Love this book! Knight night was one of the first storybooks my son would sit still for before bed.

The steps of the story, from the hallway, to the stairs, to the bath, to brushing teeth, to saying goodnight to Rex, to putting things away and climbing into bed are all completely relatable to his tiny self ... He's completely attentive and savors each page.

The illustrations are lovely - stylized and muted. They're simple and clear enough that my son "gets" them, but detailed enough that he is st...more

Night Knight by Owen Davey (Templar Books, 2011) begins and ends with a boy with a colander as a hat, holding a play horse, but the rest of the illustrations show a different story: a knight coming to the end of his day. The illustrations are playful and fun as the “knight” bathes with the fishes, jumps over crocodiles, and heads to his tower room. The story is one all kids can relate to – the need to go to bed – and yet the story comes across as playful and original. It’s easier to head to bed...more

Going to bed can be an adventure, especially for a young knight. He must head down the hallway and climb the stairs, bathe and brush his teeth, and say goodnight to Rex all before going to his room.

Though the words and story description above are simple enough, there’s nothing simple about “Night, Knight.” Using bold oranges, reds and yellows with accents of blues, author Owen Davey shows this knight’s adventures. Heading down the hallway and climbing the stairs beco...more

Knights, even this small one, know that going to bed is an adventure. This young knight knows that you have to be careful of alligators while brushing your brush and that your armor and other valuables must be put away before climbing the tower into bed and falling asleep next to your trusty steed. Night knight!

This short and sweet book is great for a toddler or preschool audience. The pages are full up with castles and dragons, armor and animals, with just a few words describing actions per pag...more

A little boy with a colander on his head transforms into a knight that is getting ready for bedtime. He gives a "ye olde yawn" and heads off on the great adventure for the night. He climbs mountains (stairs). He brushes teeth while dodging crocodiles. He turns out the lights (closes his "visor"). And he goes to sleep because "even a knight needs a good night's sleep."

I love the illustrations in this one. They are all browns, and rusts, and orangy-yellows. With a dab of cream and mint green here...more

A good, but not spectacular, bed time story. When a little boy puts on his helmet (a colander to the rest of us), his home is transformed in to a magical kingdom, and he can begin his quest to go to bed.

The art on this is appealing to my eyes, with strong, graphical shapes and a very distinct color palette. However, I'm not sure that the art would appeal to children, because of the somewhat monochromatic pages. I think it would depend on the kid!

Fun story to read together, although it is very sh...more

I got this book for my son who loves Knights. He is 6 and I thought it might be a little too simple for him. He loves the pictures and the cleaver idea of the story. He enjoyed the make-believe aspect of the book. It was a very simple idea with simple language and would be a good bedtime book for young boys. I also loved the vivid drawings. Highly reccomend.

I just read this book to Geddy (age 5) tonight. I liked the color-palette used, but I thought the story was kind of boring compared to other similar books. I think it almost would have worked better as a wordless picture book. I didn't say anything though because I try not to influence his opinion with mine, however he told me it was "dumb and boring".

Davey's book would be great for toddler and preschool programming. Perfect for this year's "Summer Reading Program" theme: Dream Big, Read! The knight's nighttime adventure is brought to life through the brilliant illustrations and simple text, allowing kids to re-tell the story or ad-lib. A soon-to-be classic I'm sure!

Absolutely charming. A colander-helmeted little boy has an imaginative bedtime, transforming ordinary bedtime rituals into "a great adventure." A bath becomes a a swim past wildlife in the moat, brushing teeth becomes a dodge past alligators. Illustrated with a limited palette of orange, brown and blue.

I bought this book after just flipping through and looking at a few of the pictures. The artwork is beautiful. After I got home, I realized I should probably read the story, which I LOVED as well. The little knight in this story uses his imagination to turn going to bed into a real adventure.

A little boy who wishes he was a real Knight, takes a pre-bed time adventure as Knight via his imagination. He rides a horse through the forest of his hallway, climbs mountains of stairs, and even faces crocodiles to brush his teeth.
This is fantastic book and will no doubt win awards.

Even knights must go to bed. Each page tells how the knight is finishing his day, including charging up the stairs on his mighty steed. In the end, the boy knight is depicted as he truly is. The illustrations are what brings this book to life.

A great bedtime story for any boy who is interested in, or likes to play knights! I borrowed a copy of this book from my library to read to a boy I babysit, and he absolutely adored it! I am now in the process of purchasing a copy, so I won't have to keep renewing the copy from the library.
Angie
This is a sweet little fantasy about going to bed. I love all the imagery of a knight on a quest. The story totally fits the going to bed journey and the knight's quest journey. This will make a great bedtime story.
Rachel
Good story about how imagination comes into even simple things like going to bed. Like how the illustrations portray both the real and imagined, although the yellow and orange colors are a little overwhelming.
Mary
The illustrations were quite fanciful but a little odd. The story was slight. A child interested in knights, however, would certainly enjoy hearing about a bedtime routine similar to his or hers.
Paula
Riding through the forest to reach his bedroom, a little knight battles crocodiles to brush his teeth and climbs a tall tower to get into his bed before settling down to sleep.
Robin
This is sure to be popular with youngsters who like knights, castles and dragons! Very fun with just a few words on each page and large illustrations.
Kris
Cute, simple story for young knights, especially at bedtime. Davey does a nice job making the art show both the boy's imaginings and what's really going on.
Meredith
A little boy imagines he is a knight going on a adventure as he prepares for bed. This book features stunning illustrations and very little text.
Tracey
children's picture book. Sparse words and imaginative illustrations--there is a sword in here (great for Waldorf students!), but no violence.
Amy
The illustrations are lively and have new things to notice every time you read. the book itself is simple and to the point. Loved it.

Transform bedtime with this knightly adventure. It tells the tale of an imaginative boy on his way to bed, in pictures showing the adventure and words telling the every day walk down the hall to his bed. Kinda cute.
Shannon
I loved the colors in this book. I guess it'd be a good bedtime read. But I don't have much use for a bedtime story in class. :)

I couldn't give it more stars because the text slowed the story too much. I think it would be perfect for a bedtime storytime.
Shelli
Cute simple read about a boy who imagines he is a knight. Knights have much more exciting bed time routines then young boys.
kate
Lovely orange colour scheme. Simple story about a little boy knight going to bed. Would recommend as a bedtime story.

Great story and play on words. Illustrations are fun too. My boys love this book.

Owen Davey describes his style as contemporary and nostalgic and likes to use a palette of warm, muted colors. His work has been featured in the New York Times and Jamie Oliver's food magazine. Owen has had many knightly adventures of his own where he lives in Bristol, England.
