AFTER RELEASE
WHY WAS THAT SO SHORT?!
Also, the art style is wierd, I hope they change it.
My main concern when I started reading this was that it wouldn't feel like an Avatar experience. But the author did a great job at capturing the essence of the show.

Also, I ship Kataang. I was happy to see more of them together. HOWEVER, sweetie. That's all.

Must have for any Avatar fan, and I'm extremely angry I have to wait until MAY (shit) to read the next installm More...

It's been four years since we've last seen anything new from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Fans has been begging for more, and released earlier this month, they got it. This graphic novel, from Dark Horse Comics, picks up where the show left off. The next stage, after the war is ended, is to restore harmony, with the Harmony Restoration Movement, which seeks to remove fire nation colonies on earth nation land. All concede to the plan, and suddenly we're moved forward a year later, The Restoration More...

This is a direct sequel to the Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series, and it takes place after the conclusion of that series. Writer Gene Luen Yang (I loved his graphic novel American Born Chinese) has a great feel for the flavor and characters of the show while loading this story with political themes and elements of classic tragedy.

The story focuses on the deadly promise that Ang has made to Zuko, and Zuko's own struggles with the burden of leadership of the Fire Nation. Start More...

New Release! I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley for purposes of review. (I read that one, and then went out the day it arrived in stores, bought a hard copy and read it again.)

Premise: The war is over, but bringing peace to the Four Nations isn't as simple as winning a battle. This is the continuing story of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

I LOVE THIS. I More...

I really do thank God for NetGalley ALL The Time.
One more reason why: Getting to read Avatar comics pre-release!

Rating: A

What Avatar The Last Airbender (A:TLA) comic is: "The Promise Part 1" is a beautifully done story, by the same Mike DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the creators of the popular TV series.

Why I picked it up: You might know we've been doing an Avatar Watch/Rewatch at home of the comic series,we're in the middle of Season 3: Fire More...

I don't normally Five Star books and this review might have some Bias so just bear with me.
I have watched the Animated Series well over 5 times now; and the end always got me.
Maybe because it was the end of a saga. And I was left saying nooo it can’t be over!
But alas it was until this comic came around that is.
This picks up the story from the end of the animated series.

The first thing I thought when I started reading this was, “Ahhhhhh.” It was nice to slip back into the Avatar universe, and it feels like it’s been a long time since the show came out. The graphic novel is supposed to be released in 2012. I don’t really know why it will take so long to get this out there… Anyway, The Promise, Part 1 starts off right where the show ended. I’m sorry for those of you who haven’t seen it, because this review will be filled with show spoilers. Consider yourself duly More...

For those that don't know, Avatar: The Last Airbender is a popular animated TV series about a world of element benders. The series ended three years ago and in 2012 a new spin-off series The Legend of Korra will be released. Author Gene Yang has collaborated with the two creators of the show for a trilogy of graphic novels that will be set in between Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. As a fan of the series, I was beyond excited when I heard the news for the graphic novels and w More...

This book picks up right where Avatar Season 3 left off. The war has ended and Zuko is now Firelord. He’s dedicated to restoring peace among the nations...with the help of the Avatar and his friends of course. His first step, withdrawing the Fire Kingdom settlements from the Earth Kingdom, the Harmony Restoration Movement. But trouble soon arises. Some of these colonies have been there for generations and have even intermarried and neither side wants to se More...

Well OF COURSE I WILL READ THIS. I HAVE TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS AND STUFF.

So yeah, for those of you who don't know, there are going to be these two graphic novels which basically fill in the gaps between The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra (which comes out ... who knows when, but sometime next year). So like, hopefully stuff will be explained. And yeah. I'm so tired I can't even think right now. But YAAAY I'M EXCITED. It still won't be the same as having the TV show, and I'll still More...

Without being too harsh I genuinely like these books because they are so well written. They are sometimes even better than some of the episodes because they are more tightly edited and between frames any action happening has to made the most of what's being presented. It's how graphic novels should be. Now the bad. I actually considering 3 stars for this one because it clearly is way to short for the amount of time it took to come out. However many parts it will be divided into be remains to be More...

I love The Last Airbender. I love the characters, plot, premis and world. I cannot wait for Legend of Korra to be released.

These comics seem as if they are going to fill the gap between the two series. I'm very glad for them. I wasn't ready to give up Aang yet, and there can only be another avatar after one dies.

The story takes place what seems like several months after the last battle. Familiar characters are doing things they enjoy. I found it super precious that Uncle Iroh More...

A wonderful bridge/follow up to the Avatar: the Last Airbender series, "The Promise" involves the heroes taking on a difficult task: bringing peaceful relations to the surrounding nations. But this proves a more difficult situation since Zuko isn't completely comfortable stepping into his new role as the leader of the Fire Nation, and he makes Aang promise something that isn't easy for any friend to take on. I'll admit that I somewhat saw that proposal coming, but at least it's under More...

Oh, my, gosh. Where do I begin? The plot, I guess. The book begins with a recap of the final episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender. From there, it continues on with the aftermath of peace.

What I liked
Everything. No, really.

I loved how the author managed to retain the original voices of the characters. I could hear Sokka's humor in my head, and Zuko's angst.

Avatar: The Last Airbender- The Promise, Part 1 starts actually during the finale of the show. It explains why the characters ended up in Ba Sing Se (the Earth Kingdom capital), something I, as a fan, always wondered about.

Gene Luen Yang sets up the two main problems immediately: what do to with the Fire Nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom and Zuko's request that Aang "end him" if he begins to act like Ozai. While the former More...

Allow me a moment to squeal with excitement! I adore the tv show, I mean I can literally watch the same episodes over and over with no problem. My only complaint about this book: It needed to be way longer. No, two complaints. We still don't know what happened to Ursa!!

I loved the art style, and everybody stayed really in-character. I've heard some complaints about Katara's and Aang's 'sweetie', but, when you think about their relationship, that's just the type of people they are.

I loved seeing what the characters have been up to sense the show ended, and there were some things brought up that I really hadn't tho More...

Promise, Part 1 was a delight to read. I was devastated when the TV series ended and had my misgivings about the graphic novels living up to the sheer awesomeness of the TV episodes. This book put my misgivings to rest! The art and the storyline were both fantastic. Reading The Promise, Part 1 was a wonderful return to everything I enjoyed about the TV series. This starts off almost exactly after the end of the animated series, and then skips ahead to a year later, going into the complications of a post-war world, and the burden it is on its young leaders. It effectively captures the atmosphere and tone of the show, complete with humor, action and a character driven story. The art is not anything special, its meant to resemble the show as much as possible. The show's most impressive visual moments were often fight scenes, and while that is something c More...

I am, honestly, a huge "Avatar: The Last Airbender" fan -- and this was a pitch-perfect continuation of the tale, one year after the close of the animated series. The story of what's gone on since then makes perfect sense as does the foundation for the inter-personal conflicts and the broader question of what constitutes "justice" in any post-war period. Well done, and a good (if quick) read for both adults and younger fans of the series.

I am a huge fan of the original animated series of Avatar and was crushed when it ended, as I felt that there was still much of the story left to tell. After reading The Promise Part 1 I can happily say that, yes, it is the story I've been waiting for. The comic book continuation of the series is doing the plot threads I had hoped to see on the show and judging by this first installment, it seems to be doing them very well indeed.

I have been a huge fan of the Avatar: The Last Airbender Nickelodeon cartoon series for a number of years now, so when it ended with so many of my questions still unanswered, I was miffed to say the least. I think Gene Yang does a great job nailing the characterization and this would make a great episode of Last Airbender. But I was expecting something a bit more... I dunno-- earth-shattering. The scope of the story is really not as big as I was hoping. I was also disappointed that they didn't show Aang and Katara getting together as a couple. They simply went with: 'Oh by the way-- Aang and Katara are now a couple. Moving on...' This was probably the most disappointing aspect of the story to me More...

Meh. While it's really cool to see these characters in another medium, the setup of this particular story reminds me of everything that was wrong with the Star War prequels. Way too much exposition of the political issues going on and not nearly enough visual tension... and yes, not nearly enough element bending and fight sequences. Still, I'm liking the basic arcs he's setting up, especially with Zuko and his father, so I'll be sure to check out the next two books.

I am pretty much always up for more Avatar, so getting this graphic novel was a welcome treat. This serves as a bridge (or the start of one, at any rate) between the first series and the upcoming Legend of Korra series.

My only real complaint is the length of the book, or lack thereof. The second volume doesn't come out until May, which is a frustrating wait.
