In Their Footsteps is the first book in the Tavistock Family series by Tess Gerritsen. When Beryl Tavistock and her brother Jordan discover that the circumstances of their parents’ death in Paris twenty years previous was not a heroic death in the line of duty, as they had always believed, they decide investigate. They travel from Chetwynd, London, the home of their Uncle Hugh, former MI6, to Paris, where the shootings took place. Once there and asking questions, they find themselves the target...more

:-( Sadly, I was going to give this book 2 stars, which would have been the lowest rating I have ever given to a book by Tess Gerritsen, who is one of my favorite authors. Upon reflection, some quotes stood out to me (listed directly below), and I liked the little twists in the story, and I can happily give In Their Footsteps 3 stars :-)
Favorite Quotes:

This book was so awful it should really only get one star, but it made me laugh so I'm giving it two. Tess Gerritsen's books are so ridiculous -- her plots have more holes than a sieve, the inevitable "twist" is signposted with the literary equivalent of flashing neon signs, and her heroines are invariably Mary-Sues. How many descriptions of Beryl's raven tresses and heaving bosom did we need? (She would trust him with her life... but not her heart!) It helped that the characters all came from d...more
Beryl Tavistock is a 28-year old raven-haired beauty with brains and wits to boot. She and her brother Jordan were orphaned 20 years previously when their mother and father were both killed in the line of duty, working as spies for England. However, at a present-day party for spies and other high-positioned people who ran in the same circles, Beryl and Jordan learn the truth about their parents' deaths when one party guest becomes a bit too inebriated divulges the family secret: the official rul...more
i like gerritsens writing she isnt my favorite author but she is very talented. however this book sadly was not her best. on the positive side the plot line is fairly deecent and the plot twist at the end of the book os holy crap level good. but the in between is only so so. beryls resemblence to her mother is like a good ten percent of the book(while on the subject what kind of name is that?!) the romance between beryl and richard is laughable. "oh i can trust him with my life but what about my...more
I'd hate to mark this as a mystery thriller even the inside cover states that it's a "romantic suspense."
There was really nothing to this book. It was one of Gerritsen's stand alones and alone it stands. No thriller; barely anything worthwhile to mention about.
Everything was just ok. It could have been turned into one of those lifetime movies that you watch when there is ABSOLUTELY nothing else on and you have it on in the background while you're cleaning your house or doing laundry or making a...more

Gerritsen weaves a tale of Transcontinental espionage when a 20-year-old murder/suicide among spies case is reinvestigated by the victims' children. The Tavistock brother and sister find themselves the target of a hit as they try to prove their parents were murdered and neither was a cheat or dirty spy. This being one of Gerritsen's early works, it contains fewer descriptive crime scenes and more romance than her more recent books, when an ex-CIA-hunk is in charge of protecting Beryl Tavistock....more
O Tess Gerritsen usłyszałam przypadkiem kilka lat temu, gdy w malutkiej księgarni w tunelu Dworca Centralnego w Warszawie postanowiłam kupić jakąś książkę na podróż powrotną do domu.

Tess'in acemilik döneminden bir kitap sanırım. Aşkı pek beceremiyor yaaaw hiç inandırıcı gelmiyor :P Onun dışında konuya gelecek olursak...more
Beryl Tavistock and her brother Jordan are haunted by the deaths of their parents 20 years ago. When old friends of her parents let slip certain scandelous inuendoes at a Bastille Day party, where much alcohol was flowing, Beryl decided once and for all to get some answers.
Her and Jordan flew to Paris, where the deaths took place, to speak to the French police, and the person in charge of the investigation 20 years ago, Claude Daumier. They also read about the code name 'Delphi', plus classified...more

I bought this book having enjoyed The Surgeon and The Apprentice. I was deeply disappointed with this novel, it felt amateurish and as though the uthiur had taken a step backwards in her writing ability. When I checked the copyright date and saw it was 1994 and published by Harlequin I began to understand why it felt so strange. This was clearly marketed in the bookshop as a new novel and it does no long term good to the author to have old works repackaged and presented as new.

Tess Gerritsen should resume writing regular spy/mystery novels again (this one was released in the mid-1990s). I love her Rizzoli & Isles series, but her older mystery novels like this one (I'm not too much of a fan of her gory medical ones) are really intriguing! This one was jam-packed with adventure, whodunnit, and danger, mixed in with a splash of romance. I felt as if I was running along with the characters Beryl Tavistock & Richard Wolf while reading this book. Definitelt a four-s...more
Beryl Tavistock has been haunted by the scandal surrounding the death of her parents, in Paris, twenty years earlier. A chance remark at a party leads her and her brother into a world of international espionage.
The story is well-paced with a number of twists and turns – but it tends to be a bit too sentimental (soft) in places.
Not a classic but a satisfying read for anyone that enjoys spy thrillers.

This is the first of her books that I have read and I will definitely read some more as I quite enjoyed it. It was one of her earlier books and, reading other reviews her later ones are even better.
This one was about a woman & her brother going to Paris to find out what really happened to their parents, who worked for MI6, and died when they were Children.
Nice easy read.

Nice easy read.
I was a bit concerned when I read the reviews for this book as they seemed overwhelmingly negative. While I agree that this particular book is not up to Rizzoli & Isles standards,it's still a good read. The humor was quite refreshing and definitely different from Gerritsen's other books. While I will not say it even comes close to being my favorite, the book was enjoyable and not a waste of time as I feared it might be.

I love Tess Gerrisen's books and especially love her Rizzoli and Isles series. I decided I wanted to read some of her earlier works and stumbles across this on Amazon and read it on my Kindle. I liked the stories, but they just aren't as good as her more recent books.
Silly romance masquerading as a thriller. Posh totty Beryl (really?) and her brother investigate the deaths of their parents 20 years ago with the help of ex-spy-who-yearns-to-settle-down-with-the right-woman Richard. Much is made of Beryl's raven tresses, but at no point does she appear to have a job or do anything except ride a stroppy horse, but that's OK because of course she'll live happily ever after with our hero... This is obviously one of Gerritsen's early books before she started writi...more
Don't have much to say about this one, it is a Romance book and I picked up the audio version at the library and did not realize that. Gave it a listen anyway and I didn't like it at all. But kudos to me, I finished it.....
This one didn't do anything for me, really. The main character, Beryl, could not be more annoying, forever sweeping her raven hair up (there's a lot of sweeping being done in this book, but it's never floors...), looking breathtakingly beautiful in any situation, and apparently looking and being pretty much exactly like her murdered mother. Seriously, if I cared enough, I would murder her just for being so obnoxious. And then this constant attraction to Richard, trusting him with her life, but n...more

Internationally bestselling author Tess Gerritsen took an unusual route to a writing career. A graduate of Stanford University, Tess went on to medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, where she was awarded her M.D.
