Pregnant playmates
I received this book as a present from a friend. Her words were, "If you can't trust advice from a playmate, who can you trust?"
"Belly Laughs" is probably selling copies around the country because Jenny McCarthy has turned her foul mouth and crude observations on her pregnancy symptoms. The descriptions are wince-able at times, but not all together unamusing. The sheer abundance of massive body changes in pregnancy is fodder for the author to compare private pa...more

An awful, heinous book. Jenny McCarthy writes like a fourth grader. I thought at the very least it would have some comedic moments... no, no it doesn't. I feel that my IQ dropped 20 points after reading it.

Another book I wish I could give less than one star. McCarthy shows herself to be unintelligent and unenlightened as she spreads fear, panic, and gross misinformation to any pregnant woman who might be unlucky enough to read this book. I know she is trying to be funny, but to anyone capable of complex thought, she's just a dull hack. And her constant self derision, making herself out to be a "crazy pregnant woman" as she wrote about her husband's rude treatment of her, was just piti...more

This book was a very shallow book, I felt. Yes, it deals with some of the more embarrassing and less beautiful sides of pregnancy, but I also felt that it exaggerated them. I liked that Jenny was all about the comfort zone, it's important to embrace pregnancy and give in to the gear because it's COMFORTABLE though not the sexiest thing you've ever worn. I was unhappy with some of her choices and some of her attitudes about labor & delivery & breastfeeding. I do believe that if Jenny ...more

So horrible. "the naked truth about pregnancy?" Well if you don't already know that being pregnant makes you constipated, emotional, nauseous, discharge, pee frequently, and ultimately gain weight, then buy this book. I would just recommend you do so from a second hand store. That is right where my copy is going. $15 for 160 pages of agony is just poor spending. Also, don't expect any of it to be funny, (at all). Although, jenny does frequently tell you how funny she [thinks she] is. ...more

I read this book shortly after I found out I was pregnant and okay, so I admit, it may not be the best book ever written. However, it's a short, fun read and I recommend it to anyone who is currently pregnant, has been pregnant or is planning on becoming pregnant.

Heinous. I wish I could give this less than one star, because it was a waste of trees and time. I don't understand why people thought this was funny. Sure, she talks about some of the embarrassing parts of pregnancy, but her humor is immature and crude and it didn't make me feel one bit better about pregnancy. I HATED the way she and her (now ex-) husband interacted, and how she used profanity unnecessarily in failed attempts at humor. Even when she was talking about things that I went through, ...more

This book was recommended to my by a pregnant friend in March of last year. She sad to read it "in honor of all of your friends who are pregnant now... and to prepare for the day you share that experience."
I read it in one short sitting (each chapter is 2-4 pages... come on it's written by a playmate.) Still, now that i am 4 months pregnant, i can appreciate the humor that goes along with the crazt science experiment happening inside my "bod-by-baby".

After reading some of the negative reviews of this book, I'd like to start by saying that this book is intended to be the "naked truth" about pregnancy, not a warm and fuzzy ode to the pregnant condition. Come on, any woman happily pregnant does not need a book to tell her how gloriously heartwarming the miracle of life is anyway, and in defense of McCarthy, she does state that she, like the reader, would likely 'do it all again.' That said, this book really fulfilled its purpose for m...more

This New York Times best seller is just that for very good reason. Belly Laughs, subtitled: The Naked Truth About Pregnancy and Childbirth - is to true to it's title.
Jenny McCarthy, former playboy playmate (which she now regrets doing after seeing her husband drool over playmates on television while sitting next to her now gargantuan frame) and co-star of the MTV show "Singled Out" from the mid-90's, truly does tell you the naked truth. Out of the many pregnancy books this...more

If you ever wondered what it would be like to be the father of a Playboy Playmate's child, wonder no more!
Friends of my wife and I gave us this book as part of their "required reading". We are expecting in late September.
I know what you're thinking. Isn't Jenny McCarthy that really crass, not-so-funny-but-thinks-she-is Playmate who's been dating Jim Caray for the past few years?
Ya, it's the same person. But the book is actually pretty good.

Someone who is looking for a very very light read about pregnancy and birth.
I didn't read this book when I was pregnant because I was too busy reading serious and educational books about pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding. When I wanted something lighter I turned to fiction. A couple of years later, I became interested in McCarthy after hearing about her personal struggle with her son's autism. I want to read her book on that subject eventually, but in the meantime I decided to pick up Belly Laughs, knowing that this book would be a very different and much more ligh...more

Any mother or potential mother
I love Jenny McCarthy so much. She is such a cool chick! Her book is an extremely easy read; I read it all in one sitting in my early pregnancy and had a lot of laughs and a lot of "oh yeah" moments and also insight on what still awaited me. (And trust me, her story about pooping on the table really helped me accept that it happens during my own delivery, not that you wanted to know, but this whole book is full of what you may or may not want to know that no one else talks about, and I...more

I decided to read this book because someone suggested it to me. Um, bad plan. I won't say that the book was terrible but I definitely wouldn't suggest it to any of my intelligent, well-read friends who are planning to become or already are pregnant. The truth is that while I appreciate that J.M. was talking honestly about pregnancy, I felt like I was reading a book written by a teenager. Exclamation points, silly and often slightly gross jokes, a reading level that felt like about a 4.5 and a co...more

Women swollen with Love - AKA preggers
I like Jenny McCarthy. I read this after I watched a bio on her on cable. This book is pretty candid and funny. I have a hard time reading bio's in general - they seem to have pretty poor writing most of the time unless they are about John Adams or someone of great Historical significance and then *yawn* they generally put me out. I can see why the pregnant ladies would be drawn to the book.

ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!! I read this book in one sitting. I was never really a Jenny McCarthy fan, but I absolutely loved this book. She tells it like it is and isn't afraid to write the truth. With all the anxiety that can come along with pregnancy, (and Lord knows I have anxiety about everything!) this book is a light-hearted look at the amazing journey of pregnancy. It actually eases some of the anxieties that go along with pregnancy and make you realize that you aren't going crazy.

This is a really quick read, which is just perfect for my pregnancy attention span. It's nice to read a pregnancy book that is just honest, funny stories about things that actually happen and skips all the unreasonable advice that just makes you feel guilty. The best part are the lines that are laugh out loud funny that I keep repeating.

I LOVED this book. It's written like she talks and I love it when you can read something and hear the author's every word and intonation in your head as you turn the page. I am knocked up and have been blasting though a ton of prego books. This is my top pregnancy narrative by far. Not too heavy on the medical factoids but she does slip in a ton of info without you really realizing it. It's a candid, fun, fast, easy read. Reading this book is like having lunch with your closest girlfriend....more
