I frequently find I have ambiguous feelings when it comes to Michael Morpurgo's books. Often I have to put them on my 'pseudo-children' shelf: books ostensibly for children but actually aimed at nostalgic adults.

This one is less in that category than so many of his books. Sure, it's got one or two glances at the adult market. However its gaze is more firmly fixed on the interests of a child.

It's the endearing story of Johnny Trott, an orphan, who works as a bellboy at the Savoy. His daydreams of...more

Kaspar, by Michael Morpurgo, is a story about a young boy called Johnny Trott. Johnny works in the Savoy Hotel in London. He is trusted with the duty of looking after a guest’s cat – Kaspar. Johnny becomes close to Lizziebeth, the daughter of a rich couple who are staying in the hotel. He finds himself a passenger on The Titanic, along with Kaspar and Lizziebeth's family. As the ship hits the iceberg and the passengers panic, Johnny is only concerned with making sure that Kaspar and Lizziebeth g...more

This is a piece of historical fiction narrated by Johnny Trot, a fourteen-year -old orphan, living and working as a bellhop at London's Savoy Hotel. Kaspar comes into the tale on the arm of Countess Kadinsky and through an unfortunate circumstance becomes Johnny's charge. Lizziebeth, the strong headed little daughter of a wealthy American couple, eventually leads this fast-paced tale to the Titanic. The title is a bit deceptive, used probably to play upon the anniversary of the event. Kaspar is...more

A good book for younger kids about the Titanic. And rather than focus exclusively on the Titanic, Morpurgo first gets you to like and care about an American family and a British orphan and his cat. So when the boat hits the iceberg, you really want them all to survive.

4.5 stars. Read aloud for my 8-year-old's bedtime reading. I will mention that "Titanic" in the title refers to the ship, not the size of the cat. We both liked the story a lot - good characters and a happy ending (except for the ship sinking, of course).

The book is more about the boy than the cat and the Titanic part of the adventure only concerns the last third of the book or so, still it was an interesting read.

I really enjoyed it, it is a brilliant book. I found everything about the Titanic a bit sad though. :(

Michael Morpurgo is the author of many books for children, five of which have been made into films. He also writes his own screenplays and libretti for opera. Born in St Albans, Hertfordshire, in 1943, he was evacuated to Cumberland during the last years of the war, then returned to London, moving later to Essex. After a brief and unsuccessful spell in the army, he took up teaching and started to...more
