The stories in Conjugations of the Verb To Be each inhabit a piece of Montana that the author makes uniquely her own, whether she is writing about travels within or out of the state, building the three-generation history of a family around the evolution of hay-stacking, or rearing Arabian horses. In one story, a formidable high school physics teacher, makes an exhausting j

Cameling
A set of beautifully written short stories set in a fictional town of Buckle. Some of the stories follow generations of 2 families who find themselves linked despite attempts to break the chains that bind them. Different stories, each focusing on an individual's thoughts, fears, hopes and dreams. Although the stories stand on their own, the author manages to weave threads in them that tie them to other stories within the book, even if the stories are separated by other stories in between. The re...more

Quiet stories with generally solid writing and some beautiful descriptions, but few of the stories moved me. "Off the Road; or, The Perfect Curve Unfound" was probably my favorite with "Twin Bridges, Montana" and "The Skater" coming in next. I would have enjoyed most had I come across them as individual stories, but as a collection they became a little repetitive, and while a few joined together, connecting one character to another, it was not a collection that was designed to produce a unified...more

This is a collection of short stories that explores the themes of living, loving and dying—hence the catchy title. Chamberlain's writing is beautiful, making even the mundane sound inspiring. I felt like every sentence held meaning, and I sometimes re-read certain passages which begged to be scrutinized and appreciated. This doesn't mean that I cared or liked every character or situation in the stories but they certainly made me reflect.

All the stories take place in Buckle, Montana, a setting th...more

This is a wondrous collection of short stories, all but one about women, rural women for the most part, who are living life as best they can, with their quiet hopes and their everyday realities that make dreams difficult. They are all interconnected, occasionally you'll see a character walk through, someone's daughter, someone's wife, that you've seen before. Perhaps a week ago, or perhaps a generation or two ago. There is a lot of living, loving, anger, regret, birth, death and just general lif...more

A collection of short stories set in the Crazy Mountains of Montana in the town of Buckle. Chamberlain writes relatively simple stories that evoke the rugged landscape and the men and women who work with the land and the animals that inhabit it. Stacking is a brilliant story that tells the history of hay baling while revealing three generations of heartbreak between two families. Heartbreak seems to be a common condition in Chamberlain's world. In The Tracks of Animals a woman is seemingly deser...more

In her debut collection of short stories, Conjugations of the Verb To Be, Glen Chamberlain stakes out her own distinct, well-imagined parcel of Montana land. Set in the fictional town of Buckle—“an informal little dot on the map”—these stories are populated with salt-of-the-earth ranchers, schoolteachers, nurses, lovers and dreamers.

The book begins and ends with a Mobius strip, a twisted slip of paper stapled together at the ends so that it forms an infinity loop. It hangs from the ceiling in Mi...more

A set of short stories set in a small town in Montana. Recurring characters and recurring themes. An exploration of the past, present and future.

These short stories were moving. I never wanted the story I was on to end, but at the same time I did because I wanted to see what was coming next.
Marcia
Delightful short stories.

It's been a while since I have read a short story collection. Enjoyed some in this book, but was bored by others. I kept hoping the characters I really liked might show up in another story.
Becky Wandell
A collection of short stories that don't really tie together, except the fact that they all live in the same town. Not memorable. I was really hoping it would be more placed-based.
