This may come as a complete shock to you guys, but I know a thing or two about urban fantasy. Not too much, mind you, but enough to recognize a good UF novel when I read one. Here’s what I can tell you: Diana Rowland is one of the best. Whenever I get my hands on her latest novel, I’m absolutely certain that I will enjoy it immensely.

Whenever I get my hands on her latest novel, I’m absolutely certain that I will enjoy it immensely.

Sins of the Demon picks up just a few weeks after the great discovery at the end of the third book. Now that she finally knows what he is, Kara would like nothing more than to try and figure out all the details concerning Ryan, but she’s too busy saving her own life and career. Someone is killing people from Kara’s past, people she had every reason to hate. There isn’t a doubt in her mind that the deaths are connected, but she doesn’t know whether the killer wants to frame her or simply do her a favor. At the same time, someone from the demon realm is trying to summon Kara (oh, the irony), but unlike the demons Kara summons, she will not get the chance for a fair bargain. If they succeed, she will be nothing more than a slave to a demonic lord, and it certainly won’t be one as lenient as Rhyzkahl.

Here’s another thing that might surprise you: I hate love triangles with a fiery passion. I usually say that there’s no such thing as a good love triangle, and it is my firm opinion that there isn’t a good reason for an author to introduce one. But you see, that’s not entirely true, and Diana Rowland made me eat my words. She managed to write a love triangle that I actually enjoy, one that isn’t too angsty, that makes perfect sense, and is, in fact, quite necessary for the story.

I’ll write just a few words about the characters because that’s really where Rowland’s strength lies. (Well, that, the awesome plots and the simple-yet-intriguing worldbuilding.) After reading this novel I can honestly say that I want to be Kara Gillian when I grow up. She is now more skilled, more confident, but still has the good sense to run in fear when she’s out of her league – which happens often when you’re in the business of summoning demons. As for Ryan and Rhyzkahl… oh, dear *fans self*. I wouldn’t mind being in a position to choose between the two at all. As for the other characters, it is clear that Rowland takes the time to build each one, even the really unimportant ones. They all come alive for me every single time.

But this also needs to be said: I absolutely despise cliffhanger endings. A fourth book of the series either has a steady audience or it doesn’t. I simply refuse to believe that a cliffhanger influences this in any way. I took one star off my rating only because of that. Otherwise, this would have been a perfect 5-star urban fantasy, and I don’t give 5 stars to UF novels all that often. In fact, Hounded by Kevin Hearne is the only one I can remember.

If you love urban fantasy or simply enjoy reading one from time to time, make sure to put this on your tbr. Each book is better than the last.

Really? That's the cover? WOW that's awful! The original art for the first two books was beautiful & then book 3 had that comic book cheese art & this just looks like a doodle by some 15 year-old emo perv kid! If I didn't know how amazing Diana's writing was (aka new to the series) that art work would have me running in the other direction! Still looking forward to the book but damn that's a cheesy cover!

Okay now that I've read the book, the cover art is the only bad thing about it! I would have given it a 5 star rating if not for the cliff hanger ending. Like so many others have said in their reviews, fourth book into a series it's unlikely that anyone reading is "new" to the series so for us rabid & loyal fans a cliff hanger is just mean! lol Though honestly I think the cliffahnger ending only really gets to me so much because it's such a damn long wait between books!

Anyway onto the actual content of the book. First of all I absolutely adore the fact that real life things, like money, no car, traffic & a broken water heater are just as likely to screw with Kara's life as demons & arcane practioners. I think that aspect of Diana's writing is what makes me enjoy her books so much, they are very relatable because at the core her characters are very much rooted in the real world, no matter if there are demons running about. I thought it was hilarious that Kara's water heater was busted & flooded her basement at the worst possible time because that's the kind of thing that happens all the time in real life.

As can always be expected from this series, for every scrap of answer we get 5 more questions raised. As much as the cliffhanger ending kills me, I do appreciate the impact it has. We the readers are left with the same feeling of shock & desperation that the characters are all in at the same moment. Especially everyone other than Kara because of the difference in time passage between the human world & the demon one. Just as we the readers have to endure a torturous year waiting for the next book, Ryan & the others are going to be freaking out for a chunk of time trying to figure out how to save Kara.

I am really looking forward to the next book because I'm sure we're going to get a huge heaping of answers since the bad guys never keep their mouths shut so you just know that evil demon lord who's collared Kara isn't gonna be able to keep from being all "Neener, neener Rhyzkahl" & reveal to Kara something that's bound to have her & our jaws hitting the floor.(less)

If things weren’t tricky enough, Kara’s latest case is the first in a series of mysterious deaths, all with one link; Kara has a bad history with each and every one of them. While the murders are rooted in the Arcane, it isn’t exactly information she can pass along to the police force. Luckily she has her friends to back her up, but will it be enough to save Kara?

As anyone who follows the series knows, the previous book, Secrets of the Demon, left us with a bit of a surprise ending. This book picks up where the last one left off and does manage to fill in a little bit more about the revelation concerning Agent Ryan.

On the subject of Agent Ryan, I’m starting to like him more and more. We’re really starting to see his character develop, especially concerning his friendship with Kara. In earlier books, when there was a situation that would frustrate him, such as Kara spending time with demon lord Rhyzkahl, his immediate course of action would be anger. While this is understandable, especially given the circumstances, I like seeing him develop to the point where he is more willing to analyze a situation or at least try to put his friendship with Kara first over his dislike for the demons she surrounds herself with.

Speaking of Rhyzkahl, I do wish we would have had more of an opportunity to see him in this novel. He appeared in an early chapter, giving answers to Kara that only left us frustrated with more questions, before showing a display of temper that cools your affection for him. If anything, it feels like Rhyzkahl is being phased out while Ryan is brought to the forefront. I’ll withhold judgment, though, until the events of the next novel since I feel that Rhyzkahl might play a big part, given the final event in Sins of the Demon.

In regards to the mystery, I love that Rowland stepped it up and had her readers guessing at two different plotlines at once. Both were intriguing, both had you pinning your thoughts on one suspect then having to switch at the last minute. And Rowland does it in a way that, even after the book is done, you wonder how much deeper all the intrigue goes that wasn’t shown.

It was wonderful to get a chance to catch up with these characters, but it’s going to be hard to wait until 2013 for the next novel in this series.

Sidenote: I really do wish they would go back to the design seen on the first two books, Mark of the Demon and Sins of the Demon. This cover really just didn’t do it for me.(less)

If I had to sum up this book in one sentence, I would have to say it's fairly good, but truly never satisfies. The writing and editing is in-line with the rest of the series, and the pace was decent enough, so what went wrong? This book felt more like a filler novel. Yes, we learn a little more about a couple of the characters, but not much more than that, other than a mystery subplot that's predictable and distracting from the main series plot. This was by far my favorite book in the series. The Author's world, and character building has progressed wonderfully since the beginning of the series.

If you liked the first three you'll like this one too - more demons (new and old!) more secrets, some answers, but way more questions. But seriously this plot is dangling by its fingernails, the ledge is crumbling and the sharks of suspense are circling below.

(blah blah plot summary blah: Peeps from the demon realm are trying to summon demon summoner Kara to the demon realm to enslave her because they are totes jealous of her new summoning contract with sexy demon lord Ryhzkhal. Also people Kara has no reason to like and every reason to dislike are ending up weirdly dead. Kara also adopts a cat, and Ryan does that thing where he is a huge crotch wad, but Kara simultaneously forgives him and calls him on it because she wants to run her fingers through his hair. Eilahn is awesome.)

Disappointments include fewer sexytimes. That's pretty much it, so I hope you weren't reading only for some inter-planar bumping of uglies - because not so much of that this time. Also, this one is sliding a little further out from the police procedural genre - although I'm not surely this is a disappointment so much. Other disappointments include that cover, which seems better suited to tentacle hentai than this book (note: do not look that up if you don't already know what it is. Or at least don't look it up at work) Thank goodness I've got it as an ebook.

The mysteries have shifted away from monster-of-the-week murders to the larger plot bunnies that have been simmering below the surface the last three books. We are now familiar enough with the characters and setting to do some good background chewing, and delve deeper into the relationships. This is the traditional point in a series where it will either descend into melodramatic badness, or the melodrama will only serve to make it more awesome. I'm putting my bet on awesome, as Rowland seems to be able to contain the impulse to add lots of angst and fluff that doesn't contribute to the story. There are some entertaining "fluff" sections for sure, but all that fluff goes I to stuffing for filling out the world. Plus she follows the most important rule of not wasting her characters- by which I mean that everything in this installment was well set up for in the previous books. I am always irritated when series drag on and authors decide to dredge up some backstory they conveniently forgot to mention in the first 4 books or so just so that they'll have a plot for the new one (I'm looking at you Jeaniene Frost Don't give me that look - you know what you did).

Surprise delights: This one was actually kind of funny. Eilahn is officially my fantasy room mate, and I kind of love every second she is on the page.

Rating : 5 stars in a fit of post cliff hanger frothing, to be later downgraded to 4 once I sit back to think that it maybe wasn't as good as some other book I gave 5 stars to, and then later shamefacedly re upgraded to 5 when I think downgrading it is weird and screw that, I really enjoyed it anyway.

This series just gets better and better even though we don't see much of Rhyzkahl, there is so much going on that he's not noticeably absent.

We learn more about Zack and Ryan, and frustratingly, information is doled out in increments leaving you wanting more. The mystery is connected to Kara's past giving us insight into the murder of her grandmother long ago.

I should take off a star for the complete lack of demon sex. The previous book had a small amount, much less than its predecessors. This book had zero. A few token mentions, but that was it. That was one of the draws that hooked me on this series. A demon lord who has no qualms about slaughtering summoners, yet Rhyzkahl, the main demon lord in this series, is drawn to Kara, his summoner, enough that they have relations. That was an interesting aspect, but it seems like Rowland is phasing it out....more

Readers who are current in the series know he isn't necessarily what he appears either, but it would take a lot for me to fall out of fictional character love with Ryan. I want him with Kara soooo bad. There was a teasing scene in "Sins of a Demon" but it doesn't amount to nearly enough.

The mystery is another winner. I found it very enthralling as usual. I also love Ryan's friend Zach and I think he is a nice addition to the series. I adore Kara and I think she is one of the
best urban fantasy/paranormal heroines around except that she keeps banging that annoying demon! I think its great that she gains a few pounds and that she likes sweets but is able to keep up with her physical duties in her career. I like how she interacts with other characters and I think she makes a believable friend which makes it darn near impossible to dislike her. Like Rowland's heroine from her other series, Angel, Kara is a flawed character. That makes them more easy to relate to I think. Another thing that worked for me (Surprisingly so) was the addition of a new roomate for Kara, the demon Eilahn. I wasn't a fan on her in the previous book but I just found her to be an enjoyable and interesting secondary characater. Now is something starts happening between her and Ryan, I will have to change my mind about her. The cat side story had me laughing out loud at times in this book. What an adorable insertion of comical mischief! I want to see more of that kitty cat!

So yes I loved this book as I did the others but things were just different with this one. I am eager to see what happens in the fifth book which releases in a couple months. Hopefully my fears about Ryan and Kara will be for naught. Hopefully that huge cliffhanger will make sense. Hopefully Rhyzkahl will be killed or will otherwise find himself incapable of ever making contact with Kara again. No? Well I can hope.(less)

Then we have portals, hidden portals around the city, all of them linked both to each other, and to the mysterious deaths. There is something big behind them – but who and what that is a long and confusing mystery.

Along the way we learn so much about Ryan, about Kara herself, about the...more People are dying around Kara Gillian again… though apparently from natural causes. Except, they all died the same improbable way, and they all have one connection – Kara. People Kara had every reason to want dead.

Then we have portals, hidden portals around the city, all of them linked both to each other, and to the mysterious deaths. There is something big behind them – but who and what that is a long and confusing mystery.

Along the way we learn so much about Ryan, about Kara herself, about the world and all with more surprises than I ever imagined to come.

All in all, I can’t summarise more of the plot without giving important things away, because it’s so subtle and so wonderfully put together. It’s also very focused with limited side plots and distractions.

I did not see so much of this book coming. I’m still kind of shocked from it. It’s rare for any kind of detective story to so completely catch me by surprise, but this one blind sided me. I didn’t even come close to imagining the bad guy was the bad guy – but nor was it ridiculously convoluted or unimaginable. More, the clues were beginning so early and they were there and I could see them – little things she did, little changes, the sort of thing you don’t realise the significance of until looking back and then you go “oooooh, I see it now!” And isn’t that a classic sign of a good detective work?

And the story and the mystery was perfect. Honestly, this was a complete “can’t put it down” moment. There’s so much to the world and the pieces are all there but they’re not coming together and I was just driven to keep reading to find out what exactly what's happening, what’s behind everything, what are all the secrets. The whole huge world is coming together and revealing more and more of itself in fascinating ways, the mystery, the demons, the plots of the demon lords – it’s fascinating and intriguing and exciting and fun. A great combination of police drama with fantastic supernatural elements

Some of the praise I have for this book is praise that I’ve said before for the series, but it needs repeating because it’s just as good in each book. We can clearly see that Diana Rowland has police experience. I don’t think there was as much class commentary in this book, but nor do I think there was the opportunity for it though we did see, yet again, a powerful official trying to abuse his position and how common and easily it is done unless the rank and file (and police chief) are furiously resistant to corruption. If anything, this book was much more personal to Kara, it was more about her than any of the other books and very much about cementing her relationships as well. Interestingly the pacing for this book was still excellent, and I say excellent because the story didn’t have a large number of side-plots to fill the gaps either. Usually any detective story has quiet moments that need filling to keep the story moving and tense – but here we had Kara’s own life and relationships to fill the gap that were more than entertaining enough to keep things moving.

There's just something compelling about Kara and the system of summoning that always leaves me waiting for more. That said, I really do not appreciate the giant cliffhanger in the end of the book. I was really looking forward to reading this book and it didn't disappoint. This series just gets better and better. I love the Urban Fantasy/Police Procedural crossover vibe that the stories have, and I do enjoy the humour in them. Kara is such a likeable heroine. She isn't one of those super tough, kill-everything-in-her-path type of UF women, and she seems far more believable because of it.

OK, W T F ??? It was a great story and loved the plots and subplots but I HATE CLIFFHANGER ENDINGS!!!!!!!!! Took a book I would have rated 5 stars and held my nose to make it 4 stars at best with the ending that sux. People from her past end up dead and that doesn’t help her career at all, she’s trying to understand what Ryan is exactly without his knowledge because if he doesn’t know what he is and almost everyone it the realm of the demons want her as a slave. I though book 3 was where this series hit its stride, and book 4 was a thoroughly enjoyable read. Kara solves a mystery, as per the earlier books, but the police work starts to take a back seat to finding out more about Kara's demon summoning powers and uncovering some new info - and new mysteries - about her friends and family. I really don't WANT to give this 5 stars because I hate cliffhanger endings and this one was exceptionally bad. But it was too good not to. What the hell was that ending!? I'm tempted to knock a star off the rating just for the freakin' cliffhanger ending. I utterly loathe cliffhangers. (Especially when the next book is not due out until the end of the year. >:( )

With that being said, this series has moved to the top of my favorite UF/PR list. It's even threatening to dethrone the Night Huntress series and take over the top spot. I love it that much.

4.5 Stars. One of the better UF series going. Excellent book, I just can't get over how much I enjoyed this story. This series is getting better by the book, and this entry really kicked the storyline into high gear. Rowland's gift for wordbuilding and storytelling has gone from really good to absolutely amazing. I couldn't read this one fast enough.

After reading all four books, I can't believe I ever wanted Ryan to be written off this books. OMG, harmatia! I love him, but I still want Rhyskahl to end up with Kara. No matter that at this point Ryan would be more suitable.
Ryan/Kara's relationship is based on friendship and loyalty. They ACTUALLY know each other, or as much as it is possible. But it has been put through so much strain that I can't really make myself care too much... (I feel I'm lying a bit by saying this, but... *sigh*) While Rhyskahl/Kara is more romantic ...?... and more lustful. They do have an undeniable connection, but it can't be as easily expressed. I think it's that mystery, that level of longing, misgivings and sexual attraction that hooks me.

It took Eilahn's presence for me to appreciate Zack. The layers of secrecy in the previous book put me off, but I never really disliked him outright. It was just annoying. :) But, Eilahn... wow, I do love her, so much she deserves a spinoff. And I can't wait for her to teach Kara some selfdefense, in both the arcane and physical combat. I hope to see her again in the next installment, and have her retake her guard/roommate position in the following book. Jill on the other hand, is, hmm, I don't know. She feels so unreal; all the witty banter and the name calling, and her fluffy girlish personality, everything over the top. She would not be my best friend. Maybe that's why I haven't warm up to her.

Super excited to see what happens to this bunch. Specially since it will take place primarily in the demon's world. How would we know what's going on with those in the human world? We didn't get to see much of Rhyskahl in this book, but I hope the next makes up for it :D :D :D

P.S.: Kehlirik is my favorite demon :D Can't wait for Kara to get home and have a movie night with the reyza.

The dream sendings she's experienced with him also had me suspecting something. That last dream sending she had pretty much made it extremely certain of it and of course, the end of this book pretty much puts it in the I-must-be-right-about-this category. No way can I be wrong about this. I'm tempted to read the teaser chapters on Rowland's website for

because no way can I leave that shit alone and wait for true clarification until the book comes out in January. Like I said, she is so mean for doing that to me.

So, we start off with someone still trying to summon Kara and Eilahn is still her demon protector. She's damned good at it, too. I found myself really liking Eilahn. She's awesome as hell.

To make matters worse, people Kara knows-and has reasons to hate-start dying in the exact same way. The way that entire case played out threw me. I didn't see that shit coming at all. I still can't believe that happened. None of it at all. I'm not going to say anything because it'd be hugely spoilerific and just implying anything could give it away, so I won't go there.

However! The bad guy did drop some info that really has me wondering about things. How does he know this is true? I didn't get the impression that a demon would tell this info to someone, so who told him? Or told someone who then told him or he discovered in a book or something? It certainly gives me pause. I don't want to have to see Rhyzkahl in a different light because of this.

Speaking of Rhyzkahl, he wasn't around much in this book, but when he was, he told Kara some things that made me really, really sure that what I suspected about her had to be true. If I'm right, I'm surprised he doesn't more vehemently oppose to her friendship with Ryan.

Speaking of Ryan, I did not want that scene that happened in the second to last chapter to happen ever. I shouldn't be surprised that it did, but I didn't want it to. He sure picked a hell of a time to find his balls, though.

Honestly, though, a good deal of things were revealed in this book, but there are still so many questions. Diana Rowland must be seriously good at keeping secrets.

I think I really will read those teaser chapters because there's no way I can deal with being left hanging like that!(less)
