Sounds a bit like Jennifer's body, Right?
Wrong.
I can say that once I started reading this book, I wasn't reminded of that movie at all. The author did an amazing job making this book entirely unique. I really did LOVE Static. It totally rocked my socks off! No pun intended. In my opinion It held the same kind of appeal as The Modern Faerie Tales by Holly Black. Made for the more mature YA audience because of mild drug use, language, and not-very consensual sex. It is a fast-paced, deliciously da...more

Static is thrilling and edgy and a great paranormal read. The heroine, Salem, is a groupie who discovers there's more to Thane, the lead singer of her favorite punk rocker band Malice, than she imagined. After getting invited backstage, she wakes up in a dumpster and the life she once lived is gone, replaced by a nightmare she must face or die. You will root for Salem and you will love this book!

When I saw the cover of this novel I wasn't too sure what to expect, I just knew that it would have something to do with music and Rock N Roll hence the girl in the tartan skirt holding an awesome red and white electric guitar, but that was as far as I had gotten. As readers know I am a cover lover and that was the reason I purchased this book as I loved the look of the cover and thought to myself hmmm --- that could be a book I am interested in.
Static took me surprisingly not only into the worl...more

As much as I love vampire fiction it was fun to read something that was paranormal but different. I dont want to spoil it too much and say what the characters are. But they are not shifters and not vampires. And it was a great story.

The main characters of Salem and Trevor are well developed and you feel like you know enough about them to have their decisions make sense. Many of the secondary characters (members of the band Malice) are not as well-developed. But for being the secondary, evil char...more

"Parents hide your little rockers because the demons are coming to town to suck out their souls"
At first glance at the cover I expected I would be getting into a contemporary novel about a girl in a band, but when you read that synopsis, it's anything but.
I devoured this book when I started reading it pulled me in. I always tend to be on the side of the "bad guys" in the books. I love the dark side that challenges, overpowers and sometimes protect the main characters. It happened again to me he...more

I'm not a huge reader of YA books. I've noticed that some (not all) authors dumb down their writing for a younger crowd. Authors I love in their mainstream genres will tackle a YA and I wince my through it.

Tawny Stokes isn't one of those authors and Static isn't one of those books.

I became sucked into Salem's story immediately. Salem is a regular teenage girl who has a massive crush on a rockband, especially the lead singer Thane. Things do not go according to plan for Salem is giving up her vir...more

Review by Shyla: Right out the gate I realized that Static wasn’t your average YA novel. The world Salem Vale lives in is gritty, dark and at times almost too real for a seventeen year old. With an ex groupie for a Mother, Goth Style, and balls the size of King Kong, Salem is a strange mixture of maturity, darkness, and vulnerability. Salem and her best friend Chloe have spent their entire summer following around their favorite band Malice, with all of their attempts to get backstage ending in f...more

Static is an edgy YA paranormal book. I was pretty impressed actually – it was even better than I thought it would be. It's about a 17 year old girl named Salem who is determined to lose her virginity to the lead singer of a rock band. She basically seems obsessed with him. Little does she know, there is a very good reason for that. Thane, the lead singer of the band Malice, isn't what he seems. She finally gets a chance to meet him and next thing Salem knows, she wakes up in a dumpster somewher...more

Salem is a typical seventeen year old girl that is following her favorite band Malice around Idaho. She is infatuated with the lead singer Thane. The story starts with Salem and her best friend Chloe at Malice’s last show. Salem manages to get a back stage pass, but only one. Chloe lets her go by herself and Salem ends up waking up in a dumpster later the next day. When she gets home she ends up dieing.

Waking up in the hospital, Salem realizes something is wrong with her, especially when her eye...more

Pleasantly surprised. Kind of reminded me of an episode from Charmed, but not completely.
Basically, the famous rock group Malice, is a group of demons that brainwash and feed on the souls and sexual energies of young teenage groupies/girls. I liked that Salem was a flawed heroine, giving up her virginity to a complete stranger (leader singer of the band, Malice). Unfortunately, she's tossed out like trash, and the band assumes she's dead due to her soul being sucked dry. Luckily, she meet...more

After flying through the pages of Demon Whisperer I simply could not wait to read Static. At the same time I was a little nervous about reading Static because it's about a girl who plans to lose her virginity to a rock-star and so I thought that there would be sex in the book which I'm not always keen on but I have to say that in Static it was tastefully done. There's not really very much of a sex scene so I thought that was really good.

I started reading Static and I just couldn't stop. I really...more

Talk about some life changing music! I really loved this book. I think the plot line of this book really grips the reader. I am always amazed at the writer's out of the box imagination to create such a great and wonderful story!

Ok, first the plot line of this book is nothing like I've read before. I enjoyed being pulled in all kinds of directions but also diving into a book with a unique storyline. I love the thought of music becoming static. If what you hearing is not all that your hearing, but...more

This book is hard to explain. It felt rushed, I would have added 200 more pages and a little more depth to it. It was an okay kind of light read, but it could have been so much more! The story, the idea, the characters, it all had a lot of potential but it felt short of what I expected. It felt too simple at the end, like Stokes said: "Enough of this book." and she simply packed up a pretty solution and a happy faerie tale ending and voilá! you've got a finished book!

Tawny Stokes’s debut, Static, completely took my by surprise! I didn’t know if I was going to like it or not, but once I started, I couldn’t stop reading Static, and finished it in no time.

One of the things I liked the most about Static is that isn’t censored. For a young adult book—especially a paranormal one, it’s pretty gritty and raw. I loved how down to earth it all seemed. The mythology Tawny Stokes has created for Static was fantastic, and was just detailed enough to enjoy Static.

I really liked the story of this book. It was fresh and new and had the potential to be amazing. Unfortunately the author made it very young feeling and a bit too light-hearted for my taste. I would have loved a bit more seriousness to the book. Salem seems very well-adjusted to what happened to her. She does freak out about the succubus change, but the rape fact is just glossed over. Didn't like that.

However, the big fault with this book is the length. I felt that if the author just dragged ou...more

I recently read Static by Tawny Stokes. Starting with the cover... seriously... I love it. I think it's definitely one that'll catch eyes on a shelf. I would, however, recommend this for the older crowd. It's definitely not for tweens.

I really enjoyed Salem, the book's main character. She was funny and sassy and wasn't perfect. She's dealing with a lot and messing up along the way. Too often characters are "perfect" and that bugs me. Salem was very refreshing. Also, Salem Vale... I kinda want he...more

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Static. It's a fast-paced story, with an incredibly unique paranormal aspect going on. I don't want to spoil you all by telling you what paranormal being Static involves, but it's definitely a rarity in YA, and Tawny even includes a mythical figure in it...again, I won't mention who, but I'll give you a hint...in most version of his myth, he's pretty tight with King Arthur. ;)

Salem was a fantastic main character, she was feisty, and had a personality that jumped righ...more

I have recently had the immense pleasure of reading not one, but two books by Tawny Stokes, and I can tell you I will be waiting for more. Her writing is edgy and intense, fast paced and fun. I love how Stokes is able to write a book that can be so dark one page, and have me chuckling the next. Static is a book like no other that I have read before, and I have to say it was pretty frickin awesome.

Salem starts off as this star-struck girl that just wants to meet the lead singer of her favorite ba...more

Ojala tuviera secuela ;)

This book sounds like the movie 'Jennifer's Body' with Megan Fox. Girl liks band, band does bad things to her, changes her, Band gets killed as punishment. Except in the movie it's the best friend who kills the band and her friend. Sounds interesting.

This book was so poorly written, I had to give up on the fourth chapter. The plot line was rushed, some of the narrative made me cringe, and the main character was driving me insane. Ugh.

Ooooohhhhh! Me encantan estos tipos de libros. Me mantienen siempre en suspenso & ay el romance, EL ROMANCE!

Oh God! THIS IS what I call a good book! ;)
Definitivamente, me encanto, estuvo super brutal, aunque aveces salia con unas cosas medias raras, pero estuvo super bueno.
~Great job, Tawny! <3

A well told, fast paced, music infused story with an edgy, at times dark spin on the paranormal genre is how I'd describe this great book. Just loved it!

Sencillo, pero divertido. Nada del otro mundo, no es ALTAMENTE recomendable, pero me gustó.

This book was kind of ridiculous, but I liked it. I haven't seen many YA books that involve incubi and their offspring, let alone do so well. But this book does a great job with it. It was a little over the top with the romance between the two main characters, but I've come to just expect that in in YA books lately. I do think the author does a wonderful job of creating that relationship in a not creepy way, and the girl gets to stand on her own, grow, and save the day, which I appreciate.

Tawny Stokes has always been a writer. From an early age, she’d spin tales of serial killers in love, vampires taking over the world, and sometimes about fluffy bunnies turned bunnicidal maniacs. An honour student in high school, with a penchant for math and English, you’d never know it by the foot high blue Mohawk and Doc Martens, which often got her into trouble. No longer a Mohawk wearer, Tawny...more
