Ahh, how times have changed. I used to consider these books a good guilty pleasure; now I find there's a lot less pleasure and a lot more guilt. Kinsella is still an amusing, energetic writer, but Becky really grated on my nerves this time around. She's just so shallow and so frivolous, and while in the first few books she was also just a regular working girl, now that she's rich (thanks entirely to her husband), her insane overspending and materialism swiftly loses its charm and becomes...icky....more
first few pages made me laughed already but as i go later into the story YES....becky has gotten more shallow for some reason;it felt like someting was missing comparing from the previous series.
BUT
i'll admit;she is fab!
"she's a red-hed bitch, and i hate her"...that made me laugh so hard.how sophie kinsella create becky's mind is wonderful!shallow and materialistic but creative and one of a kind.

This is the fifth book in the Shopaholic series by Kinsella, and, I'm happy to say, an improvement over the last (Shopaholic & Sister). I don't want to spend a great deal of time catching you up on the whole series (check past blogs or Amazon for details), but in this installment Becky & Luke are pregnant with their first child. Like usual, Kinsella throws us right into it with three little words: "Ok. Don't panic."

I read the Shopaholic books as soon as I can get my hands on a copy. Sophie Kinsella is a really funny writer. She has sustained the Shopaholic idea through more sequels than most writers can. However, this book (and the previous one, Shopaholic and Sister) isn't as spot-on as the first two. I mean, isn't Becky ever going to learn to stop overspending? Every book involves her getting in a financial hole, then reforming at book's end, only to start over again in the next book. And of course, now ...more
this was my favorite of the whole series. partly because she doesn't do anything completely ridiculous, and you can see that she is learning and growing and communicating more, even if it's not as much as she should. i seriously love how becky and suze refer to people they don't like as "cows". maybe it's an english thing, but it seems like such a random choice of words. even though all along you know how kind hearted, fun and well meaning becky is, i love how it comes out even mor...more
I had the misfortune of buying this book before a long flight to Europe. Due to a lack of alternative entertainment, I read the book from cover to cover. While the book had some funny excerpts, my extreme dislike for the main character (Becky Brandon) overshadowed any enjoyment garnered from the book.
Rather than being lovable, I found Becky to be irresponsible, annoying and pretentious. For example, after Becky's husband explains that his company is "hemorrhaging money" and a...more

I checked out this book from our local library in hopes to try something a little different. This is the first I've read of any of the shopaholic books. I was aggravated by this book. How on earth could someone be so consumed with shopping and what other people think of them is beyond me. I don't think I'll ever understand. First off, Rebecca is impulsive and emotional. She's too over the top. Seems like every sentence she spoke had a note of excitement behind it. Honestly, I'm surprised she did...more
Yes, I am addicted. This book has been on the rental shelf since I got here, which means if I wanted it, I would have to pay and when I saw it on the regular shelf, I grabbed it. Girl has gotten less annoying as the books have gone on, but her character still makes no sense to me sometimes. How can someone that selfish and like shopping so much, but still appreciate the small town life? That seems like such a contradiction to me! Chaos ensues and Girl gets out of it. Some lame storyline with her...more
The Reader’s Advisory class I’m taking necessitates that I assign Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic series to a genre; by measuring it against the criteria presented in Joyce Saricks The Readers’ Advisory Guide to Genre Fiction, I can confidently declare it part of the “Women’s Lives and Relationships” genre. It is told from a women’s perspective (protagonist and titular shopaholic, Rebecca Bloomwood), set in contemporary times (modern day London), and generally optimistic and upbeat (Becky’s happy ...more
As with the previous books in this series, it takes me a while to get over my initial mixture of irritation and disbelief (is there some contempt mixed in there as well?)... Although as others have commented, she has toned down a bit, her lack of accountability (interestingly apropos here, actually) and the fact that she just rushes forward in foolishness drive me up the wall. At first I feared that as with the wedding venue in the previous book she would double-book ob-gyns, but that pitfall wa...more
I love the Shopaholic series. Or at least I used to. The books follow a woman who loves to shops, she's a bit flaky, but fun and carefree. And now she's having a baby. My problem with this book is that I felt like the character hadn't grown up any. After moving from London to New York, getting married, moving back to London, finding out that she has a lost sister, and now is having a baby, clearly which happened over a number of years, the character is still written as she was in the first book....more
I liked the first book, but as the series went on, Kinsella's books kinda lowered on the ratings.
First of all, I liked how Becky was pregnant, but maybe is Sophie had shown a little more maturity on the protagonists part, i would have believed that she was actually ready to be a mom.
Also, there was basically no romance between Luke and Becky, which got to me.
Another thing was that, Becky's shopping obsession was supposed to be something funny and something that shapened Becky ...more

It’s okay…..maybe.
Yes, there is a sense of hesitation. After reading all of the Shopaholic books, this latest installment of the series is definitely the most ‘dramatic’. I even wonder if Ms. Kinsella wrote this when she was with child because the book is oozing with hormones, so to speak. Therefore, I cannot fully commit to saying that I like it because the book failed to bring me the same old Becky Bloomwood-Brandon antics and humor. For example, I could not find a single witty Shopaholi...more

This one starts out slow and aggravating -- as Becky Bloomwood so often does. I find the series slightly more annoying now that she's rich and her shopping affliction is less a real problem and more of just a pesky bad habit which her husband can constantly bail her out of. Oh hardy har har, Becky can't possibly choose just one stroller so she buys four uber-strollers when the rest of us struggle to afford one mediocre one that we can make do with. And for some reason, her marriage and relations...more
Read the whole series this spring. I needed something light-hearted and funny, and these books fit the bill. What I liked about them: they made me laugh. I could identify with some of the rationalizations the character makes when buying things she doesn't really need. I loved her friendship with Suze. Her parents are a hoot, and she has a good relationship with them.

Diantara empat serial Shopaholic I think I like this book the most.

I like these books, I do, but I swear that my blood pressure is higher today than yesterday. I'm a horrible budgeter, but the way Becky spends in these books and the secrets she keeps make my a wreck. I think I was totally tense about her not understanding truly what having a baby means, she's out buying cute boots for the baby and saying she doesn't think she need a car seat. Yikes! All in all, a good and fun summer read, although, I could have done without half of the swearing.
Becky Bloomwood Brandon is back in the 5th installment of the Shopaholic series, Shopaholic And Baby. Becky and Luke are back from their extended holiday/honeymoon and Becky is pregnant with their first child. Since discovering that ‘shopping cures morning sickness’ she’s been determined that their baby will have the best of everything, in true Becky Bloomwood style. And that includes the best OB-GYN.

In this book, Rebecca and Luke are expecting their first child. Becky has to have everything for the new baby from the best pram down to 400 count crib sheets. Everything is perfect. Luke's job, Becky has the celebrity obstetrician that no one else can get into, a spot in British Vogue. Things couldn't be better. Than her world comes crashing down.
To her utter dismay, she finds out the this new doctor is Luke's ex-girlfriend who turns out to be a royal pain in the butt. She really is...more

I started reading the Shopaholic series in 2004. I loved the first book, Confessions of a Shopaholic and immediately jumped into Shopaholic Takes Manhattan, which is still my favorite of the series. It’s filled with humorous situations, however it takes a real look on the consequences of impulsive shopping. I read books 3 and 4, but when Shopaholic & Baby was released, I started it and then put it down.

After finishing the book I have to say that the end is much better than the beginning. Maybe it's the AP mother in me that was a little bothered by the whole baby as a fashion accessory frame of mine. I knew what to expect going in, but it still rubs me the wrong way even if a work of fictions.
Who would have thought that by the final chapters Becky would have returned all her designer baby gear and ended up being a breastfeeding, babywearing mama? That makes me happy. :)

Everything is perfect for Becky. She's pregnant, her and Luke have a fabulous house they're going to be buying (it even has a shoe room!), she's having a great time shopping for her baby, and she has a obstetrician who deals with all the celebrities, and she's going to be in Vogue. Perfect, that is, until she finds out that her obstetrician is Luke's ex-girlfriend. At first, everything is okay, but Luke begins to keep secrets from her and goes out with Venetia (the obstetrician) without Becky. ...more
I really loved this story, too. I loved it because it played on the insecurities of any pregnant woman that worries about losing her husband to another woman, while their body just keeps expanding out of control. This story also finally tied up why Luke loves Becky so much, which I feel really hasn't been laid out as much in the other books. Sometimes I don't like how Becky is always under the microscope with her husband, but that's part of the shopoholic storyline. I actually grew to love her h...more
Loved this book. Second favorite in the series. (Unless Mini Shopaholic proves me wrong?)
The pram shopping was delicious. It was like the Angel bag in the last book! I even wished that pictures were included. I didn't like how Becky used the crappy pram in the end! She should have used a nicer one! Maybe one with an animal print or something. Haha. I also loved the description of Fabia's house! The nurseries seemed amazing! It makes me want to have one. (From my last Shopaholic review) 'Oh Becky Bloomwood (I guess now she’s Becky Brandon)… I love these books. They’re so light and easy reads that make you feel good at the end. Each one of the Shopaholic books has the suspense of “How is Becky Bloomwood/Brandon going to get out her mess this time?!” They really remind me of I Love Lucy... This is a great series for those who like lighthearted books with fun.'

I'm reading the books of the Shopaholic-series totally out of order. I started with the one with the wedding (or two weddings actually), then read other Kinsella books and now picked up this one. Mostly because I just bought it (always hoped I would spot it somewhere at a second hand sale, but no such luck yet; I bet that now it will turn up everywhere I go) and maybe also it partly fits my situation. At least the bit about the baby. Thus I could understand some things mentioned about pregnancy ...more
These books are literary confections and make perfect vacation reads. A blurb on the book jacket compares these stories to classic "I Love Lucy" episodes. I couldn't agree more. Rebecca (aka: Bex or Becky) Brandon gets into and out of more scrapes and "ingenious" schemes. It also doesn't hurt that recent books are set in London. The British simply have some hysterical turns of phrase. In addition, I am getting to know this author and her plot devices. One particularly ...more

It's a little girl, with scrunched-up petal lips and a tuft of dark hair and hands in tiny fits, up by her ears. All that time, that's who was in there. And it's weird, but the minute I saw her I just thought: IT'S YOU. Of course it is.”
