4 -5 stars – Romantic Suspense

Oh I really enjoyed this one! A sexy, rugged former Army Ranger turned PI alpha hero and a sweet, spunky teacher masquerading as a stripper to find her missing sister have scorching hot chemistry. It’s got the perfect mix of steamy romance, suspense, drama, and action, great characters, and even had me tearing up. I’d only previously read the first book of the series, Against the Wind, but this worked really well as a standalone read.

I’ve always liked a hero/heroine combination that puts a strong, alpha male who likes to be in charge, falling for a quiet, sort of shy and in this case, a nice kindergarten teacher, who turns out to be much tougher than she seems. Amy has come to L.A. to try to figure out what happened to her missing sister, Rachael. She starts asking questions to the wrong people and needs Johnnie’s help. On the case, they track a lot of different lead

Against the Night by Kat Martin

Kat Martin is an author who knows how to spin a tale (of course, she is a bestselling author of over fifty Historical and Contemporary Romance novels with over twelve million copies of her books sold world-wide in twenty foreign countries) and she still manages to come up with a great story line. Against the Night is refreshing, tantalizing, and full of mystery.

In Against the Night, I enjoyed the story line as it moved along at a satisfying pace, yet
3-1/2 stars.
A solid romantic suspense read. The heroine was nice and spunky. She had moments where she might have tipped over into TSTL but the author saved it by not making the stuff she did too dangerous and setting the whole thing up really well that she was determined to save her sister. The hero was hot and was one of those guys who knew how to do what he did and he was good at it. He wasn't an alpha jerk just really competent.

The story made sense and the suspense element held together real

Good story. Amy is a kindergarten teacher masquerading as an exotic dancer in an attempt to find her missing sister. Johnnie is a PI who has come to the club to catch a bail jumper. He notices her right away and can't get her out of his mind. When he meets her he quickly realizes that she is not what she appears to be and is further fascinated. Amy has noticed him also, and when she finds out what he does is determined to ask him to help her find her sister.

I loved the two of them together. John

Pretty good book. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first book in this 2nd Raines trilogy, but it was still a good read.

Series Note:
Second book of the second "Raines of Wind Canyon" trilogy. You don't have to have read the first trilogy first, and really, I don't think you have to have read the first book of this second trilogy first either. It stand pretty well on its own.

I would have liked this SO much more if Amy wasn't too stupid to live. Her whole character is a mess. She is a Kindergarten school teacher from Michigan who decides to investigate her sister's disappearance by moonlighting as a stripper in LA... WHAT?!?!? Oh wait I don't really know what I am doing so I will get help from a professional, but I don't have money to pay him so I will offer to pay him in sex. So now she is a stripping, hooking, Kindergarten teacher?!?! UGH! She then insists that she ...more

Former Army Ranger and now Private Investigator, Johnnie Riggs is hanging out in a strip joint looking for a crook who's skipped his bail. But his attention is very distracted by a sexy gal who's an exotic pole dancer. Finally, he sees his prey and grabs him, but Johnnie returns to ask the dancer out. This is the first in a series of novels called The Raines of Wind Canyon, and it strikes a new pose for Kat Martin!

This being his second night, he has waited in a dark corner on the lookout for his target. Can I love you enough to make you stay?

John Riggs is a former ranger, full-time PI, and all around do not mess with me tough guy. So why is Amy Brewer, this slip of a woman, an exotic dancer no less making his blood boil to a point of combustion. There is something beneath the exterior when you look really deep and see that her innocence is genuine. When their paths cross and she hires him to find her missing sister – John

Browsing through a K-Mart, I stumbled upon this book for a good price. I hadn't read any Kat Martin before, but the blurb sounded interesting, so I thought I would give it a go.
I was so pleased that I did. I really enjoyed this story. Johnnie was a great hero. The pace was fast enough, and the steam factor was good.
There was plenty of interesting secondary characters, and I have since learned that they are from previous books, which I will now being finding for my tbr. I doubt they will sit ther

I have read all the books before this one but in all honesty all of them can be read as stand alone. I could not put this down it was exciting the story swept me away, Amy and John were hot and heavy and so likable. I didn't see the end coming which was really nice, I do like it when you get thrown a curve ball at the end. I am looking forward to reading the next one, it is on my kobo waiting.

loved every part of this book. it has love and action...always something going on throughout the entire book!! loved how they made the leading lady Amy a school teacher turned stripper to find her missing stripper/inspiring actress sister who takes no crap even if she is a little shy to real life. Loved even more how they made the leading man Johnnie tall, dark, broad chested and oozing with yumminess, there is so much knowledge and experience in that head of his that he is the perfect hero. Great addition to romantic suspense series

Talk about chemistry--that's what happens between naive Amy and ex-Ranger P.I. Johnnie Riggs in a twisting, suspenseful search for Amy's missing sister. Part of the "Against the..." series by Kat Martin, this is a really exciting book with lots of steam and excitement generated by Riggs and Amy as they pursue the goal of finding sister Rachael. Along the way they encounter bad guys (drug cartel members and crooked cops) and good guys (former Rangers, Sea

Action packed from the word go. This storyline covers a sister, from Michigan, choosing to go undercover, by herself, to find out what happened to her sister who has gone missing in California. Needing help she enlists a PI who is quite attracted to her (she has a very interesting occupation). The PI finds out that there are some very bad people who were involved with the missing sister. He tries to help without involving the 'good' sister but she's having none of that. The ending is quite excit ...more

This has to be my favorite in this series. The heroine is an unrepentant stripper. Usually in romance novels, if the heroine is doing something polite culture frowns on, there always has to be a "reckoning" or "repentance." The activity in question can't just be something that happened because of the circumstances at the moment, it always has to be distilled as an isolated incident that the character is sorry for. Not so in this novel. She is a stripper and she likes it and is good at it. Very r ...more

This fifth novel in The Raines of Wind Canyon series features a hero who is a friend of the original brothers and who has figured in past novels as a background character. As a former Army Ranger he has been involved in some serious stuff and is now using many of those skills as a private investigator and sometimes bounty hunter who apprehends those who have jumped bail, especially in areas that are home to some of his past military buddies. Now Johnny Riggs is trailing a child molester and that ...more

An ex Army Ranger? Ummm, yum!

Pros: plenty going on to make this an interesting story with some "mystery" to it. I really liked the hint of romance between her sister & the yummy cop.

Cons: there is some predictability to some of the storyline. This may be silly, but the thing that bothered me the most about this book was the way her profession as a school teacher seemed like some sort of taboo! He's ready to jump in when she's a stripper, the second he finds out she's a teacher he has a cor

Against the Night is not like anything else I've read and I'm glad I did.

I'm new to the works of Kat Martin. I'm not exactly sure why I'd waited so long to try her works, but I did. I'm glad I remedied the situation. I love a good suspense story and this one packs one heck of a wallop. This is part of a series, but I never felt lost or confused. Actually having the little asides with the secondary characters made the story more dimens

Johnnie Riggs is a bounty hunter, PI and recovery expert. With the exception of his close friends and ex-ranger buddies, Johnnie is a loner. Convinced he isn’t relationship material, he doesn’t get close to anyone. On a case to return a pedophile that has skipped bail, he stakes out an exotic dance bar. While scanning the crowd, he can’t help but notice Amy. Posing as Angel an exotic dancer; Amy is a pretty, petite blonde, who looks out of place. Overall another good read. The basic idea that Amy would go undercover as an erotic dancer is totally over the top - but that's over with pretty quickly once she teams up with Johnnie. The physical is very hot but their mental relationship is good too. She's not just a cute little K teacher after all - she knows cars, can shoot, and is pretty good at self-defense. He is very sweet with Ellie, his landlady, and assorted other older women and young children, he's even good at mentoring the younger ...more
