This book came to my attention from a brief description that appeared in Ohio Magazine due to the fact that it was written by a Cleveland author.

It’s a somewhat frightening view of what awaits us in the afterlife. James Broadhurst is killed in a car accident, but instead of everyone’s idea of heaven, he’s stuck in a small, nondescript apartment with an evasive and uncommunicative roommate and a suitcase full of his favorite things on earth: his favorite shirt, tie, pants, mug, book, More...

In this provocative, off-kilter image of the afterlife, the only real differences from "real" life are banal and fairly useless -- the narrator can walk for as long as he wants without getting tired, and lots of people look like Abraham Lincoln. Beyond that, it's all pretty familiar: lousy apartments, dull jobs, and painful loneliness in an unnamed crumbling city (not necessarily Cleveland, but close to the way I imagine that town -- the author's home -- in some regards). I didn't get anything out of this book. I feel like this story has been done before, both in the movies and in literature. I found this particular version of it [this type of story] to be strained. I would expect something with this particular storyline to be thought provoking, yet it just didn't make it. Your time would be better spent watching the movie Defending Your Life or even The Bothersome Man (film from Norway).

I am not a religious person, but for whatever reason I have a fascination with views of heaven. Cloud 8 is more about purgatory if I recall correctly, but hey, it's still in the heaven genre. Cloud 8 embodies everything that I love about indie publications: it's inventive, irreverent, funny and serious, and when it's over I want more.

Fantastic! Intriguing! Smart!
Very witty from beginning to end. I am so happy I read this book. My book shelves would be incomplete with without it.

Loving it. Funny and moving, ironic and warm. What is the afterlife? Life?
