I was expecting a pretty coffee table book about the design styles common to the South West style and what I got was so very much more.
The authors cover both the culture and history of the indigenous people who first developed what we now know as the South West style as well as the development and evolution of the style overall. What I appreciate most about this book is the rich breeadth of examples it includes, which helped me as a novice to really understand the terms and ideas. The authors have a lot of personal background in creating these designs. The text and photos are personal just often enough to be relatable while still staying objective. Except for elaborate directions for building a fireplace, the text doesn't matter much; there are many excellent photographic examples of such details as ceilings, fenestration, windows, doors, hardware, portales, walls, and more
