Leadership: Theory and Practice
Heartened by the positive response to previous editions of Leadership: Theory and Practice, this Fourth Edition is written with the same objective to bridge the gap between the often simplistic popular approaches to leadership and the more abstract theoretical approaches.

One of my Fall 2011 accomplishments! Thanks to Reid for plowing through this one with me. It was one of those books that I felt I should read, since it's a best selling text in leadership. I'm glad I did.
The first 1/3 was slow going, discussing older theories that seemed to have serious faults and limited applicability. But, it was good history and context for the leadership instructor. The next 1/3 contained discussion of transformational leadership and authentic leadership tha...more

This is a very good introduction to leadership. It is appropriate for undergraduate level course. It covers a great array of leadership topics in easy-to-understand language.
Read this as part of the Teacher Leader program at EKU. It is well written and honest about the major leadership theories. The fact that it includes the negative sides is refreshing. Good starter text but it does lack the implementation tools that some other text have. A lot of theory and case study readings make it an interesting read overall but not the best in the field at large.
Read NOV 2008
This is a good survey of leadership theories. However, one seeking to develop leadership capability would need more than this text.

this is a psych book. ok. just made me think more about some terrible "leaders" i know at work.
Not bad for a psych 358 BYU independent study course. Easy reading and interesting.
A great book that summarizes leadership theories in common everyday language.
Very typical textbook; you get out of it what you put into it, I guess. Found some really good theories that I could definitely apply to prior supervisors in what NOT to do - and got an 8-10 page paper out of it, too. Still, rather boring, and I wouldn't be picking it up for a fun read.

This does what it should--outlines various leadership theories and practices. It's pretty read-able, and the standard format means that you're getting the same info from chapter to chapter. That fact also means it gets tiring reading from beginning to end, but used as a reference it's probably better. A few gender-related concerns came up during discussion of the book, so it'll be interesting to go back and catch some more, and perhaps alert the author to them for his next edition. Buku yang cukup lengkap jika ingin mempelajari Leadership.
My "go to" leadership book!
It was a decent textbook, explaining several different approached to examining leadership, but still, it WAS a textbook.
I need this book
Very clear and concise primer on leadership. I Highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in an excellent literature review on various styles of leadership.
Northouse gives a good general idea about the various leadership theories and their development, but this topic is oftentimes so vague that I would read a chapter and come away having no further concept of that topic than I did before reading. It didn't help that my professor openly belittled the book throughout the semester. I have learned a lot more about leadership than I ever expected to, but it's not something I ever want to study again.
Very clearly written and easy to read overview of leadership theories. It follows the same format across the chapters which makes it easy to compare the different theories.

General overview of various leadership theories: trait, behavior, contingency, situational, transformational. She also has chapters on Women, Culture. A good overview with case studies used after each chapter to illustrate the point. To be used in my Leadership class (URBN 570)
A solid survey of leadership theories, this book is approachable and gives a good basic understanding of the most common theories.
It's a textbook, and about as interesting as such. However, good overview of the many research-based leadership theories from which the general business and academic world base their leadership practices and programs.
