Are you a fan of knitting ? Do you just love to sit and browse through the hundreds of knitting books looking for your next challenge of creation ? Unfortunately, I'm one of those people who never inherited the knitting gene - I just couldn't get my fingers around it but my mum , aunties and Nana can all knit. This is the ideal present for the Knitting Lovers. The Knitting Companion though as other things that may interest you if you aren't a knitter and I loved the format that Michelle had writ...more
This book achieved exactly what it set out to do – it was in many ways like a good friend. Michelle Edwards shares tales of her knitting adventures and how knitting interacted with her daily life of being a wife and mother.
There was so much about this book that I loved. I’m a bit of a crafty person and knitting is one of those things that I’ve dabbled in. The patterns that are included are beautiful and well explained. I enjoyed the mix of recipes, book suggestions and knitting patterns that end...more

Love knitting as much as I do reading a book, so combining these two things puts me in heaven.
If I read a book on my pc I can also do charity knitting for the hospital or other local charity.

I got a free time limited copy of this title from the publishers, Open Road Media, via Net Galley in exchange for a review.

This is more a book about knitters than knitting. I found it quite a quick read and while it's not really the kind of book I would add to my collection it's a book I would have happily read from the library.

Since I started collecting First Reads, collecting the mail has become one of my happiest tasks. The sense that "something special might arrive for me" infuses my day with some small bit of happy expectancy -- so much so that I broke my own "no buying more Stuff before moving" rule and bought a book for myself earlier this month. Last week A Knitter's Home Companion arrived in the mail, and I abandoned a ridiculous novel I'd selected from the library with higher hopes than it deserved in favor o...more
[apologies to anyone who read an earlier version of this--I pushed the wrong button and made it public before I was done with it.]
I got an advance proof of this book from ALA Midwinter. When I picked it up I was rather skeptical about whether I needed a book of "heartwarming stories, patterns, and recipes," but it was free, so I took it. My major question was: does this kind of book have any value for me when I have Ravelry at hand and any number of heartwarming knitting blogs and posts and gazi...more

Wanda brought me this one- she always brings me the new knitting books when they come in (she buys the 700s) before she puts them on the new book display.
This is just a sweet collection of essays on knitting, interspersed with a few patterns and recipes. I like reading stuff like this because it elevates my simple little hobby to something bigger, and because there are no knitters among my close friends so I don't have anyone who "gets" it. Books like this remind me that I'm not alone in feelin...more

This was a very enjoyable book. It is filled with stories about knitting, personal recollections about the craft of knitting, recipes and some easy projects.
The projects in the book could be made for personal use or for gift giving. There's a lacey scarf I want to make and a baby blanket. My friend in ireland just told me she's expecting so this pattern is going to come in handy very soon :)
The book itself is very nice with drawings for each chapter and beautiful photos of the projects to make.

Warm and fuzzy essays on knitting and being a knitter. If you are ever in Iowa, she recommends some good fiber-arts groups ...
Includes some yummy sounding recipes and a couple of simple patterns.
I particularly enjoyed her essay on charitable knitting. I do very little charitable knitting, but if I switched to pure wool yarn (instead of the cheap & colorful acrylics), perhaps I would do more?

Nice collection of stories about life, all include knitting. Knitting is more than a hobby; it is a sign of love. People who knit for others, love them. I liked her stories and how knitting is not just something we do, but something we are. Her stories weren't quite as catching as Ms. Herron's, but good all the same. Mrs. Edwards is a bit older I think.
Nice, cozy glimpse of an alien world where people are friendly and love to knit a lot. Made me feel inadequate. The people who write contemplative books about knitting, like ME and Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, are real knitters. I'm someone who knits some of the time, and is evidently inadequately reflective about the experience.
This was an amazingly quick read.
I rather thought this was going to be less about the author's personal experiences and more about general knitterly experiences. I found her voice too self centered oftentimes, when I feel like she could have communicated what she wanted to communicate in a more general way.

I loved this little book! If you are a knitter/crocheter, this book is a must for your shelf! The stories are heartwarming, the recipes sound delicious, and the patterns look wonderful! I borrowed this book from the library, but immediately order myself a copy as soon as I started to read it! Great book!!

A sweet little book with wonderful stories about knitting and family. Michelle is a local (to me) and it was so nice read about what knitting means to her. She also includes some very tempting recipes and knitting patterns. Definitely in the vein of Stephanie Pearl-McPhee and Perri Klass.
Really wasn't impressed with this book. The projects weren't all that creative, and all used Lion Brand yarn. I love Lion Brand, but I also love variety. I know that the blogger works for Lion Brand but this repeated use of one brand of yarn when the book isn't put out by the company felt like one big commercial. Being a young, single, childless knitter, the essays didn't appeal to me either.
A short, quick, pleasant read. Essays around the theme of knitting and the role it has played in the author's life. Enjoyable.
