WHERE NIGHTMARES WALK
This very short story works as somewhat of an introduction into the book, and lets you realize right off the bat that it will indeed be as much about nightmares as about faery tales. It’s a chilling intro that will make you fear the night.

I finally worked out what it is about Melissa Marr's writing that keeps leaving me so unsatisfied! It's bland. She has characters who range from being calm and centered to fairies whose entire psychological make-up hinges on them being emotionally volatile but they all sound the same. The writing is terrible at actually invoking emotion, Marr uses the Dark Court's ability to taste emotion as a crutch far too often. Here, take a look:
”You remember telling me you could taste emotions?” Seth asked....more

Short story anthologies aren't always my thing, but this one I loved. I have been so bummed since finishing the last Wicked Lovely book. I'm not sure what I was expecting when I picked up this book, but this wasn't it. The actual individual stories are interesting and well written. I will probably read more by Melissa Marr, simply because I like the way she writes.
However, the book as a whole lacked cohesiveness. There were several stories, many of them in a row, that were about the same characters. But not all the stories. So were these all set in the same world? What am I supposed to think about the references to the Winter Cou...more

I love to read and I read a lot. One of my favorite things is to find a new author I've never read and really fall in love with their books. Melissa Marr is one of these authors. I read the first book of her Wicked Lovely series and was hooked. This is the second book of hers I've read and I already have the rest of her Wicked Lovely series, and several others books of hers. I hope she has a long, fruitful writing career.

Between these pages lurk beings of harsh beauty and great terror. While one girl is born with Winter within her, another girl will dream the Summer into being. When one girl finds a new life in death another, girl will find a new identity in a woodland creature. And as one girl finds love can be both a blessing and a curse, another girl will learn that love can wait.

For fans of Melissa Marr (bestselling author of the Wicked Lovely series), this collection of short stories will be a delight. It includes twelve original short stories written by Melissa Marr, some themed around the world of Wicked Lovely, and some completely new to the reader.
Faery Tales & Nightmares consists of twelve short stories, however there are too many to review here, so these are some of my favourites.

The Audio:
There are two different readers for these stories, and I liked them both. Mia Barron did the majority of the reading, especially the stories told from a female point of view. She was perfect! On Twitter, Melissa Marr actually said that she picked the readers herself, and she did a fantastic job! In the book description, it says this book is "lush, seductive, and chilling" and I think Mia helped that come across. I wouldn't say she sounds like a teenage girl, which I know bothers some,...more

Once again, I have to point out that I don't feel confident providing reviews for short stories. I'm too used to novels, and the complaints I have about short stories personally feel more like whining than valid points. But I can say much about this compilation:
First off, I love Melissa Marr. I have since I read "Wicked Lovely" several years back, and while that series started to get a little convoluted with characters and their relationships among one another, her fairies have their very own gr...more

We all know how captivating Melissa Marr’s books are. So when I found out that she would be releasing a collection of short stories, I was more than eager to get my hands on it. Faery Tales & Nightmares is compiled of twelve short stories, half of which follow the characters from Marr’s Wicked Lovely series.

I hated the short story units during high school. They were weird. I think the fact that I enjoy well written short stories so much today is a testament that I have, indeed, grown up as a reader. Reiteration - well written short stories.
Marr accomplishes well written short stories. She lost me on the first one that was only a couple of pages long but the rest were entirely enjoyable, if not slightly disturbing. I think that was part of the allure for me. I really did love the selchie story best,...more

A collection of short stories, some set in the Wicked Lovely world and others just stand alone contributions.
Where Nightmare's Walk: A very short and pointless story, only a few paragraphs long.
Winter's Kiss: A story about a girl with ice/wintery powers leaving her summery home and meeting an ice bear/boy and searching for a home where she fits in better. This was one of the better stand alone stories, it was predictable but it was still enjoyable. The romance was subtle but sweet.

Deliciously dark, enchanting and hauntingly sinister this collection of fairytales merged with folklore is simply stunning.
I would highly recommend this book for readers who have read Melissa Marr’s ‘The Wicked Lovely’ series (a compilation of five books), as many favorite characters within the series is included in these stories. I wasn't impressed at all by this book. When I discovered that it was a book of short stories I was really optimistic because short-story books can be really fun with the constant changing and movement between characters and storylines.
However... this book contained stories that were neither entertaining nor well written. Many of them were not even developed enough to be considered stories. I had to ask myself more than once "What was the point of that?" after reading one of the shorts.

Melissa’s Marr’s writing is one of the main reasons I decided to read this book. I always love the way she builds the world in her books. So vivid, enchanting, and beautiful. Even though the story is too dark for my taste, her way of creating details in her story never fails to enchant me. There are twelve dark yet beautiful short stories in this book.

It was an interesting book to say the least.
It might have been a better idea to read the main "Wicked Lovely" Series First, but I think that diving into it now, after getting the small taste will help me make a bunch of connections and get more knowledge faster.
Where Nightmares Walk:
I thought that it was generally nice scary story. It was short and to the point, very fair.
The idea of Nightmares as being an actual creature was a very appealing idea for me.

2.5 stars- This book is made up of short stories. Some are new characters and some are set in the Wicked Lovely world.
Characters from Wicked Lovely: Mostly all make an appearance, but most of the stories are about Niall, Irial and Leslie. Which happened to be my least favorite characters.
The stories that I found the best were the ones not set in the WL world. They had more substance to them. Have you ever read a great book that ended on a good note, then the author throws in an epilogue that rui...more

Melissa Marr's Faery Tales and Nightmares was quite the read! Filled with short stories I decided to break the review into short segments about each tale.
WHERE NIGHTMARES WALK
This one was a little odd, it was only 2 pages long. Yet the little bit of story we had was interesting. A character is running for their life. And there's a sense of danger, but not much else in known.
Rating 3/5 stars

This is a short story collection that Melissa Marr has written. The tales are well told and the reader is entralled to the very last sentance. It was pleasantly surprising to see short stories about her Wicked Lovely characters. I was a huge fan of this series and always wondered what happened to all my favourite characters. Well, there was no more wondering about Leslie, Irial and Niall. Seeing Seth in his new role was wonderful to read. And let us not forget about the ex-Summer King!

I actually finished this book a while ago and am just getting to this review.
I've been so busy. Not that anyone really reads my reviews but here goes...
I quite liked the independent stories that Melissa Marr wrote. And when I say independent I mean not linking to her other series - the wicked lovely series.
The stories she came up with we're rather interesting and unique and very readable.

I'm a sucker for anything Melissa Marr does -- she's one of my few buy-on-sight authors. I enjoyed her Wicked Lovely series, and Graveminder was one of my favorite reads from last year. I've been itching to read this ever since I first heard of it, and with enough luck, I won a signed, personalized copy. Needless to say, I'm really happy this happened.

This one has left me conflicted.
I think regarding this book as a collection of short stories is being generous with labels.
Let me begin by saying, I love Marr's Faery world. When an author invests so much heart and soul into her creations they sing, and that is exactly what Marr's Faery Court series does. It lingers with you, it never leaves. The saving grace of Faery Tales and Nightmares is that the bulk of the book is made of stories about the Faery Court. She revisits our favourite characte...more

FAERY TALES & NIGHTMARES is a fabulous collection of twelve new and old stories by Melissa Marr. These dozen stories come together to create a masterpiece of an anthology that will make readers smile and blush one moment and send shivers down spines the next. And, just look at that cover...it is gorgeous! For fans of Wicked Lovely series there are plenty of treats, but what I found more appealing were the stories that were apart from that bestselling world. A few stand outs were the chilling...more

Marr's faery stories are Twilight-y in their characterizations and plotting. Not a lot happens, the faeries gaze adoringly at each other, and there is a lot of vague emotional talk without any real discoveries. And if you are not a reader of the Wicked Lovely books, they are not especially interesting and frequently confusing. Being familiar with the Wicked Lovely world is probably a requirement to enjoying these stories.
This collection is heavy on the faery stories, unfortunately for my taste...more
Who doesn’t love Melissa Marr’s amazing Wicked Lovely series? There’s always love and hate, seduction and violence, good and evil in each of her books; all facets of life while involving the supernatural! The same can be said of her collection of short stories, Faery Tales & Nightmares.

I read half of these stories after receiving my advance reader's copy, and I thought they were fun. The second half of the book is mostly stories about characters from Marr's Wicked Lovely series of which I have only read the first book, so I felt like I was missing the point while trying to read them. Needless to say I put the rest of the book away until I eventually read through all of the Wicked Lovely books.

I loved this, a couple of the stories were pretty surreal but surreal in a good way and a couple were previously released novella's, however there was also a couple of new stories set in the Wicked Lovely Series, one of those was set before the final showdown in the series, another one I wasn't sure if it was set before after or during the final showdown as it was set in Faery with the wall between the worlds closed but I liked it as we seen some kind of closure and the start of something good f...more
Melissa Marr is the modern day female version of Hans Christian Anderson. I loved her short story "Love Struck" the most in this collection of short storys. I loved the concept of "Selchies" and how he brought the girl in the story a Moccachino and a plate on top of it filled with yummy treats to sample. What a man/selchie!! Who cares if he's a Selchie i say!!

I'm going to go ahead and rate this purely on the non-Wicked Lovely stories as it's been forever since I've read any of those.
The remaining stories ran from meh to wonderful, in my opinion. I'm not ashamed to admit that Winter's Kiss, Love Struck, and The Sleeping Girl and the Summer King made me tear up a bit. Those two gave a mature and heart tugging look at love and the choices we make. Flesh for comfort left me a bit disturbed, but I definitely think that was the intention.
