As our country's politicians engage in bitter partisan battles, focused on protecting their own jobs but not on doing the nation's business, and political pundits shout louder and shriller to improve their ratings, it's no wonder that Americans have little faith in their government. But is America as divided as the politicians and talking heads would have us believe? Do ha ...more

I am one of the forty percent of independents who the author says will influence elections. True, she says that an overwhelming plurality of Americans feel unrepresented by the two major political parties. She conducted an impressive amount of interviews in the swing states of Virginia, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Colorado, and Ohio. She has those that question our president’s ability to lead. Finally, she briefly discusses some solutions to the problem, mainly open primaries and less “gerrym ...more

Near the end I found this book to almost drag on but the message was clear throughout. I enjoyed reading the breakdown of the swing states, especially handy ahead of the 2012 presidential election.

So far so good. Definitely speaks to why I am an Independent. It is business as usual in DC. More than half the politician don't even know what the heck is going on with the average American. They continue to cater to special interest and those giving them money for their campaigns. What I wonder is, why have an election and involve the people? Why not just have an election where it is those special interests electing the candidate that would most serve them? Oh wait, that is what is happening in ...more

This is a current affairs book, about swing or independent voters. It was written prior to the 2012 election, so I should have read it before now. Its premise is that independent voters usually decided elections, but the 2012 presidential election defied that premise. Romney was the independent vote but still lost the election. The book provides a good history of independents impact on various elections over time, and it described what was happening a few years ago, but it couldn't be expected t ...more

This was a mildly amusing book about swing voters. It mainly discussed voting patterns in the 2008 and 2010 elections.
