A perfectly sweet little book. I read it in less than an hour, which I love.

It has something of the romantic comedy about it, and something delightfully quirky that I have come to associate with Canadian creations - although admittedly I am mostly thinking of Scott Pilgrim here. A little off-centre, a little tongue-in-cheek, it's kind of like one perfect slice of cake: not too big, not too small, leaves you feeling all warm and gooey inside without feeling overindulged.

The little vignettes of t...more

This book is totally adorable. It's not going to change your life, it's not Earth-shattering prose, it's just plain unadulterated pleasure to read.

I wish I could've finished it in one sitting but it's difficult to finish 107 pages on the bus journey to work. But then again if I had finished it without pause I wouldn't have known what it was like to put it down and feel the need to pick it up again.

There's not much I can tell you without spoiling it BUT it is a wonderful love story AND the superh...more

This is my second book by Kaufman in the past three days. To say I’m bingeing on this guy is an understatement. Rarely do I do this. I can count the amount of authors on three fingers that had me want to read their whole back catalogue consecutively, and Kaufman is without exception one of those authors. All My Friends Are Superheroes is perfect in its eccentricity. It tells the story of Tom, and his wife, The Perfectionist. The Perfectionist can’t see Tom. He is invisible to her, and has been s...more

This is the second of Andrew Kaufman's books that I've read (Born Weird was the first), and I've since decided that I love how his brain is wired. This little one is thoughtful and interesting, while still being thin enough to slip under a door.

The structure and language is lovely in it's simplicity, and characterisation is effective because it doesn't try to bog the reader down in back-story and development. Really, it's more a series of snapshots about different relationships, past and presen...more

The Perfectionist hadn’t been with anyone since she broke up with Hypno. The sex with him had been so good the Perfectionist had taken it for granted. She really liked Tom, was sure they’d become really great friends, but nothing more. She didn’t know if their friendship would survive a one-nighter but she felt reckless and took Tom straight to her bedroom.

The Perfectionist pushed Tom onto her bed. She took off his shirt. She took off his shoes and his socks. She took off his pants. She took off

At only 108 pages long, this is one of those books that you can easily pick up and read in an hour or two and still feel like you've enjoyed and savoured it. The language is simple and pleasant, and it immediately immerses you in a world of everyday superheroes, with powers which aren't particularly enviable.

The novel focuses on Tom, a regular (a human with no superhero powers to speak of), who has gotten married to a superhero. Tom is married to a woman who is also the Perfectionist, but the p...more

A whimsical little story about an ordinary guy who is rendered invisible to his fiance, the Perfectionist (a Superhero), by her jealous ex-boyfriend, Hypno, at their wedding reception. with a premise like that, the reader is introduced to a myriad of other Superheroes, though not the kind with enviable superpowers. Some of them include the Terrycloth, who is able to make every day feel like a Sunday, Sloth, who discovers with liberating finality that saying "Fuck it" to all the things he is unab...more

What if you were normal and all your friends were superheroes? And at your wedding reception, your superhero wife’s superhero ex-boyfriend (the Hypnotist) hypnotized her into not being able to see or hear you. He went a step further: when you tried to touch her, her reactions ranged between muscle spasms all the way to stopping breathing if you tried to hold her in her sleep. How would you get her to see you? To know that you didn’t abandon her?

The situation in the novella is unlikely, but it go...more

THE STRESS BUNNY
If you arrive at a party and suddenly find yourself completely relaxed, there's a good chance the Stress Bunny is there. Blessed with the ability to absorb the stress of everyone in a five-foot radius, the Stress Bunny is invited to every party, every outing.

THE DANCER
The Dancer has direct communication with God, much like a personal phone line. The telephone she uses is her body and she dials by dancing. As such, her dancing is a very, very sensual thing.

Not sure where to start. Well, let's start from the cover: "Buy it, borrow it, steal it but just make sure you read it". Dear Mr. Scott Pack (whoever you are), if I ended up in jail for stealing this book I would be really, REALLY pissed off. I think the author wanted to be all deep and profound, trying to convey a message camouflaged under a weird story (is there a story? I just saw a collection of episodes and descriptions). Well, if there was a message, I thought it was VERY, VERY well camouf...more

It’s been a long time since I’ve sat down and read a book in one sitting. Possibly since the end of my undergraduate, where I had all the time in the world to sit in pyjamas and immerse myself into a fictional world. So to be able to curl up on a Saturday and both start and finish All My Friends Are Superheroes felt quite good. Let’s just ignore its 108-page-length.

Still, it’s definitely quality over quantity with this title. In short (ha. ha): I adored it. Funny, quirky, and as adorable as all...more

This was a book of two firsts. It is Andrew Kaufman’s debut novel, and it was also the first book that I read for a Book Club that I joined.

Anyway – at just over 100 pages long, this was a VERY quick read – definitely a little novella more than a novel. It was interesting that such a short story had the 5 of us in the group so divided. We all seemed to generally enjoy it, but that was where the similarity ended.

The story is of Tom, who is a regular guy, with no superhero powers – not unusual you...more

I keep telling myself that I have a low tolerance for quirkiness but then I find myself really liking this book, which is composed almost entirely of quirk. Set in a world where almost everyone has a super power, which range from somewhat conventional tropes as variations on invisibility to the ability to make every day seem like sunday morning, our protagonist, Tom, is the exception by having no power.

I've got to be careful to keep this review short, or else it will be longer than the book its...more

This is my second book by Andrew Kaufman, and he blew my mind once again. I just love his style of writing, I love his wit, his sarcasm, his storytelling, his characters, his plots, his bizarre twists and turns and out of this world events, I love it all.

This book was absolutely charming and tooth-achingly sweet and short. I have been looking for this book everywhere (for some reason there is a huge lack of Kaufman in our bookstores here), and I finally found it at a random book fair. I didn't k...more

This book was a sweet surprise. I picked it up by chance at a yard sale knowing nothing about it. I started it before bed and when I forgot to take it to work with me the next day, all I could think about was when I could go home to finish it. Completely charming.

EDIT: I have lent this book to three people since I've read it, and all loved it. Even those who are not prolific readers devoured it quickly and joyfully.

this was a good story. the protagonist, who is just a normal guy, know all of these people with ‘super powers’, but they’re odd super powers, like he’s dating the perfectionist, who makes everything perfect. there was a guy who’s super power was to take tension away from people, so he was always invited to parties, and my personal favourite, the spooner, who would sneak into the houses of lonely women to spoon with them. these kinds of things. so it was more of an an everyday interpretation of...more

A budding romance is put on hold when a jaded ex-lover uses his superhero powers to hypnotize his former girlfriend into believing that her husband is invisible and has in effect abandoned her. Tom, the unfortunate husband of The Perfectionist, must reverse his wife’s affliction before she uses her own superpowers to summon a new life for herself.

Not your typical superhero themed story. The narrative is light and uncomplicated, lacking an epic plot and the typical ‘good vs. evil’ struggle expec...more

Sweet is the perfect word to describe All my Friends are Superheroes. I can see why it pops up in so many reviews. Despite all the praise it has been getting from friends whose opinions on books I trust, I was wary going into it - the concept seemed like it could come off as a little gimmicky.

Tom is not a superhero, but everyone else in his life has some kind of power, including his wife, the Perfectionist. On the day of their wedding, she is hypnotized by her ex, The Hypnotist, into thinking t...more

This book was a total gem; a great find while traveling abroad. Kaufman's charm is as much an affect of the environment where I found it (Shakespeare & Co., Paris)as it is the words themselves.

The story itself is written simply; those looking for complex prose need not "waste their time". It's a quick read, with appealing metaphor extended to tell a story of love's turbulence and triumphs, and it is told in a way that "humanizes" heroes.

I recommend this book to everyone, simply because it's...more

book fair goodness! i don't understand why people say 'don't judge a book by its cover' because lately, it's all i've been doing (with real books and not humans; irrelevant).

i passed by this book 3 times admiring the gorgeous cover, the 3rd was a charm because noura said she read it and really liked it.

the only reason this gets 4 stars and not 5 is because it felt like it had so much more potential and was suddenly cut short for some reason? (even though i loved the ending). nonetheless, i enj...more

I was given this book as a gift, and I resented everyone preventing me from finishing it. I just did not want to put it down until it was finished. My heart melted, (I don't need the attendance of Ambrose the heart repairer thankfully ) I laughed, I cried, I lost a bit of wee.

My friend who gave me the book said that she guessed that I'd be categorizing my friends into super heroes. So thank you Stress Bunny, a wonderful gift for a Mistress Cleanasyougo.

So if you want to know why your perfect p...more

Não posso...more

#2 All My Friends Are Superheroes - Andrew Kaufman

I adore this book. When we moved I lost it, so I decide to purchase it again, just for the re-read. It was well worth it. This is a love story, but not like a proper love-story. It follows Tom, a normal run-of-the-mill guy who’s friends end up being superheroes. He’s in love with The Perfectionist, but after they married, he turned invisible to her. Tom has the duration of a flight to Vancouver to make her see otherwise, no pun. Will he? The best...more

This was a wonderful book. I loved it so much I went to the trouble of writing a full review on my website.

You can check it out here: What kind of superhero are you?

3 Stars may be a little generous, but overall this wasn't bad.

It's a short story about Tom, an ordinary man who marries a superhero but on their wedding day one of the brides ex's hypnotises her so she can no longer see her husband.

Its a harmless little story, but I found it a little unsatisfying. Throughout the novella there are small paragraphs about different superheores and how they found their powers. Most of the superheores aren't really superheroes at all which although amusing in a way i...more

I loved this book. Like, actually. It's amazing. Everybody should read it then buy another copy to give to someone they love. I have a feeling that writing a balanced review of this one will be difficult because it's just too awesome. It's also only 106 pages long so even if you don't like reading you can still read it. This is a love story without the schmaltz and clichés which normally send me running - I've heard this story described as 'cute' which is an adjective which I also try to avoid b...more

I thought this was a really lovely book. It is really easy to read as the language is very simple. I loved all the superhero powers because they were simply parts of their owners personality, the things that made them individual and unique. This made me think about what my own superpower would be, which was very illuminating for me. I especially loved the idea that it is only when we accept the parts of others that we don't like, or are afraid of, when we accept the person completely with all th...more

Andrew Kaufman's stories make me feel like Toronto is much more cool and hip than I previously thought. I feel like there is a whole group of people out there that I should be partying with. Kaufman is quickly becoming one of those rare writers where every single thing he writes drips with understated humour, intelligence, and an overall grasp of the subtle and delightful. I'd love to see what he would be able to bring to a graphic novel if paired with the right illustrator. The aside with Outca...more

What do I think? What do I think? Hhmmm.

'All My Friends Are Superheroes' throws up an interesting question - Are some books worth more because of what is written in the pages? This book seems to think so.

Unique idea. Some great moments - amusing, not laugh out loud. I read it in one evening (books usually take me at least a week), not because I couldn't stop reading, but because, at 100 pages, it was just too short. I didn't pay the recommended £7.99 for it (thanks, Amazon) but if I had I would...more
