This is a WONDERFUL book! It tells the history of Relief Society--God's organization for women in His Church, where they learn and serve as His disciples to increase faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes, and seek out and give relief to those in need. I am so grateful for this organization and its mission and vision to serve and bless and love being a part of it. I know this is God's plan for His daughters. I feel humbled, empowered, loved, trusted, responsible and grat...more

This is a wonderful book about the purpose and destiny of women. We are pretty amazing. We are lovely, feminine, powerful, faithful, motherly, and full of love and charity.

If you are interested in a little more detail of our great history, take a look at my blog about the history of the Relief Society www.ldswomenofgod.com/blog

I challenged myself this year (2013) to read two books a month...one for pleasure and one for instruction. In January, I chose Wuthering Heights because of our cold and rainy weather...and there is no book I like cuddling up better with on a grey day than Emily Bronte's forceful novel.

For my book of instruction...I humbled myself to finally read this: Daughters in My Kingdom. I say "humbled" because as rule, I typically LOATHE to read books about church. They hold no interest for me...I want to...more

I really appreciate that the Church published this book. I am always curious about history, and it was very interesting to see how the Relief Society has grown and changed through the decades. I think we are stronger in planning our future when we are aware of our past.

I have to admit that the book kind of made me feel sad sometimes, because I sometimes feel that Relief Society does not play as big a part in the lives of Latter-day Saint women today as it did then. I wish we had more activities,...more

This book was a missed opportunity. When the anecdotes are actual excerpts from the women's own diaries, we find powerful and intelligent voices, but the historical narrative they are embedded within is very problematic for the way it flattens out controversial points, notably the Priesthood issues. The Joseph Smith Translation notes that the Priesthood is an Order "without father or mother", and this book does, in fact, have the quotes from Joseph Smith in which he desires women to be ordained...more

This book reminded me that when you put God first, you'll have enough time to do all that is required of you. "By seeking to perform every duty you will find that your capacity will increase, and you will be astonished at what you can accomplish." It truly is a privilege to be a part of this extraordinary group of women that is from every part of the world. In 1842 "Women had to petition to belong, and they were accepted based on their goodness and virtue."

Some other favorite quotes, " It is be...more

What a wonderful gift! Thank you to the General Relief Society Board of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, for this book. I loved so much of it. I loved the physical feel and look of the book. The pages are so pretty. The art work in it was just as inspiring as the written word. I have many favorite quotes, but here are just a few:

Okay, so as I was thumbing through my beautiful book there are WAY too many quotes that I love to narrow it down. My absolute most favorite piece of art...more

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized April 6, 1830. The Relief Society was organized in a divinely inspired and organized manner March 17, 1842. "The Relief Society was established by the spirit of inspiration, and has been guided by that spirit [ever since], and has instilled into the hearts of countless of our good sisters those desires for righteousness which have been pleasing to the Lord." (Joseph Fielding Smith) In 1913 "Charity never faileth" became the official R...more

"Verily I say unto you, all those who receive my gospel are sons and daughters in my kingdom." Doctrine and Covenants 25:1

When I first started reading this I expected it to be very dry and to tell me the things that I already know about church history. I wasn't really expecting to get anything from it but it was a free book so I decided to read it. What an amazing book this is. I'm getting teary eyed just thinking about it again.

It is about the history of Relief Society. For those of you who are...more

For the record..if I could give this book a 4.75 I would for I loved it. I was so inspired by the quotes, the stories, and in general the legacy that Relief Society has made for it's self. This book has opened my eyes as to how blessed I have been through out my adult life to be taught by the good ladies I have been blessed to associate with, service opportunities afforded me, and words of wisdom I have been taught. As I think about the different avenues for learning and growth women can choose...more

This is a must read for every Husband and father in the LDS Church! I know that may sound hard, especially since this book was written and designed for the women of the Church, but in reading it I have found myself left with a sense of awe and extremely grateful for a loving Father in Heaven and His plan for our families.
I learned some new things about what the Relief Society has done through the years and it made me proud.
This book covers the inherent strengths and talents all women have.

This book was distributed to women in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It can be downloaded for free here: http://lds.org/relief-society/daughte... or purchased for $3 through the LDS distribution center. It's a full-color, paperback book. I found it to be a quick read, I read it one day (a day when both of my children miraculously took long naps at the same time).

It is full of stories of LDS women throughout the history of the church and quotes about LDS women given by prophets...more

I was VERY excited for this book to come out and I was plenty satisfied with the excellent publishing effort of the book. Reminding myself that this was not intended for academic study, I was pleased with the quality of research and writing within it. It is filled with spiritual and uplifting stories and is a wonderful and broad look at Relief Society through its history.

My problem was with the chapter on the priesthood. I am not a woman with a hang up about men having the priesthood. However, t...more

An inspiring (and inspired) book written specifically for Latter-day Saint (Mormon) women, Daughters in My Kingdom describes the "history and work" of the Relief Society. Organized by themes (for example, charity, visiting teaching, and "Guardians of the Hearth") this book reads rather chronologically, beginning from New Testament origins and moving to the 21st century.

Reading this book really made me feel like I am privileged to be part of this society for women. I loved the quotes from Relief...more

I am very happy to see a book like this, about women- published by the church. It is groundbreaking! I don't recall any other manuals that contain much of anything regarding the women of the church, other than a few pioneer stories. It is nice to have our contributions documented and recognized- that women's history is finally being told. It is also unique in that it acknowledges the researchers and author, Susan Tanner, who did a very commendable job. I like the touching story of her mother-in-...more

I was very excited to get this book and start reading it, because I think women in the LDS church desperately need resources like this book where they can look to examples of strong, inspiring women. I loved the chapters about the beginning of Relief Society and the chapter on Visiting Teaching, however I was disappointed with the later chapters on Women and the Priesthood and Women in the Home. In the Priesthood chapter, the authors try to make the case that Relief Society is equal to the Pries...more

A wonderful reference of the history of the Relief Society. I was inspired as I read what past general Relief Society presidents have focused on during their terms as president, and I especially loved learning about Zina D.H. Young who was president of the Deseret Silk Association. It says the group "raised silkworms" and she "abhorred the worms and even suffered nightmares about them, but she obediently hatched and raised them... and taught others to do the same" (pg 52). So interesting!

I read this because I was asked to be the speaker at our ward's Relief Society "birthday party" next week and the book was basically my topic. What a powerful book. What a powerful organization of women. The women of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints are truly remarkable. Their faith and dedication to the Savior's work is inspiring. There is an inspired purpose behind the organization of the Relief Society. One of the impressions I had from this book is there is no reason for a wom...more

When the publication of this volume was announced at the General Relief Society Meeting in September I was anxious to read it, hoping to learn lots of new things about this organization that I have always loved. I have to admit I was somewhat disappointed - not so much in the quality of the book, but in the obvious intent of it. I was hoping for something more academic, but I realize now that what the church has produced has a higher purpose than educating me about the detailed history of Relief...more

A MUST read for every LDS woman who loves, or is learning to love, Relief Society. What a marvelous heritage the Relief Society has, and what good service has been done by such inspired women! On a personal note, I was very touched to read a story about Geraldine Bangerter on page 111 about her experience as a mission president's wife in Brazil, and how her faith overcame all the barriers she faced in not being familiar with the language, the people or the culture. The only words she had memoriz...more

It is kind of difficult to explain my opinion of this book. I didn't anxiously anticipate the day of it's arrival and I was concerned to have another "to do/read" to add to my list. It is difficult some days to even read my scriptures. Plus I have felt like I have heard a lot of "this book is great" kind of stuff, but not so much about why or how it is great. Basically, I kind of had a bad attitude.

But, with all the focus placed on this book right now, I decided the best thing for me to do would...more

“I will speak to you … of the great legacy those who went before you in the Relief Society have passed on to you. The part … which seems to me most important and persistent is that charity is at the heart of the society and is to come into the heart, to be part of the very nature, of every member. Charity meant to them far more than a feeling of benevolence. Charity is born of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and is an effect of His Atonement working in the hearts of the members. …

I keep going back and forth between a 3 and 4 star rating. So maybe a 3.5 rating? 3.8?

* Some of the history of the Relief Society was interesting to read about (I learned some new things)

* I liked looking at the artwork and photographs in the book. (I think without the pictures this book would not seem as colorful and fun)

* I liked some parts of the book better than others.

* The book felt redundant at times

* The quotes throughout the book were not in chronological order but jump around accordin...more

I think having this book written by just one person is a definite bonus. A lot more continuity and flow. I liked it and thought it was very well done.

It took me a few chapters to start "feeling" this book, but by the end I was quite weepy reading it. What an amazing organization Relief Society is! I gained such a sense of pride in being a part of it and so much respect for all the women who have made it great. I had no idea the Relief Society sent women back east to medical school so they could come back to SLC and start a nursing school and a hospital. They were active in international and national women's organizations. They were at the for...more

I first started out reading it skeptical, but after reading the first 3 chapters, I knew it was something I needed to mark. I went back and marked all the quotes throughout the book. I was touched by the progress that Relief Society has had since it was first instituted in the 1800's. I have a testimony of the importance of this Society, the roll of women, and the truths found in this book. I enjoyed reading the history, testimonies and quotes from church leaders and women throughout the world....more

This was a very inspiring book. I read the book to give a 10-minute presentation at our Ward's Relief Society birthday dinner. The overwhelming theme, which I based my presentation on, is that as daughters of God, we can become women of faith and we can do hard things!! The women quoted and discussed in the book have overcome overwhelming personal challenges with faith and trust in our Heavenly Father. And they have selflessly reached out to aid those around them who are suffering, thus lifting...more

What a rock for women in a world where so many are confused about what is most important. What is most important has little to do with us (appearance or accomplishments) and much more to do with how we value and serve those closest to us. Charity Never Faileth! I was continually inspired by the examples and quotes of women who quietly and faithfully fulfilled their divine roles and truly made a difference.

I was shocked at a conversation I heard in a popular TV show recently. A couple was breaki...more

Such an inspiration. Two of my favorite quotes from it:

I learned a lot of interesting things about the history of the RS and a lot of inspiring stories about sisters and presidents of the RS. It helped to understand some of the purposes/history behind visiting teaching and made me curious to know if the RS still teaches literacy courses to women/children. I didn't know that visiting teachers used to collect donations, that the RS was dissolved as the saints traveled west, and that for a time the RS was heavily involved in government welfare programs...more
