part of the fun of working with kids and books is catching up on YA lit and inhabiting the mind of a 12-year old for a few weeks. this book, the first in a series, is completely hokey, with cheesy dialogue and a cartoonish villain, but it works. a boy stumbles upon a 1909 honus wagner baseball card in an old lady's attic, a monumental discovery in and of itself, but then learns he can bring the player to life and travel back through time just by touching it, to the year on the card. forget kids,...more

This is a book for people that like reading, understand the concept of baseball, and enjoy watching and playing baseball. I love all of those and it is the best collection of books I have ever read. You need to ive Dan Gutman a lot of credit on this series of books, So far, I have read, Jackie and Me, Honus and Me, Babe and me, Shoeless Joe and Me, Mickey and Me, and more. I am currently reading Abner and me, and they have all been great. They all have the same story line, but Joe Stoshack Trave...more

This is a book from the children's room at the library. It's intended for probably, a fifth grade reading level. I loved it...my husband loved it. It's a super-quick read about a young man who 'meets' Honus Wagner! Of course, Honus has been dead since 1955, but there is an element of fantasy here that makes the story wonderful.
For those who don't know, Honus Wagner played most of his baseball career as a shortstop for the Pittsburg (no H) Pirates! His card is worth more than any other cards beca...more

Joe Stoshack loves baseball and collects baseball cards, doing small jobs in the neighborhood to make small purchases. He wasn't pleased to empty Miss Young's attic foe only $5, but when he drops a box and finds a rare Honus Wagner card, "the" most valuable baseball card ever. Should Joe tell his mom? Should he give some, or all, of the money to Miss Young? Would it solve all his problems? Joe wasn't thinking about these however when he was holding the card. Another Oregon Battle of the Books read. Honus and Me is a nice little tale of a young baseball card enthusiast who discovers the world's most valuable card, a 1909 Honus Wagner, in his neighbor's attic. While daydreaming about his coming riches and wrestling with the ethics of having salvaged the valuable card without permission, Joe discovers that he can use the card to bring the real Honus Wagner to him, and travel back in time to join Honus at the 1909 World Series.

Dan Gutman used to visit a school I taught in. He came a few years in a row. That he lives up the road makes it easy. I'm a huge baseball fan and this book appealed to me as the Honus Wagner card is the Holy Grail, as it were, of baseball card collectors.
The book is okay. I am not much on time travel, but I found it an interesting story nonetheless. I read this aloud to my students, who seemed to enjoy it too.

I thought that this book was very interesting. I mean, it was a very creative idea, thinking of going back in time with a baseball card. This book was about Stosh, I believe to be a student in middle school, who plays baseball, but isn't so good at it. He had already found out he has powers to get himself by in time with a baseball card, but then he meets someone he never thought he would. Honus Wagner, a famous baseball player. He shares experiences with him, but soon new secrets are revealed,...more

I think this book is very informational, because it is a combination facts and fiction. This is the first book in the Baseball Card Adventures. Joe Stoshack(Stosh)the main character gets job to clean out his neighbors attic and stumbles over a piece of cardboard. This piece of cardboard was not any kind of cardboard it was a Honus Wagner T-206 baseball card. Joe is holding the card in his hand and gets a tingling sensation and finds Honus Wagner in his room. He gets back to 1909 when the Pittsbu...more

Honus & Me is a phenomenally written book by author Dan Gutman. Its about a young boy named Joe Stoshack (Stosh for short) who has a mysterious ability to travel through time, but only through baseball cards. Which isn't much of a problem considering he loves baseball. While one day cleaning an attic of a older lady named Amanda Young he discovers a very rare T-206 Honus Wagner card. At first he wants to sell but after getting nearly scammed by the baseball shop card owner, he decides to vis...more

I've read most of the books of this series but this book is probably my favorite. This text tells the story of the Stoshack family. They are extremly poor and need some money and they need it fast. So Joey Stoshack a kid was offered to clean the attic of their neighbor Mrs. Young. She offered to pay him five dollars. Finally he expecpted. I can tell you the attic very messy. When he's about to finish he notices a box of baseball cards. There he finds magic, a very rare baseball card, reading Hon...more

A cute book. Joe Stoshack discovers a rare Honus Wagner card, and is suddenly able to bring Wagner into the 90s. Honus and Joe discuss baseball (obviously), and Honus gives Joe the mental tools to being a better baseball player.
I have to say, I liked Gutman's The Homework Machine better than this, but this one is still good. It would especially be good for young baseballers who perhaps don't like to read -- it has enough baseball talk in it (stats, discussion of Joe's little league games, baseb...more

Read this as a way to discuss books with my 9 year old son. Hoped that it would get him excited about reading and off the technology for a bit. This book definitely worked.
While it is not meant for an adult, it does have an interesting fictional story mixed with some truth. I found about a great old ballplayer that nobody mentions these days except for the value of his baseball card.
I would recommend it for any kid that's into baseball, and for their parents as a way to connect.

While cleaning out her neighbor's attic, Joe Stoshack comes across the most valuable card in baseball history: Honus Wagner. Even more remarkable is what happens that night.
Hokey but nice. Hans seems like a cool guy - gotta love baseball back when guys lived their entire life in one town. Baseball fans will love this: the rivalry between Ty Cobb and Honus, the attitude toward fans and salaries presented by Honus, along with his stories, the 1909 World series, and the chance of finding the dream...more

Dan Gutman's "Baseball Card Adventures" books are a reliable, well-written series that are excellent for 4-6 (and some 3rd) boys who love baseball. They skillfully blend history with a modern and interesting protagonist (Joe Stoshak) who brings a modern boy's perspective to history, and Gutman's research is always meticulous. Won't really be appealing to most girls, and probably not to boys who don't like baseball, though.
This book makes me think of when I am playing baseball. It describes what Honus Wagner was like and his purpose for playing baseball, which was the love of the sport. He loved to play baseball a lot, but he also liked to do things outside of the park. In the story, he likes to time-travel. He travels forward in from 1909 to see a boy who has his baseball card. I would recommend this book to people who really like baseball.
Should be 3.5 stars, really. This is one of the books on my daughter's Reading Olympics list, and she just finished it. I figured I'd check it out too before I returned it to the library. Maybe my son (yet another bookworm like Mom & big sis) will likewise enjoy this someday. I admire the characters for the decisions they made. And there wasn't so much in-depth sports talk that I got lost or frustrated.
The books cover would have never attracted my attention if I had not read it in class. It was a really long book which talked about how a boy found the most valuable t-206 Honus Wagner card in mint condition! Then things start to get weird as if the card comes to life. It made me want to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame even though I don't care for baseball that much.
I thought this book was average. It had a very good premise of a boy going back in time to get money and meet a great baseball player. However it was extremely repetitive in comparison to other books he's wrote, Babe and Me, Jackie and me and on. All in all the book was very unrealistic at some points but had a good main idea, but it was a copy cat. 21/2stars if I could give it that.
In this book, Joe finds a Honus baseball card while cleaning his neighbor's attic. He knows it is worth A LOT of money. But, he keeps it. He figures out he can travel back in time. Honus visits Joe and Joe visits Honus. If you want to find out the rest of this book, I think you'd better read it. I really liked this book from the start. Remember, don't judge a book by it's cover!
I think I would have really liked this when I was 10-12. Now, it's kind of boring and poorly written. The plot feels rushed. However, I do think Gutman does a good job of portraying how a kid might really react in some of the situations Stosh faces. Ignoring the improbability of the time travel, of course.
