to see a tall, dark and good looking man reclining by her pool, complete with a gunshot wound in his shoulder. Finding herself instantly attracted to Zach Lazzaro, private investigator, she finds herself swapping IOUs with Zach, an arrangement started by Aunt Elizabeth, and in need of the security services of he and his ragtag crew; each of whom sport their own skills in the private security business.

Inheriting not only her aunt’s home but also her beach front property, Tarpin Cove Cottages Madison heads over to inspect the hotel and meet the acting manager, Will Todd. Madison finds the man arrogant, forceful and who terrifies her. She wants to take over the running of the hotel and get rid of the guy which proves to be harder than she expects. She discovers proof of embezzlement and a plot to steal the cottages from under her and she plans to stop Todd in his tracks at all costs.

After bodies begin piling up and attempts are made on her life, Zach and his team go into action. Amidst turmoil and crazy situations love blooms, crises are alleviated and firm friendships develop.

Deborah Brown, has loved reading and writing short stories, poetry and in her words, “sappy love letters” since she was a little girl. Deborah’s goal in writing ‘Crazy in Paradise’ was to create the perfect beach book and she has definitely succeeded. She has created a quirky cast of characters and a storyline that is funny, witty and sometimes a little sad. This is a book that should be on everyone’s summer reading list and gifted to friends. It is a great read you won’t be able to put down.

My Review

This book initially read like a Marian Keynes in the feel of it and the build up of the relationships, sometimes you love the characters sometimes you hate them. For the most part I hated and disliked quite a few of them, the lawyer who is the executer of her aunts estate especially. Madison the main character I went through phases of liking to wanting to slap, her character went from being interesting and fun (almost like talking to one of your friends) to being so stupid and a pushover.

The story always has something going on and that is really what held my interest, I was dying for her to get some spirit and challenge the horrid motel manager and lawyer. Zach, Fab, Ace and Spoon I think are great characters and a book about them and their adventures I would love to read about, Madison not so much.

Another thing that annoyed me was when something happened for example when Madison overheard a pretty big threat instead of telling someone or the police she stayed quiet and then it wasn't brought up in the book until several chapters later and this happened once or twice. Another annoying aspect of her character was how she dealt with (or rather didn't) with the "date" her mother set her up with. That side of her character compared to the side that comes to Zachs rescue on more than one occassion was a total contrast and annoyed me so much that if the action hadn't been so good I might have had to knock the book a star off. I have read somewhere that some authors like making hateable characters as they stay longer with the reader therefore so does the story, if that was the intention then it certainly worked.

Definately mixed feelings over this one and as I said the action was pretty good but some of the characters grated that it breaks even and gets a 3/5, and yes I would read this author again but maybe not so quick to take up with Madison again.

Quirky is the best word I can use to describe Crazy in Paradise by Deborah Brown. There's a lot packed into this little book. What stood out to me the most is the names for some of the characters. Spoon, Slice, Axe, Topaz, and Buckshot to name a few.

The normal one of the bunch is recently divorced Madison Westin. She has just inherited property from her deceased Aunt Elizabeth. She sees it as an opportunity to start a new life. She can live in her aunt's home and run her rental property. It sounds great, but Aunt Elizabeth's attorney, Tucker Davis, has other plans. Plans that don't include Madison. But Madison is determined to fight for her rights.

One moment Madison is assertive with the local drunk Joseph, but folds quickly in certain moments of conflict. Tucker is the executor of Aunt Elizabeth's estate and never lets Madison forget it. All the while I'm thinking stand up for yourself. Don't let someone walk over you. Madison says she will hire her own attorney to protect her interests, but it takes a lot to get to that point.

Despite the legal distractions, Madison manages to form a romantic relationship with the mysterious and good-looking Zach Lazarro. The attraction is instant. If you've read my last couple of reviews, you'll know I'm dubious of instant attraction. Their first meeting was extremely unconventional and a bit of a stretch. Madison discovers Zach asleep and bleeding from a gunshot wound in her home. Yes she is taken aback by this, but Madison is also thinking of how cute Zach is. How about screaming? Hmmmmmmmm? Zach reassures Madison he's not a bad guy and even convinces her to call the local doctor instead of an ambulance or the police. I just had a hard time finding this scenario believable. A couple of chapters later and they're already having sex. Zach insists they're in a relationship despite Madison's protests. She doubts their relationship. Is it real or was it born out of extreme circumstances?

The storyline is fact-paced and has a lot of action. But some of it requires a stretch of the imagination. In Madison's quest to get control of Aunt Elizabeth's property, she overhears a plot to threaten her safety. She is shaken by it, but doesn't immediately inform the police, Zach or her family. Instead, she keeps it to herself. It isn't even brought up again until much later in the book. You know someone plans to intimidate and possibly harm you, why wouldn't you go to the police? Situations like that can't be resolved on your own.

The last couple of chapters made up for my issues with the plot. I can't give it away, but it kept me interested. From page to page you're wondering what will happen. Will it end badly or will everything work out?

Crazy in Paradise was a book full of strange, crazy characters, each collecting their own set of “I owe you’s.” From the first page of the book to the last, the action was non-stop. One of the more enjoyable reads I've had recently, this book contained a little bit of everything. Within the first few chapters I was treated to several quirky characters and some wonderfully irreverent humor as I followed our heroine, Madison Westin, on her journey through a bit of personal upheaval. The book was so-so. I totally wasn't expecting all the crazy kidnapping, murder and blackmail for sure but that's what I get for not reading synopsis. I finished the book not so much because I wanted to find out what happened but because I have to finish anything I've started. This is a really good read if you like novels with quirky characters that are a bit extreme. It’s very fast paced—something is constantly happening—and the characters are all quite funny; I definitely snorted a few different times due to the outlandish circumstances surrounding the characters, especially Madison. I mean, if I could meet them all in real life, it’d be one heck of a party… but these also aren’t the type of people I’d surround myself, for my own safety!

Madison Elizabeth Westin, a newly divorced and a cynical character because of it, yet perhaps not so cynical as she was "realistic" in her approach to life now, was packed and ready to go visit her favorite aunt and second mother to her, Elizabeth.
Elizabeth lived in Tarpon Cove, Florida, in the Keys, running a bunch of cottages/motel, and living in the main house on the property. Madison is ready to leave when she finds out Aunt Elizabeth has passed away. She was so shocked.
Somehow her Aunt's attorney had been left directions to coordinate the funeral, without any say-so of the family whatsoever, and the entire funeral turns out to be a fiasco which infuriates Madison.
I have to say the author has written this event to be absolutely hilarious in places you would least expect it. First, at the funeral home, where the Funeral Director has her Aunt sitting straight up in her casket and people feel like she is staring at them and is a little offended. The attorney schedule a couple of local drunks who knew her to get up to speak about her. One has to be carried away, the other escorted out.
Only in the keys would people be attending a funeral be sitting around in bathing suit cover-ups, tropical shirts, cut-off blue jeans shorts and more. Madison was the only person dressed in black. She was very angry about this entire funeral that her Aunt's attorney set up. This did not make sense to her as to why the family would not be allowed to take part in the planning of this funeral.
For anyone who has ever traveled to the Florida Keys, or spent any time there at all, this can be very typical of the way many people dress and act, which is what was so hilarious about this for me. It was so laid back and true-to-life I was in hysterics! I remember some of the characters I met on the beach, and couldn't help but to relate them to some of these characters in this book! ONLY in the Keys! Now I was left wondering WHAT could happen next?
First she finds a little romance! Okay, one HOT guy!
Madison later finds out she has inherited this property her aunt owned. Now she has to fight with this attorney, and the Hotel Management guy, who does nothing but give her grief. If anyone needs to be cynical and realistic now, it's Madison. All of these new problems now, which just does not make sense to her, nor the Reader, ALL being caused between these two men. The attorney blames is on Probate Court, the Maintenance Man states her Aunt appointed him to do this and that. None of this makes sense to Madison.
With this comes a lot of problems, problems you would never think of! From her meddling mother setting her up on dates she never would have gone on on her own, to the very colorful tenants and the visitors of Tarpon Cove, to a dead body.
Out of the blue, Madison gets herself involved in a Murder/Mystery which puts her and other people's lives in danger.
Only in Tarpon Cove!
I happened to greatly enjoy this story. I thought it was a lot of fun to read, and the interjected humor was a riot. I really liked the main character, Madison's, approach to life. Cynical at times, yet not so cynical but more of being realistic towards life. She had some tough things thrown at her with very little knowledge or understanding as to what was going on. She was like a fish out of water at times.
This was a great story to lose yourself in. I enjoyed every part of it!
Now, throw all your cares away and read this book!
I HIGHLY suggest this book for a beach read, or a great Winter Vacation in Tarpon Cove right now! Escape the cold 'now' and go on vacation down to the warmth of the Florida Keys! Take this trip! Turn up the heat in your house, throw on your bathing suit, grab your flip-flops and your cover-up, and put on some tropical music! Don't forget the beach towel and the sunscreen! You'll have transported yourself directly to the Florida Keys, in the thick of it! Say "Hi!" to Madison for me!

When I read the blurb for this book I was intrigued by the promise of a tough heroine and plenty of action so although it took me a while to get to it I was excited about reading this novel. The first paragraph was good and so I settled in to read.

The first paragraph was good and so I settled in to read.
There are things that worked for me: the villains are chilling and infuriatingly in control of the situation, the good guys aren't averse to breaking and entering, and the guys in between apparently don't know that playing both sides isn't the smartest thing to do. Madison herself is a woman with a past and is ready to reclaim her life, ready to take some risks and there are plenty of risks to take. Action scenes flowed very well and I was glad to see that things didn't always end well for the good guys and Madison didn't always escape unscathed. Another positive is that things did move along rather quickly and this wasn't a laborious read.
There are also things that didn't work for me: the dialogue was often robotic with no real segway between subjects and there were few details that helped create a living-breathing atmosphere for the scenes that would pull me in. The insta-lust between Madison and Zach was way too instant and way too intense, and the fact that she welcomed him into her life as quickly as she did and to the extent that she did. Half the time I wished she would remember that she's only just met the guy and tell him to quit groping her in public. Another thing that didn't work for me was how the truth about the main villain was revealed, I felt it was too contrived.
I usually don't complain about blurbs because their whole job is to hook the reader and they rarely represent what the book is about with any degree of accuracy. I will complain here though: the blurb makes Madison out to be a go-getter who is on first-name basis with guns and who's going to "wrestle" her inheritance from the bad guys, but when I read the book I got an impression that she's a young woman who is really more of a scaredy-cat whith a swim in her pool at the top of her to-do list than a go-getter, although she tries darn hard to break out of the pattern and therefore makes some audacious choices and actually sees some action.
All in all this isn't a bad read but while I think that Ms. Brown's writing has potential this book wouldn't be my first choice to recommend to a friend in search of a thrilling mystery. (less)

An enjoyable light read. More romance than I usually go for, but it is well written and better edited than many I've picked up free for my kindle app. It isn't quite a mystery in the usual sense, but it has plenty of mysterious elements and tension to balance out the romance. I would enjoy more from this author and with this main character. I liked her determination to prove herself--to herself. It's a feeling I both recognize and respect.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, so much that when I finished it I immediately bought the next one in the series. Besides being extremely well written, it has a everything I love in a book: A protagonist who's easy to relate to, romance, a quirky but believable supporting cast of characters, a fast-paced plot with action that never stops, and lots of laughs. I can't wait for number three!

Had this in my summer arsenal of downloads. Actually my husband found this one for me and I enjoyed that it was set in the Florida Keys. Plot developed quickly and kept me reading. Some of it was too predictable and cliche especially with the private eye romance...but overall a fun read.

I feel guilty for giving this book three stars. It was a mindless romantic suspense book that I guess you need every now and then. It keep my attention so that's why I gave it the rating I did. It wasn't bad for a free book!

I had a hard time getting into this book. After several attempts I ended up staying up and reading it rather quickly. I can't believe what interesting experiences one character can have. Glad I was persistent and read it!

what can I say? I took a chance on a book and it turned out to be a good one. LOVE THE BOOK!! The characters are fleshed out and seem like they can real. They were fun to read and the dialouge was stellar. Can't wait to read the sequel.
