Shelves: favorites

There has never been a series that has given me as many goosebumps, made me want to scream for joy, and cry for lost ones. In literature world that seems to be filled with vampires and werewolves, this series is fantasically refreshing. I am in awe of how quickly I fell for Harmonia and Cadmus, but am pleased to say that they are now my new favorite fictional characters. This series is a MUST read!

This was another great book in the Bloodstone Saga, and once again Courtney Cole has inspired me to dig deeper and find out more about the histories she includes in her stories. There are very few authors who can create worlds that intersect with real life history and mythology who can make it realistic, interesting, and believable. There are very few authors who can create worlds that intersect with real life history and mythology who can make it realistic, interesting, and believable. Cole does this in all of the books I have read in this series.

In book one the main characters were in ancient Egypt, and book two took place in the mythological world of ancient Greece. This third novel in the saga still maintains the mythological Grecian world which holds the true identity of the main characters, but in order to save her husband, Cadmus, Harmonia has to transport back to the England of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. She takes her mother and father, Ares, God of War, and Aphrodite, Goddess of Love. Ares and Aphrodite take the roles of Lancelot and Guinevere, while Harmonia becomes Heleyne. Although in real time Cadmus's spirit is trapped away from his body in the spiritlands, during this book Harmonia is able to be with him again. He is living the life of one of the knights, Lucan. While Ares, Aphrodite, and Harmonia all now recognize their true roles as god and goddesses, Cadmus as Lucan does not know his true identity.

It is a little confusing to describe for those not familiar with the story. It has only been a little over a month since I read the last story, and there were still parts that I wish I had reread so that I could remind myself how some of the secondary characters related to one another. Still, even with a basic plotline that sounds a bit confusing, I never felt confused as I was reading. Every role made perfect sense in the course of the story.

I was glad to see Cadmus in this story in the role of Lucan. Because he is essentially dead to the world, there was potential that this book would not contain any of the wonderful relationship of Harmonia and Cadmus other than her drive to save him from the spiritlands. I really loved reading about Harmonia and Lucan when Lucan was forced to forget any of his past relationship with Harmonia in order to save himself and correct the damage done by the Fates to the world of King Arthur. In all of the books in this series we see Harmonia and Cadmus, whether as themselves or in another role, already in the middle of a well established relationship. In this instance, however, Lucan does not know who Harmonia really is, other than a maiden from the castle who he needs to protect. There were some sweet interactions between the two of them as Harmonia recognized his true identity and her great love for him while Lucan only approached her with the honor he would use toward any young woman. However, the more time that they spend together, the more I could see that he was drawn to Harmonia naturally. They were meant to be together, and he could sense it, I think.

There was a big revelation about a new relationship in the lives of Harmonia and Cadmus that had been hidden from them, and this revelation showcases exactly how manipulative and vindictive these horrible Fates were. This new relationship will be a big part of the last book in this saga, it seems, and I can't wait to see how Harmonia and Cadmus work together to make everything in their lives right finally.

This installment in the saga was extremely well-written, as were the first two books. There is a lot of imagery that helps to create an atmosphere for the story that draws me in as a reader. There is just the right amount of scenes of danger and creepiness -- not too much or too little. Too much of that turns me off as a reader, but too little would not allow me to truly understand what a difficult situation Harmonia found herself in. There was also just enough romance to illustrate the deep love Harmonia and Cadmus share. It is interesting in these books that although Harmonia and Cadmus are soul mates and share this deep love for one another, the two of them are not necessarily in tons of romantic scenes together. There isn't really a need to blatently show just how in love they are. It is extremely obvious simply by seeing the way the two of them interact. Harmonia doesn't need to spend paragraph after paragraph proclaiming her love for this man. She does, of course, mention often her love for him and her attraction to him, but it isn't over done in any way. I feel their love more for the subtle way they show it rather than any outward sign that is thrown in my face. It is beautiful to read a love story told in this subtle way.

This series is one that I highly recommend. It tells a great story of love, but it also tells a story of overcoming the trials life sends us. Harmonia, Cadmus, Ares, and Aphrodite have been manipulated throughout the centuries, but they will find a way to triumph in the end. It is a story of the eventual triumph of good over evil. This book in particular shows the power of love as Harmonia must decide whether or not to sacrifice herself to save those around her from a life of darkness and destruction. It is a wonderful story, and I cannot wait to see how the series ends in the final installment next year. For now, I am happy to reacquaint myself with the stories of King Arthur so that I can reread this story soon with a deeper knowlege than I had before. (less)

What's more awesome than ancient Egypt? Why, Greek mythology of course! And what's more awesome than Greek mythology? FREAKIN' KING ARTHUR AND CAMELOT, THAT'S WHAT!

Man, these books just keep getting better and better. More romance, more intrigue, more action-this series is literally just such a joy to read. I just have to say this author keeps blowing me away with these books. I’m totally and completely infatuated with them. I’d even go as far as to say that they may just be my favorite series of 2011, so here is my short, spoiler-free review because I soooo don’t want to give this plot away.

With My Last Breath picks up where Fated left off, with Harmonia (formally known as Macy/Charmaine…but now we know her true identity. Harmonia, daughter of Aphrodite and Ares, the Goddess of Peace and well, basically harmony!) is faced with the daunting task of bringing her beloved, Cadmus (formally known as Hasani) back to life. The Fates and their sisters, the Keres, are imprisoned and are no longer a direct threat on Olympus yet their one last blow could be Harmonia’s downfall. Cadmus lies basically dead, his soul trapped in the Wastelands and essentially un-restorable unless Harmonia can find the lost sword of Zeus.

Let me just say, without divulging ANY of the actual plot because it is just that awesome, that I think this is the best book in the series thus far. Harmonia finds herself having to be thrust back into a past life she’d once lived and what a life it is! Cadmus is still there, as the soul he was long before and completely ignorant of his role in the world of Olympus, but she knows she still has to save him in the present day reality or all will be lost. The twists and turns in the plot, and in the actual history are completely unexpected and keeps you on your toes. The history that the author pulls into this segment of the series is by far one of my favorite historical mythos of all times, and it’s familiar to everyone who’s ever stuck their head outside of a box, and that is part of the reason I think this author rocks so much, she takes a story that is such an deep-rooted part of the world’s history and turns it into this epic fictional adventure and you find yourself completely and totally enthralled with every second of it.

The characters, both fictional and real, are so believable in their roles. They’re developed thoroughly in such a way that you can’t even define fiction from real history, I find myself now going, “Well, so and so totally did that thing because he was under the influence of the Greek Gods,” even though…well…the Greek mythos was in no way originally related to the history. It’s mind boggling how thoroughly she weaves her worlds, her characters and her plots. The writing is flawless, the characters believable, the mythos and history blended like no-other, and well…let’s just say that I was absolutely dying to read the final installment.(less)

After I finished Fated, I shed a tear because I had no idea when the next book would be released. Much to my surprise, it was JUST released. I absolutely loved it and tore through the pages like there was tomorrow. I cannot wait for the fourth installment.

With My Last Breath finds our leading lady Harmonia in Camelot looking for the sword in the stone in order to save her soul mate and restore Olympus.
I really love how there is a totally different setting in each book of The Bloodstone saga. In book one we were in ancient Egypt, in book two we were in the land of greek gods and in this one Camelot! Where on earth is book four going to be set?!

This time around we see Harmonia facing some pretty massive challenges, not only does she have the mammoth task of finding the sword, but she also faces some real personal challenges as well. Does she tempt fate and risk changing the world as she knows it in order to help a few people in this one, or should she stand by and watch people die to keep the world balanced. She also has so much anger inside her at the fates for what they have put her though all these years, now that she finally knows the truth what should she do about it?

Once again there is a bit of a twist in this book. Even though I've come to expect twists in each book in this series, I still never see it coming! This one came as a complete shock to me! I'm not going to say exactly what happens as I know this book isn't due out for a couple of weeks yet. But lets just saw WOW and leave it at that!

I honestly cannot believe how much research and hard work must have gone into this book.
The reader is thrown straight into Camelot, the descriptions of the buildings, surrounding lands, food and even the clothes are exactly what I would have imagined Camelot to be like. I actually couldn't stop myself thinking of the BBC programme Merlin every time someone was mentioned!

Overall I loved this book. Out of the whole series so far this one is by far my favourite!
I am so excited to see where the next book is going to be set and also to find out how Harmonia's story will end!(less)

The third installment in the Bloodstone Saga was another fun and imaginative read from Courtney Cole. I wasn't sure what to expect when Cole sent Harmonia and company to Camelot--I didn't know how she would fit that into the story, but, true to the uniqueness of the series, it worked so well.

Sometimes you just need a fun, completely fantastical story to help you escape from the real world for a little while, and this book did that for me.

I really love The Bloodstone Saga by Courtney Cole, so I had high expectations for With My Last Breath. While I enjoyed the novel, it was not as good as the second book in the series (Fated). Fated ended with a huge cliff hanger, and as a result, we got a lot of action right from the beginning of the novel.

Just when Harmonia seemed to have everything she wants; husband Cadmus, mother Aphrodite, and father Ares; the Fates once again threw her for a loop when they demanded that she find Zeus's sword. To ensure that she goes after the sword, Cadmus is struck down and his soul is sent into the Wastelands to remain there until Harmonia is successful in retrieving the sword.

Heartbroken and devastated that once again the Fates seemed to have interfered in her life by taking away her husband, Harmonia, Ares, and Aphrodite time travel to the land of Camelot and Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.

This time around, Harmonia is Heleyne, Aphrodite is Queen Guinevere, and Ares is Sir Lancelot. The only surprise is that Ahmose appears as Merlin after he was thought to have been killed by the Fates for helping Harmonia discover the truth about her destiny.

If you have followed this series from the first book forward, you learned that Harmonia was a time traveling agent known as a Keeper who is given a very specific charge, or Daedal to watch over until it is time for her to die. For 2,000 years Harmonia has done the bidding of the fates, and has also died along with her charge as little more than a puppet to the fates who were her masters.

Harmonia later learned that she is actually the so called Chosen one who is supposed to bring balance to the world and the fates have been playing games with her the entire time. She is also known as the immortal goddess of harmony and contentment who can only be killed by using Zeus’s sword.

I so don’t want to spoil the entire series for those who haven’t read this series or what happens over the course of this story. I will say that I was happy that Cole time traveled Harmonia et al to the time of Arthur, Lancelot and Queen Guinevere and didn’t change what actually is “said” to happen to Arthur and his knights.

What she can do is throw readers into a spiral with a major surprise and naturally a cliffhanger ending and shocking surprise that leads into the final story of the series called My Tattered Bonds.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys time traveling, gods and goddess’s as well as a slew of other historical characters that may or may not have really existed throughout man’s history.

After the cliffhanger ending in Fated, Courtney Cole delivers a fantastic third installment to the Bloodstone Saga. With rich descriptions, flowing narrative and sword-clashing action, this book does not disappoint! In this story, Cole gives us her spin on Camelot and introduces us to great new abilities, frightening new developments and heartwrenching new characters. I can’t wait to see where she takes us next.

This one takes place in Camelot. I wish there were more details around the setting there way there was in the first book with Ancient Egypt. So much happening in the story though, that the setting suffers for it a bit. At times, through the three books, I've gotten a bit tired of the "soul-mate" focus. It makes sense, but I think it is driven a little too hard at times. Still enjoying it though.

I didn't comment on this series earlier because I was hoping it would get better. The first book, in my opinion, was the best in the series - so far. I connected to the two female leads...but not the male love interest. Most of the relationships felt superficial...except between the two ladies (not a romantic one).
