Joe Schwartz made me an instant fan with his first short story collection Joe's Black T-Shirt. The Games Men Play is even better. These stories are dark, gritty snapshots of people you might pass by at any given time. These aren't just characters on paper. They feel real, as if they could step off the page and walk down the street with you. This falls somewhere between a 3 star and 4 star read, for me. There are lots of great stories in this book. Most of the subject matter is dark and gritty. The emphasis is on the darker aspects of life in a big city. The characters are realistic and most of the stories are compulsive reads. It does seems more geared towards a male readership, I think. I preferred the stories in the first half of the book more than the others. The later stories were altogether a bit too depressing for my tastes....more
