Poetry. "HEAVY PETTING is a hell of a sexy book. A sexy and generous book. A book where thighs are 'spread like warm apple butter, ' where one eye is so close to another there is no sight, where we don't 'feel clean unless...burning, ' where the not forgotten magic of the Mississippi River, 'giant but quiet' makes lovers fall asleep inside each other, where when it is 'too...more

Every once in a while I read a book that inspires me so much, feeds ideas directly to my brain so consistently, keeps giving me more than I expect, that I need to keep a notepad close by. I wrote at least eight mini-poems (or fragments) of my own while reading this book. While I was already a big fan from his first book, I Have Touched You, this new collection proved to me that Sherl's brilliance is no fluke.

"Gregory Sherl is going to be huge. Plain and simple. His chapbook I Have Touched You won Dark Sky Books’ first chapbook contest and is a whirlwind of sex and want and loneliness and worry. Poems of panic or panicked poems. Then comes Heavy Petting, the inaugural perfect-bound release from Katherine Sullivan’s YesYes Books and the first full-length collection from Sherl, which is as much a torrent of poetry as I’ve never seen – lovely with bitterness and obsession and angst and the most earnest...more

Really charming. The whole confessional thing gets a little repetitive. What I really appreciated was how it felt like it was written in sequence, probably because it was, for the most part, so you get the sense of progression and development. Sexy, too.

A great collection of quirky, charming, bleak, and adoring explorations of love and the general confusion of young adulthood. Twisted and beautiful images ("I check my checking account. I can't afford the finished product so we put the baby on layaway") draw readers in to Sherl's comprehension of the world and hover in the mind well after reading. An excellent read.

Great stuff, esp. the first section and the prose poetry at the end. Sometimes this poetry seems to operate by keeping the reader inside the associations of the poet. Luckily, we want to go wherever Gregory Sherl is taking us. Recommended reading: Sherl's The Oregon Trail Is the Oregon Trail.
