Every time I start a new book/series that involves vampires I worry that I'm about to waste time reading the same story I've read so many times before. I love vampire stories, but they need to bring something fresh to the table, and be somewhat original for me to actually enjoy them. This book did that.

The first few pages of this book I struggled with. It quickly seemed like a story that I felt disinterested in, because it was the typical boy meets girl story. In a matter of two days the main characters become ~~obsessed~~ in love with each other, and I almost stopped right there. I kept reading because Camille was a genuinely interesting character, in my opinion. She has been abused, betrayed, abandoned, and more by people she loved and trusted. She was a broken woman, fleeing her problems, and just trying to get away from it all to live a normal life. Quite a relatable scenario in the sense that most woman don't actually flee the country to get away from our problems, but sometimes we would like to!

This author definitely has skills in character development. At first, we are introduced to this fragile, damaged woman, and after she finds out about the vampires she transforms into a sarcastic, more confident person. That's also right after her ex just tried to kill her in her sleep! She's still drawn and attracted to Gavin, but this time she's not just jumping into things so quickly. She demands answers. Gavin was okay as a character. I didn't love him or hate him. He was just nothing special in comparison to all of the men I read about each day. Audrey and Gabe were great. I really liked them.

The plot itself did go beyond expectations, and I was happy for that. Introducing real issues such as physical and emotional abuse to readers who may or may not know how that feels can be tough. I feel the author did a superb job with this. The adventure of going through Samira to enter Amaranth was exciting. (view spoiler)

It a nutshell this is a pretty short, fast paced paranormal story that does keep you interested until the very end. It starts off rocky, but finds it's footing rather quickly. By the end of this book you will really want to know what's going to happen next. Very entertaining, enjoyable read, that I would recommend to all paranormal fans of any age. The quality of writing is high A wonderful start to an exciting series I look forward to continuing.

This is just a side note, but I love that Breaking Benjamin was mentioned. Loveeee them! One more sidenote: the cover is gorgeous!(less)

3.5 out of 5! I’d wanted to read Amaranth for a while so I was thrilled when Rachael Wade gave me a copy to review. Firstly, the cover is what initially attracted me to the book; take a look, isn’t it lovely? Then secondly after reading the blurb, I though vampires and hoodoo? That must be interesting. And now after reading the book, overall I generally liked it.

Camille is a 21 year old girl who travels to Paris in order to get away from her abusive ex-boyfriend. While in Paris she meets handsome and charming Gavin who she feels an instant attraction to but their meeting is quiet brief. After travelling around Paris, two years have passed and Camille has been living in Louisiana. She’s dated another abusive boyfriend who is currently her ex but he’s still trying to get her back. It’s then when is she working that she meets Gavin again and she is suddenly taken on a whirlwind of a relationship and she starts finding out things that she never thought possible existed.

I really did enjoy this book. It was definitely one I was looking forward to starting and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where the author now takes the rest of the series. From chapter one, I was taken on an enjoyable journey where I was intrigued to discover more of the world that Rachael has created. It was imaginable, realistic and the storyline is quiet unique. The characters were loveable and although I struggled to connect with Camille as much as I did with Gavin, I still really enjoyed how much their relationship developed. I loved how Gavin was so shy at times and came across quiet vulnerable too. The secondary characters were second to none, with Joel being one of my favourites. His sense of humour was amazing and I don’t think this book would have been the same without him. He definitely was a fantastic addition to this story.

The story line itself had quite a few laughs but also had a few sad times, so there was a good mix of emotions used. It was also full of excitement, romance and suspense. By the end of the book, the story has been left open in quite a few areas making us readers wanting more and boy, do I want more. Rachael has done a great job with Amaranth and I for one will look forward to reading future books by her.

I absolutely LOVE the cover. The colors & the text make it simple yet striking. A beautiful cover makes you want to read the book. Oh, and purple and blue are my favorite colors!

The book talked about what women constantly face especially in relationship, how some continually experience violence from their supposedly protectors and lovers. It’s nice that Camille somehow finds it in her heart that everything was too much and that she should stand for herself and leaves that guy.

It’s a different take on vampire stuffs..another conflict.. It seems vampires have other abilities too,,..they don’t only suck blood, also dreams, desire and hope too.. wow! Amaranth seems to be a wonderful place…and I can’t help but think about how Gavin and Camille end up, would they live as humans or as vampires…

I wish too that Gabe and Audrey would be expanded in the story.. or maybe that Ms. Wade could write their own story..(just me and my overly-reactive imaginings…lol..)

The first meeting of the characters are unforgettable… it’s simply a wonderful coincidence…lol.. The characters are lovable and real.. you could relate to them easily…

At first I think the story is slow-paced, but when it got to the 2nd up to the last part, I find myself engulfed with too much actions, revelations, and unconditional love the characters have for each other.

The end part of the book blow me away.. it’s too much..actions here and there…I have never been engrossed in a story and then it left me off the hook… OMG! What else could this book do to me..:D

Talk of a real cliffhanger….. I hate the last part, especially when it keeps telling me that I couldn’t stay put until I read the next book --The Gates lol… I’ll definitely be looking and begging for this one…. Highly recommended!

What an amazing book I COULD NOT put it down it was a fascinating story and it flowed so lovely I was taken in from page one. This is a truly must read vampire book with love, excitement and adventure you will NOT WANT TO MISS!!

I read this for reviewing purposes, but found myself pulled in and really enjoyed it. Camille is a wonderful character, who is smart yet fearful. She is pulled in by Gavin, and to my dismay, they completely fall for each other in just a couple of days. As another reviewer said, I also almost stopped reading right then. But I kept going and found the story to really develop and come to life. I really like Camille, and still want to know more about her.

Amaranth is the debut novel of author Rachel Wade and the first book of The Resistance trilogy. This seriously blew my mind away. I wasn’t expecting to like it at all. I read the description and was expecting some corny vampire story, but boy was I wrong. This book is so different from any other vampire stories I’ve read. The vampires in this story actually have a purpose in which they live for. This book covered a lot of topics like physical and emotional abuse made it even more relatable.

The story starts off with Camille arriving in Paris looking for an escape from her life in Seattle where an abusive boyfriend awaits. While in Paris she meets the mysterious Gavin and they have an immediate connection even if they were only together for a short amount of time. Two years later and Camille’s living in Lafayette, Louisiana where she’s found herself in yet another abusive relationship. While at work one day Camille bumps into Gavin and the two soon start to fall for each other. Camille soon finds herself in the middle of a war between two sides of the vampire world. One side with Camille and Gavin's friends who are part of a resistance against the vampire queen. Then the other side is the one of the vampire queen who sends exiled vampires into slavery in the city of Amaranth.

Camille is such a great main character, the thing I love about her is that she’s real. She has actual problems which make her relatable. In the beginning she’s kind of broken, but throughout the book she puts herself back together and ends up being stronger then before. Then there’s Gavin! He was such a great character. You could tell right from the beginning that he and Camille share a connection. The thing I loved about him was that you could tell that his feelings for Camille were genuine and that he really did love her, it wasn’t fake at all. Camille’s best friend Audrey was an amazing character. She convinced Camille to stand up to her abusive boyfriend the minute she found out what was happening.

The one thing that I didn’t like about this book was the pace. I felt like the whole book was rushed. Camille and Gavin's relationship happened really fast. It wasn’t really explained in great detail, but that didn’t make it any less great. After like the first half of the book it was all about the vampires, their history, and the upcoming war that the characters were all involved in. I really liked how this book always kept me guessing! I never once knew what was going to happen which was great because I kept on reading without getting bored. This book had some seriously funny parts, but there was also parts when it was really emotional and suspenseful.

I can’t wait for the sequel The Gates, I will definitely be reading it!

Now here is the aspect about the book that I didn’t care for at all… we find Camille again in an abusive relationship. I have seen with emotional, verbal, and physical abuse most of my life, knowing and loving a victim of this type of abuse I know firsthand the emotional fall out. I love that the author is bringing this up as I know lots of teenagers struggle with body image and self-confidence however this is a very tricky topic to write about in a young adult/adult romance novel. I think the character or her best friend needs to have a bit more knowledge on how to deal with a victim. In NO WAY am I saying the author condones or glorifies the subject, in any case I didn’t feel it captures enough outrage that this is going on… make sense? I hope so…

Then we are taken on a Journey of discovery with Camille as she breaks up with scum #2 and a whirlwind romance with the supernaturally sexy Gavin. Camille has to navigate through the discovery that vampires exist and that some are closer than she realized.

Now here is the other issue I have with the book, I didn’t connect with the characters or understand some of their actions. I didn’t get emotionally involved with the characters, but this could be quickly solved with an edit. Also this is the first in the series so I am extremely interested in what book 2 will bring in April.
With all that being said I would still recommend this series, the world is unique and vampires are a bit different, not allot but enough.

I would recommend mothers read this with their older daughters; it is wildly entertaining and a chance to talk about a deeper topic.

P.S. I found this AMAZING looking model named Arthur Keller and I just couldn’t stop finding amazing pictures of him. The even better thing about sexy Gavin was he has a couple looks the casual look and the dressed to kill look, soooooo I have to show you both! Plus I happen to have found both looks! Enjoy…

I really and truly loved this book! It was so different from what I usually read in the fantasy genre.

At the beginning I was so wrapped up in Camille’s story that I totally forgot that this was book was supposed to have some fantasy and paranormal elements. So when the fantasy elements came into play I was blown away!

As Camille tries to break away from her abusive boyfriend who continues to stalk her and won’t take no for an answer she meets Gavin Devereaux. He is dark and handsome and only has eyes for Camille. As Gavin and Camille’s relationship continues to grow things become more supernatural when Gavin tells Camille that he is a vampire as well her best friend Audrey. Then things get really interesting when the rest of the supernatural beings are introduced and boy there are a lot of twist and turns from then on. The story really takes off and there’s a huge amount of romance and action to satisfy my needs! I really loved Joel’s character he was super sweet and hot!

This book will keep you guessing till the very end! Rachael Wade really took her time with all the characters and I loved how you couldn’t tell this was going to be a paranormal read in the beginning and then when the fantasy came it was amazing! I Loved Loved the amazing twist at the end of how all the characters are connected it was really shocking and I wanted to read more! This book totally took me by surprise and its hard to believe this is her first book!

Recommend to: Twilight and Evermore(but way better than Evermore )

Really enjoyed this novel. I was in the mood for a light vampire romance and this hit the spot perfectly. I really liked how 'humanish' the vamps were in this one - not so many restrictions as usual. The premise was on making peace/living peacefully among humans sans eating/killing, but still adventurous enough as the idea was to outrule the evil Vamp Queen who promoted the evil vampire behaviors.

I loved this book! Its your classic paranormal romance.
Camille is 21 and went off to Paris to escape, if only for a while, her abusive relationship with her now ex-boyfriend. While there she walks, literally, into Gavin. And he is gorgeous! The story starts off in beautiful Paris where Camille meets Gavin for the first time. Their first meeting is sweet and cute but much too short.

Analysis of plot & characters:
Rachael Wade, armed with a new and refreshing idea that is set aside from the cliché vampire tales of today, came at the readers with a burning story with definitely lit up my interest. With a main character who was involved in abusive relations, the story already adds a realistic feel to it as many can sympathise or relate with the downside to dating. Yet as we watch the likeable main character of Camille travel the depths of beautiful Paris and the surprise encounter with a stranger like Gavin, we get the subtle hints that there’s something in the air for her and we are proved right as later on, Rachael adds a touch of romance to the story which is always a plus ;) After meeting Gavin a second time after her surprise encounter, she starts to unearth secrets that change the world around her yet we as readers are taken on this journey with her, as Wade allows us to see the change Camille encounters.

Not only that, but through Rachael’s writing we get sprinkles of romance, suspece, humour (in the form of Joel who I loved) as well as some sadness which doesn’t overshadow the novel but brings more realism to the book. I definitely found myself smiling and feeling a wrench in my heart as I read this and I loved that it brought emotions like that out in me (:

The authors writing technique was an additional bonus to the delightful story as I found myself becoming lost in the world Wade had created and her writing had an exquisite flow to it which allowed me to read uninterrupted. The characters too were built up with enough substance and mystery which allowed readers to get closer and familiarise themselves with a number of characters in the book.

Overall:
What can I say, I loved reading this refreshing tale and I can’t wait for what Rachael has next in this series! Add in the fact that Rachael herself is an awesome and immensely kind person, well I can’t wait to read ANY story she brings out and is definitely someone I’ll be pining to read books on, so thanks again Rachael for being an awesome author and person ;)(less)

I enjoyed this book. If I say that with a slight note of surprise, it's because that, indeed, I was pleasantly surprised.

It's a story of vampire meets girl and they both fall in love, and they both face challenges to be together. With so much out there with the same type of plot, it is really difficult not to make comparisons.

This book was shorter that I thought it would be. It was a quick read. But it should have been a longer book. There was room for more, and it was needed. I really didn't connect with the world of Amaranth; I needed more information to really envision what this place was, and how it came to be. And this Queen that rules it - what an interesting character. I know the book did not revolve around her, but she felt like an integral part of the story, and I wish there was more character development with her, and who she was.

The 1.5 year span between the first chapter and the second threw me off a little bit. I wasn't sure why it was necessary and left me scratching my head a little bit. Same to the scene where Camille gets whisked off to London in a flash by her protector, with no explanation as to how they got there in the time that they had. I had to reread a couple of pages back, thinking that I missed something, but I hadn't.

Besides these small points, the novel kept my interested from beginning to finish. The main characters were well developed and believable. I felt empathy for our main female character through her emotional upheavals, that being with her abusive relationships. I enjoyed her blossom as she began her new romance with Gavin.

I really enjoyed how the author used and wrote the action scenes. They were fluid. I could play them out in my head. And that, to me, is important in connecting with a story.

Rachel Wade did a great job. I think this is her first published novel, and I congratulate her for this great first effort. (less)

It didn't take me long to get invested in the story. The writing style was easy to follow and the pacing was good. Gavin is very likable and I found myself rooting for their relationship to work, if for his sake alone. I had a much harder time connecting to Camille. The first big turn off was in the moment she struggled to hide evidence of her abusive boyfriend to her best friend. I can't relate to a woman who would take a year to kick a guy like Jerk #2 to the curb. Then, when vampire stuff comes to light, she is inconsistent. She's angry; She wants to see Gavin; She loves Gavin; She can't be with Gavin; Then she can't be without Gavin. --On a side note, the developments with Camille's best friend seemed to come out of nowhere. I wish that had not been so abrupt. And by the way, I would have been a lot more pissed off with her than Gavin for how things went down... but I digress.

There is a lot more to the story than I have laid out here. And while I didn't love everything about it, I didn't want to put it down. There was nothing predictable about the storyline and I cared enough about poor Gavin to be invested in how things played out. I must warn you, though, that while there is romance, there is no sex. The book is part of a trilogy, though, so I'll hold out hope that it will come in the next installment. There is some resolution to the immediate story arc, but as the book ends, this tale is far from over. Almost 4 stars.

This book is not for me. The only reason I tried to read was because it was free on Kindle. Amaranth is filled with line after line of overused cliches. The characters are either annoying, unbelievable, or underdeveloped. I couldn't care less about any of them. The way some of them reacted to certain circumstances was completely ridiculous. Wow is my first and continued reaction. I literally could not put this book down, it is so intense, so endearing, so inspiring of empathy. What the protagonist Camille endures-and her exquisite talent at self-analysis-is riveting. Absolutely impossible to break away from this book. Without need for a spoiler, I can express this: Camille has a major crack in the foundation of her psyche. For whatever reasons, her inner strength and her intuition don’t seem to match up. What she is, is a magnet for domestic abusers, in her case relationship abusers, males who first build up their hold over her by verbal and psychological denigration, then “progress” to physical battering. Due to the quake faults in her psychological makeup, Camille gravitates to these, and magnetizes them; but when she encounters anyone who might be more “normal” and non-abusive, she can’t recognize that individual’s worth and tends to shunt him aside. Her only outlets seem to be a complete change of foundational beliefs, so that she can break away and then stay strong, on her own; or suicide; or enduring till one of these violent males eventually kills her. Not much of a choice, and to the reader, the only right option seems obvious; get real, get right, and get out.

But such a solution is not the way our heroine sees it: instead she turns to Hoodoo, the Southern Louisiana version of Voodoo as it has been practiced in Haiti and elsewhere. Camille intends to rely on protection spells to keep the abusers away and at bay-not legal protection orders-despite the fact that her local supplier insists there is more at stake than Camille realizes and that the protection spells may not stop the abuser’s advance. Where many modern-day women and girls would think first of abuse shelters, arrest warrants, and restraining orders, Camille heads for the paranormal resources: first, the Hoodoo spells; and then, the reappearance in her life of the sexy yet diffident Gavin Devereaux, whom she had first unexpectedly encountered two years earlier on a visit to Paris. Gavin, of course, is very much more than he appears. Camille is about to peel away a veil that has kept an entire different probability hidden from her-and she has tangled with powers greater than her own human strength.

This is a well- and carefully-thought-out novel, with skillful world-building, believability, and characters who ring with intensity and reality. The plotting (on both sides of the veil of reality) is extraordinary and very realistic-the reader will accept that any and all of it could actually come to pass. Whenever you begin this book, do set aside a block of time, for you won’t turn away from it till you’re finished, and you’ll find yourself longing for the next volume in the trilogy.

It was very Twilight-esque which made it for a boring read at first. And the main character didn't seem like her age, I thought she was much younger when I first started reading the book. Overall it was an enjoyable read that got more interesting near the end. There's a lot going on in the book and the reader is only given minimal information. At times the dialogue seems a bit forced and awkward but I look forward to reading the rest of this series because the ending is a real cliff hanger. I th...more

well this book was ok.....
I liked the story line so that is why i give it two stars.. it was interesting how vampires got to get their curse removed and live in Amaranth and how they had a queen.
So now i ran out of good things to say about this book. I am the kind of reader who likes her characters to be likable... if they dont then I will not enjoy the book.. this was the case. This is the first book in the Resistance trilogy, and it was a great way to kick it off. Camille Hart is fleeing an abusive relationship back home in Seattle by taking a vacation to Paris. While there, she literally bumps into charming Gavin. They share a brief conversation/walk, and then go their separate ways.

I love a good vampire story and Amaranth didn’t disappoint. It gave a fresh new twist on a time old tale of love, death, and ever after. I was captured by the grace of the opening chapters in Paris where we find our young heroine reinventing herself, falling for the beauty of Paris and of a handsome gentleman who stumbles across her literally in the café.
