This is my second attempt at writing this review. The first one wound up rambling on for three pages before I got so bored of my own writing I had to scrap it. The book itself is a thinly veiled polemic, and instead of focusing on the novel, I found myself tearing apart Mr. Savage's far rightwing worldview. I'm going to try and curb that this time around.

One of the things I enjoy doing is reading things I hate, by which I mean reading things I strongly disagree with. Previously I...more

ABUSE OF POWER, the debut novel by conservative radio talk show host Michael Savage, is an intriguing thriller that might just surprise you.

Jack Hatfield, a hardened war correspondent, has been fired from his job for controversial statements. He’s even banned from entering the UK. Jack takes a job in San Francisco as a freelance news producer.

A carjacking turns deadly one afternoon when military-grade explosives are found after the car wrecks. Jack, riding with the SFPD bomb squad, arrives at th...more

"Abuse of Power" reminding me a little of some of writer Joel C. Rosenberg's books, which have been categorized by some as Christian Sunday School discussions disguised as political thrillers. These books tend to be filled with God, Liberty, and the American way, which is the literary equivalent of some of the great old John Wayne films. That can work for any book, however I felt this plot and story line sometimes required leaps of faith to make it all very believable.

Many, I'm sure will enjoy...more

This is an average espionage thriller written by an above average intellect. If you are at all familiar with Dr. Savage's political writings, be assured that this book is more ideologically balanced then you might assume. Set in San Francisco, Dr. Savage, a long time resident, colors the book with insider's knowledge of the city's social and historical atmosphere. The aspects of the plot based on this theme are the best in the narrative. Placed during the Wars in Iraq/Afghanistan, the main antag...more

Abuse of Power by Michael Savage is his first novel. Doctor Savage is a conservative radio talk show host and a very prolific non-fiction writer, focusing on conservative politics and natural healing. Abuse of Power is a very credible first novel focusing on the possible harm that political correctness may result in with regards to Muslim extremist terrorism. Any conservative or independent reader should enjoy this action-packed thriller but liberals may dislike his digs at the government and pr...more

An exciting thriller, cover to cover. I could go into details, but the other reviewers have already done that.

Is this an autobiographical polemic? Of course...every writer plugs his/her own ideology. So what? Don't let it scare you away. Even if you don't like Savage or his take on things, just set your politics aside and enjoy the story for what it is: pure, scary, terrorist-fighting fun.

The only drawback: adult content.
If not for certain risque passages, Abuse of Power would be great for teen...more

I think a new genre is in order: the "thriller-written-by-talk-radio-host" genre. "Abuse of Power" is, overall, a much better book than Glenn Beck's "Overton Window." This is primarily due to it actually being thrilling. Dr. Savage presents a much more action-packed novel than Beck that relies, not upon conspiracy theory, but actual existential threat for it's source of tension. The characters here are much more fully realized than in "Overton," with believable back stories and motivations for w...more

The best radio talk show host in America spreads his wings into the Thriller book genre. You can hear the voice of Mr. Savage telling this story if you have listened to his radio show. It has a realistic plot in these days of world terrorism. He starts off slow. I had difficulties in wanting to pick the book up between readings. But he did a excellent job of closing the plot to his readers satisfaction. It is not his usual writing that he excels in, but for his first attempt at writing a Thrille...more

For a first thriller effort, this was not too bad. Political thrillers are a very tough genre as the readers in that arena well know. Vince Flynn, Alex Berenson, Tom Clancy, et al have pretty much set a very high bar for newcomers to the genre.

Savage's Abuse of Power is fast moving and contains just enough red herrings to keep the reader interested. There are a couple of areas where I thought Savage over wrote the scene, but that's just my opinion.

I will be interested in a follow on novel with m...more

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I've listened to Michael Savage's radio program before and was afraid it would be inundated with ultra right wing rhetoric. Tis was not the case at all. While I could certainly see his efforts to insert some of his conservative opinions, it was done in tap tasteful way that complemented the plot, rather than detracted from it. Though the end of the book, was predictable, the story was not. I would recommend it.

After listening to MS in a lot of drive time, I decided to read his fiction book as I admired him for practicing a different skill. I was excited to read a adventure type book as it had been a long time. It was ok in the adventure arena and writing was pretty good, better than I thought it might be. Overall, it was basically another way for him to get his strong views out into the public. He basically is the main character, really. Enjoyed it- good short read.

Abuse of Power had a very captivating plot filled with many twists.

The locations were creatively described and the characters were deep and very interesting.

There was only one drawback: too much sex.

I also found an interesting failure in editing. On page 252 of the hardback during one of the too numerous sex scenes was this: "Her long brown hair was highlighted against the window and he saw a light snow falling outside."

Five pages later it is revealed what the exact date was: "August twentieth...more

I have never read Savage before, but found this to be interesting and complex enough to hold one's interest. His conservative viewpoint was prevalent in the plot, yet he didn't over-do it. Jack Hatfield made for a good protagonist and his group of friends were fun to see. It's not often one sees Seniors as action hero types. All in all, although this was slow reading for me (I had a plethora of external distractions) I found it to be a good read.

I was warned about the ridiculous amount of conservative agenda in this thriller. It was really to bad - the plotting was not to bad, at least plausible for a thriller. Will I read another of his books - only if the author has learned to tell a story and leave the conservative agenda for his talk show or nonfiction books.

I give this 3 stars because Michael Savage is the man. Realistically I would probably do 2 stars if it were someone else. The story was predictable and I thought that there was too much sex. I did really like the parts that he included in his story about current events and also personal events that happened to him.

A page turning story about a an attempted terrorist attack in San Francisco. This book will make you wonder what might really be possible, if the right/wrong people got involved in such a plot. This story worked well for me, great characters, exciting story-line, some interesting plot twists.

Pleasantly surprised. I know that Michael Savage is really out there sometimes with his political views but this was a well written book that keeps you glued. If you can look past you preconceptions of the author, I think you will highly enjoy this book.

Clearly written as a polemical exercise. Stretches credulity (mine, anyway) beyond the breaking point. Good guys too heroic, caricatures of real people too thinly disguised. I haven't read any of the author's nonfiction, but I suspect it's more suitable for his purposes.

Excellent. This is Dr. Savage's first political thriller novel. He restored my interests in great fiction story telling. A must-become classic!! Has been on the NY Times best seller list for weeks. Kudos to Michael !!!!!

This is a suspenseful thriller about terrorists and powerful Americans who might have reason to help them in their attack on the United States. It's thought-provoking and fun to read.

This book would have benefitted from an editor doing a better job of trimming and keeping the book on track. Otherwise, it just struck me as just another mediocre predictable thriller.

I haven't read a spy-thriller in a long time. Abuse of Power kept me turning pages as fast as I could. I only wished I was on vacation so I could have spent more time reading.
Donna Andres
The political views of the author are front and center in this political thriller. The story and action keep you reading. Great story for out times.

Interesting novel of the anti-terrorism genre, with thinly veiled summary of Savages trials and tribulations as well as various characters of national notoriety...Savage works in much of his world view, which, for the most part, matches mine...enjoyed it!!!

I couldn't get into this. Too much of the novel is filled with Savage's political views which detracted from the story instead of set up Jack's character.

Very good except sexual content too explicit for me. Was very educational in other aspects and informative of the government and abuse of power!

This book is a great read! Michael Savage definitely did himself proud wit this thriller. There is action, intrigue, everything one could want in a thriller.

My advice: READ THIS BOOK!!!

3.5 stars actually.

Because of the endless description of unimportant topics, it was hard for me to focus on the story in the beginning The second half of the book didn't have quite as much description and the action picked up so it kept my attention.

Nothing spectacular, but good.

Dr. Michael Savage is a multimedia icon in the conservative movement. The Telegraph in the U.K. ranked him as one of the most influential conservatives in the United States, and with 10 million weekly listeners, the Berkeley Ph.D. is the third most listened to conservative talk show host. Recently featured in The New Yorker and Playboy, Dr. Savage is the author of many books, including the politic...more
