Orpheus
by
Dan DeWitt (Goodreads Author)
Cameron Holt is lucky enough to survive the initial outbreak that turns an idyllic New England island community into a hive of the walking, and running, dead. So is his son, Ethan. Now, the only thing keeping Holt going is the desire to either rescue his missing son from the zombies or, more likely, remove him permanently from their ranks.

ORPHEUS is an interesting tale of man vs zombie on an island resort. The main character, nicknamed Orpheus (at first I was picturing Morpheus from THE MATRIX), is a tough ex-AF man who has a personal mission which seems to align with the needs of the zombie-threatened community he finds himself part of. He wants to find his family, especially his son. To do this, he needs to locate survivors and clear the island of these zombies, place by place.

Sharon's Review:
This was a very intelligent portrayal of zombies as the victims of a virus - its cause and effect. They were treated as an actuality, and realistic tactics were used to overcome the threat. There are no handy laser pistols to solve the problem. There is no supernatural cause, graveyards don't spill out the undead. Zombies don't stumble around groaning and moaning. They simply react to smell, sight and sound to feed their voracious hunger. Cameron Holt and his crew of survivors, a...more

Zombieeeeeees! I had come across DeWitt's book Underneath: Short Tales of Horror and the Supernatural for free in the Kindle store, and thought I'd check it out for some quick spooky tales. The stories, though unique and interesting, were not ones I particularly cared too much for, but the book was worth it just for the preview of "Orpheus." Though I love my zombie movies and shows ("The Walking Dead".. Ahhhh, can't wait for S3!!), zombie books aren't really my thing to read. But I was .. infect...more
If you are ready for a story that moves past the shamblers. This action packed mystery thriller is for you. There are those fans that refuse to embrace the fast zombies and other variants who may find this novel un-pure, but I think this story keeps to the terror of bygone days. To be honest, his new variant is far more frightening than shambles or runners. I won't spoil your shock, but talk about. Disturbing.
In general this was a fast paced adrenaline rush full of red herrings, enjoyable.
