In a meeting I started to notice that while some people talk about their past or current difficult experiences they cry openly, or raise their voices in anger or frustration, and others don't. I assumed those that didn't express negative emotions had been in the program so long and had worked very hard to achieve this apparent perpetual state of acceptance, and I couldn't wait to get there. Dr. Mathieu identifies and describes the defenses preventing healthy emotional and spiritual practices. Although the title alludes that this book would apply to those in recovery with its abundant use of the word "sobriety," this book really applies to anyone who is seeking interpersonal growth, especially if they are processing an illness, disability or personal loss.
