Love this book! Knight night was one of the first storybooks my son would sit still for before bed.
The steps of the story, from the hallway, to the stairs, to the bath, to brushing teeth, to saying goodnight to Rex, to putting things away and climbing into bed are all completely relatable to his tiny self ... He's completely attentive and savors each page.

Night Knight by Owen Davey (Templar Books, 2011) begins and ends with a boy with a colander as a hat, holding a play horse, but the rest of the illustrations show a different story: a knight coming to the end of his day. The illustrations are playful and fun as the “knight” bathes with the fishes, jumps over crocodiles, and heads to his tower room. The story is one all kids can relate to – the need to go to bed – and yet the story comes across as playful and original. It’s easier to head to bed...more

Going to bed can be an adventure, especially for a young knight. He must head down the hallway and climb the stairs, bathe and brush his teeth, and say goodnight to Rex all before going to his room.
Though the words and story description above are simple enough, there’s nothing simple about “Night, Knight.” Using bold oranges, reds and yellows with accents of blues, author Owen Davey shows this knight’s adventures. Heading down the hallway and climbing the stairs beco...more

Knights, even this small one, know that going to bed is an adventure. This young knight knows that you have to be careful of alligators while brushing your brush and that your armor and other valuables must be put away before climbing the tower into bed and falling asleep next to your trusty steed. Night knight!

A little boy with a colander on his head transforms into a knight that is getting ready for bedtime. He gives a "ye olde yawn" and heads off on the great adventure for the night. He climbs mountains (stairs). He brushes teeth while dodging crocodiles. He turns out the lights (closes his "visor"). And he goes to sleep because "even a knight needs a good night's sleep."

A good, but not spectacular, bed time story. When a little boy puts on his helmet (a colander to the rest of us), his home is transformed in to a magical kingdom, and he can begin his quest to go to bed.
The art on this is appealing to my eyes, with strong, graphical shapes and a very distinct color palette. However, I'm not sure that the art would appeal to children, because of the somewhat monochromatic pages. I think it would depend on the kid!

I got this book for my son who loves Knights. He is 6 and I thought it might be a little too simple for him. He loves the pictures and the cleaver idea of the story. He enjoyed the make-believe aspect of the book. It was a very simple idea with simple language and would be a good bedtime book for young boys. I also loved the vivid drawings. Highly reccomend.
I just read this book to Geddy (age 5) tonight. I liked the color-palette used, but I thought the story was kind of boring compared to other similar books. I think it almost would have worked better as a wordless picture book. I didn't say anything though because I try not to influence his opinion with mine, however he told me it was "dumb and boring".
Davey's book would be great for toddler and preschool programming. Perfect for this year's "Summer Reading Program" theme: Dream Big, Read! The knight's nighttime adventure is brought to life through the brilliant illustrations and simple text, allowing kids to re-tell the story or ad-lib. A soon-to-be classic I'm sure!
Absolutely charming. A colander-helmeted little boy has an imaginative bedtime, transforming ordinary bedtime rituals into "a great adventure." A bath becomes a a swim past wildlife in the moat, brushing teeth becomes a dodge past alligators. Illustrated with a limited palette of orange, brown and blue.

Cute, simple story for young knights, especially at bedtime. Davey does a nice job making the art show both the boy's imaginings and what's really going on.
