You've read this next line a million times: It had me from the first page. I can assure you that it may never be more true than in this book. Further, it's more likely true not just form the first page, but from the first sentence. Then it's a roller coaster ride across an amazing plot line that crosses generations and continents. This reader was left almost breathless in the end. Speaking of the end, well, ok, I won't speak of the end other than to say "wow" as it sneaks up on you and then leav...more
My brother-in-law once told me that he could never trust my opinions about movies, as he purports that I think that "every movie is the greatest movie ever." Clearly, he exaggerates. C'mon, Rich- everybody on the planet thought "Battlefield Earth" sucked!
But I was called back to his comment as I look over the three- and four- star ratings that I've given to all of the books I've reviewed so far, which got me to thinking: what's the worst book I've read from start to finish? Sorry, darling wife:...more

This novel kicks butt from the very first page. The main character, Paul Osborne, is a great combination of intuitively smart and naive about the way a lot of stuff works in life. The writing is a near-perfect blend of description, narration and dialogue that kept me glued to it for days [I do almost all my reading in bed before I drift off to sleep, which Folsom's novel made difficult to do.] It also kept me guessing and wondering how it was going to wind up - or down, if you will. That's due i...more
I read this book years ago. The only reason that it still sticks out in my mind so clearly is that I can still recall how disappointed I was at how ordinary, if not mediocre, I found the book to be. Shocking, in light of all the hype it was getting at the time.
This book is a standard, breakneck pace action thriller. Now, in all honesty, this type of pace blew me away the first time I came across such a thing in "The Bourne Identity", but that was even more years past - so perhaps I am just not a...more

A LONG RIDE TO NOTHING
"The Day After Tomorrow" speaks the language of the thrillers and can be put in the same line of Frederick Forsyth's blockbusters "The Day of the Jackal" and "The Odessa File", however "The Day after Tomorrow" is unable to attain the outstanding quality of the mentioned Forsyth's masterpieces. It is a very long book with and intricate plot, breakneck pace and too many twist and turns (just too many, one gets tired of them) as well as a lot of action packed suspense in short...more

I don't know what all the fuss is about. I picked up this book because it had the same title as the fantastical movie...I don't know what I was thinking. I read the cover, thought it might be fun and took it home. The beginning, while interesting, did not hold my imagination - I forgot about the book when I wasn't reading it and had little desire to pick it up to see where it would go. Somewhere in the middle it got exciting enough that I wanted to finish it, but I was disappointed. I think Osbo...more

Well written dialogue. The plot was gripping, sort of a cold war spy thriller and mystery all in one. However, at about 3/4 of the way through the novel I felt that it was enough. Too much action became an unbelievable scenario that I finished just to get completion. The ending could have been a surprise if not for the constant pounding of forshadowing. Still, a good vacation read. Too bad I wasn't on vacation.
As I was cruising through book choices from my library, this book was listed as a mystery thriller, and while I hate to admit it, when I first downloaded it, i thought it was the book that the movie that came out a few years ago was--how wrong I was (and happily so)!
This story is the story of how being in the wrought place at the right time can drastically change your life. For Paul, an American doctor from LA who is visiting Paris for a conference, it is the right time and place. However, for...more

I had to knock this book down a star due to the last 150 pages or so. It loses serious steam there, not completely undoing the early, thrilling part of it but still. Also, while I love a good conspiracy read, I'm not at all a fan of the "everyman-becomes-Jason-Bourne" plot, which is prevalent in this book. And the ending tries to explain everything too neatly rather than letting it unfold during the narrative. I'm probably being harsh on this book because it was such a good read through most of...more
I read the Day of Confession by Allan Folsum and enjoyed it so I thought I should try The Day After Tomorrow (Ubermorgen). A GREAT decision!
This lengthy (a good thing) novel is a flowing epic of action. I found it to be captivating and highly entertaining. What I really liked was that the book is actually a series of related mini adventures headed to the development of the central theme.

Five star concept, characters, and plot, but with issues that go downhill from there. Despite those issues, I was compelled to finish the book although at times I was pulling my hair out with frustration and boredom.
It goes to four stars because it is far too long. The author takes every opportunity to take a five word sentence to fifty words, and it’s not necessary. Also, the book could have been shortened by 50% and not lost any of its impact. Far too wordy and meandering, especially toward t...more

Immediately there's action and you're pulled bodily into a mystifying and violent world, where there are few answers, but more and more questions. Evil is lurking around every corner, you can just feel it. Headless bodies are piling up. Police are baffled. And our hero seems ill-equipped to face an enemy he can barely comprehend.
What diabolical plot is soon to reach its chilling goal? Or will there be a final solution? Take a journey into uber-darkness, and a sinister world will be revealed.

Honestly, this book was a snooze-fest. It amazes me that people laud it as much as they do.
Here is a simple, bullet-point list with what this book does wrong:
1.) Kills the only potentially interesting character within the early chapters.
2.) Has pandering, over-long sex scenes as indulgent filler.
3.) Pointless plot.
4.) Dumb detectives that don't speak the native language of the nations they work in.
5.) Complicated plot for the sake of complication.
6.) Villains we cannot connect with.

I seemed to have a knack for picking up thriller books these days. And for some strange reason, I'm beginning to like it.
You know how as a kid, you love to ride the roller coaster? Then as you grow older, the ride comes in books, or relationships, or love life, or getting hooked.. I read this book as an advanced copy when I worked for the company who published it. It had us ALL (who worked there) hooked from the first sentence. I really don't remember the story now. But I remember it feeling like a "Divinci Code"-type book years later when that came out - that same WOW, can't believe this is happening, can't put it down. I was surprised that it never became widely known. I think the movie rights were bought immediately but it never materialized. I'd like to go back and re...more

The book imeediately caught my attention as it begins in a Parisian cafe and by coincidence I'd just returned from a short break there. The pace of the book is quite fast and although , throughout, the story line does become a bit ludicrous, ie:Dr Osbourne's immediate transition into a James Bond type character,it remains quite a gripping tale. One criticism may be that the final edit could have reduced it by around 100 pages. However i would be a liar if i said that I didnt enjoy it, so much so...more

The Day After Tomorrow was one of the first thrillers that I ever read, at age 12, from my school library.(I presume that the librarian had not read it herself, so as to include in the shelf, considering it had liberal doses of 'between the sheets' activities!)
And I LOVED it!
Err, not the 'between the sheets' part. The book. On the whole. ;)

Im ashamed to say that i had never heard of Allan Folsom before & just picked this up from a bookshelve in a cottage i was staying at .... what a good read ... fast paced from the first page you really hit the ground running with this book ... maybe a bit to soppy in parts for me and i didnt take to Vera at all ... but Mcvey & Osborn i liked and although i'd sort of guessed what Von Holden was up to towards the end i still thought the final chapters were very good .... this was a debut n...more
Well, this is a 4 star rating, for a 5 star book. A 5 star book simply because it is SO MUCH FUN!! Starts on the first page, and never slows down. When someone comes in my shop looking for an airplane book, this is the one I hand them, with a money back guarantee. Have sold many, many copies, with no refunds. So why is it a 4 star book? Because of the really stupid premise the plot is based on. However, that has no effect on what makes this a good read. Highly recommended for simple escapist rea...more

TOP read. Reminds me of Robert Ludlum, which I don't really usually read much due to the overwhelming political content. However this one balances it out with fast-paced action, and it keeps you guessing all the way to the end, where you'll be shocked. Long after I finished reading this book I was still a little disturbed with the implications of what unfolds at the end. To be exact, imagining if the story happens in real life, I felt very uneasy. It was a massive book but I was absolutely hooke...more
"Men come in three sizes, small, medium and Oh My God", naughtiest quote I've read in a book. You would think that's what this book is about. It isn't. (And I'm not about to give spoilers) international conspiracy like never before. I am yet to read a better book in a boring cover. If you've seen the movie and not read the book, you deserve a hard pinch from the author. I could almost hear the gunshots as I turned the pages. A must-must read! A thriller and an absolute page-turner!
I found the book's style, characters, settings, and descriptions all to be above average.
The two things that kept me from rating the book higher:
First, the "Organization" -- the cabal of bad guys in this story -- seemed way too organized and omnipotent to be believable.
Second, the ridiculous ending, which I and probably most readers saw coming miles away. In a strange way, the possibility of such an ending is what kept me going through the book. "Oh no, the author couldn't REALLY be taking us TH...more

Was highly recommended to me by Vivek. We did not find a copy for a long time at any bookstore we searched. Ended up suddenly spotting it at an airport! It's a sensational movie kinda book. I was rather frustrated with the length of it, although it was never very boring I must admit. I wish they could have come to the point (end) sooner. ;) Overall it's not really bad, but I personally felt it can be skipped. May be, 10-15 years ago, when it was released, I could have liked it too.
