Although very little can be done to alter the course of dementia, much can be done to maximize the quality of life of people with the condition. Research as well as practical experience suggest that behavior management, especially through programs that provide meaningful and constructive activity, is currently the most effective treatment.

The programs developed at the Alzheimer's Care Center in Gardiner, Maine, beginning in the late 80's. The book is really geared towards people working in/running programs, but it was very accessible, very thoughtful, and I was able to get a lot of it as an individual.

Reading the morning paper. Stay away from hard news and current events which can be frightening or bewildering. Focus on the weather (high and low temps, temps in other cities, etc); Today's Chuckle or Thought; Ann Lander...more
