I feel like I should say, SCORE! I read 3 books in a row (or actually sort of at the same time) this week that I'm rating a 5. How often does that happen?
This is the second in the Beyond the Frontier books by Jack Campbell (of course I guess you could call it the 7th in the Lost Fleet series, but the Fleet has been back to Alliance Space so....well anyway). WithCaptain errr I mean Admiral John "Black Jack" (don't call me Black Jack) Geary we're again...or possibly still out at the edge of (and More...

I grabbed Invincible after finishing Dreadnaught, which ended in a cliffhanger. What would happen with the Alliance fleet facing a huge enemy presence far from home, arriving in front of a fortress that rivaled the size of a small moon.
This book was enjoyable, as it continues the journey of Black Jack Geary, this time taking the fleet to explore the limits of the alien territory. After proving that the fleet can match the Enigma race's capabilities, this book starts the journey home for the flee More...

I drop everything as soon as the next book in this series comes out. I buy it the day it hits the shelves. Like others have said, I too slow my reading of this series of books to enjoy every part of them. Instead of my usual 1-2 days to read a book I try to stretch this to a week so I can extend my enjoyment. Every book in the series is great and by the time you get this far, you feel like you know the characters personally and are actually there, experiencing what they are going through. I love More...

Jack Campbell's "Lost Fleet" series started out as the literary equivalent of a summer popcorn movie, fun, cool, and chocked full of special effects. The characters were somewhat dull and flat, and the story formulaic, but fun anyways. I picked up the first three one after another and eagerly awaited future volumes. Somewhere along the line, and especially since the "lost fleet" has gone "Beyond the Frontier", things have started to change. Slowly Campbell has started to flesh out his characters More...

I have been a fan of Jack Campbell/John Hemry since his earlier series' (I keep hoping we'll see more JAG in space). However, the Lost Fleet is easily his masterpiece. I enjoy space naval war science fiction many of which transpose either Hornblower or Aubry type characters into space wars. However, in many of those novels, the characters become more and more unbelievably perfect as the series goes on. This is not the case in the Lost Fleet novels - an irony since the protagonist is seen in Camp More...

I love the series. I always find myself coming back to it every so often. I thought the series was loosing its edge in Dreadnaught (7th book. Fact there was thirty seconds I was worried that Geary will be arrested upon his return by the 2nd fleet under Admiral Numos but then I realized even with new ships Numos would last in a straight up fight with Geary)but Invincible more than makes up for it.

I love military SF. The series of books by Jack Campbell that detail the adventures of now Admiral Jack Geary are like crack to me. Well written and carefully planned out, they show the breadth and depth of military operations as well as the human side of the force. The author doesn't cheat to make sure that battles are too easy, and every victory comes with a price.

Invincible, book 8 in the Lost Fleet series, and book 2 of the Beyond the Frontier story continues with the Alliance Fleet exploring unknown space with unknown alien species.
It has been several months since I'd finished a book, I'd attempted to read Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy but couldn't get into it, perhaps not being in the right frame of mind. Then this arrives in the post, from Amazon, having pre-ordered it months ago.

Its been ages since I've read the last book in this series, but when I saw this was out I had to get it. Though its been awhile since I read this series, but once I started I couldnt but the book down! Jack Campbell is brilliant at writing this series and this continues perfectly from where Dreadnaught left off.

Continuing the Lost Fleet: Beyond the Frontier series ...
This book maintains a similar structure to the others -- background threats slowly growing in both perception and menace, while immediate tactical problems have to be solved by Geary and his fleet.
This volume seemed to expand the formula a bit, not only adding some depth to some of the characters, but both increasing the complexity of the universe *and* throwing in some interesting political issues.

Like just about every other book in the series, I almost couldn't put the book down. The pacing is fast, the characters engaging, and I absolutely love the way Campbell chooses to present the narrative as seen through the eyes of just John "Blackjack" Geary.
Aside from all of that, this book is notable for being the first book in the series that I felt like Geary was fully in control and acting rather than being forced to react. The introduction of new alien species was well handled and about as More...

Eighth books in series are never this good. But this one was! Much action and adventure as always. Hemry is also getting adept at characterization. Instead of action figures, the characters appear as real people in three dimensions. Great character development to go along with the action. Several tug-at-your-heartstrings moments. And as always, several unforseen plot twists and turns. This book also is a great first contact story. Hemry creates some very intriguing aliens. I can't wait to learn More...

I think this is the last book (so far?!) in this series of Lost Fleet books. I really like them; hope he comes out with another few soon. The narrator is pretty good; I think I enjoy this book more as an audiobook than I would reading it, but not by much. The only strange thing is that between the previous book and this one, the narrator changed his pronunciation of one character's name and changed the accent of two other characters. It was a little disconcerting. I wonder why he did it? He's be More...

The second book in 'The Lost Fleet: Beyond the Frontier' spin-off from 'The Lost Fleet' series, with most of the same characters (so, in a way, the 7th book in the series).
Whereas the previous book primarily concerned the outbound portion of their mission (to investigate the extent of enigma - aliens discovered in the 'original' series - space), in this the fleet starts its journey home with the novel picking up almost directly from the end of that previous story.
They also don't (yet) make it More...

Not just another good entry into the "Lost Fleet" series, but also a thoughtful exercise in examining our anthropocentric biases, both towards those different from us as well as each other. This one explores different intelligent species, our academic expectations vs. reality, and how revolutions can start and be successful (hint: they don't succeed in a vacuum - forgive the space pun - but rather rely on diplomacy to provide leverage against the outside forces that want to stomp it before it ca More...

it was good, but i cant stand it when the story doesn’t resolve itself and is left wide open for debate when such an obvious conclusion can be made. the author needs to write one more book in this series which resolves the differences between alliance and syndic forces. whats another 100 years in terms of war? (the legendary geary name would live on) the answer is nothing, considering that humans have always been at war. conflict resolution and new friends/allies with the spider wolfs could resu More...

Really enjoyed this episode after it added some new elements to the mix of the familiar, notably items known as Kicks and Bubs. You'd have to read it really! Those aside it again sticks to the same core formula and structure while the new elements keep things interesting.
Having read through the entire series (to this point, 8 books in-all including this one) in under 4 months I must like something about the format that I'm not really complaining. Well, apart from the number of repeated descripti More...

Not the strongest book in the series. The action was fast paced and interesting as always but I felt myself struggling to remember all the different subplots and intrigues that were going on. My main problem with this book had to do with suspension of disbelief though (here be spoilers) as at one point in the middle of the book I was just taken completely out of the story by something that I felt had no place there. The new alien species encountered by the Alliance Fleet is described as incredib More...

I thoroughly enjoyed this. A lot happened, so the space battles were pared down, which I am completely ok with.
Several alien races, some good, some bad. And LOTS of politic'ing. Ends up with the fleet heading back to home with the spectre of old rivals perhaps in charge.
If I was Geary, I'd get my fleet ready, and just take over. And that is why I really like this series. Geary has a moral compass, and he sticks to it. Even when it is to his, and others[!!], disadvantage.
It is kind of odd knowing More...

This is another book in the Black Jack series. It won't stand alone, so unless you're already up to date on these books, don't bother. If you are keeping up with them, and enjoyed the last one, this one continues where it left off. The writing is as good as ever, and the characters are the same. I'm starting to feel kind of trapped in an endless saga, though. But that doesn't mean I can bring myself to stop reading. Be warned, once again, this book has no real ending. Just an opening for the nex More...

A new Jack Campbell book is a drop everything and read, or in my case listen, affair. I have never been less than satisfied with any of the Lost Fleet novels and the most recent book Invincible is no different. For those who haven’t read the previous Lost Fleet series I highly highly recommend you go do so; particularly if you’re a fan of military science fiction. If you’ve read the previous series but haven’t jumped on board for Beyond the Frontier well…something is probably wrong with you and More...

Another Lost Fleet book by Jack Campbell? Oh, go on then!
I think it's fair to say that I'm a fan of The Lost Fleet series of novels, and whenever a new volume is announced it's swiftly added to my wish list. Invincible is the second in the Beyond the Frontier saga, following on from the initial six book series, and picking up events immediately after the ending of Dreadnaught, and manages to add much more to the setting than I initially thought it would do.

The Lost Fleet universe really expands in this book. With the first six books taking place between Human settled worlds and Human factions and only hints of alien inhabitants, Campbell really makes good on it here, as we explore regions beyond Syndicate space and discover just what else is out there. Unfortunately (or fortunately if you're a fan of this) the story still has a linear feel due to the sole viewpoint, and an obvious military theme to it all, as we remain with Admiral Geary aboard h More...

I had waited a long time for this book to come out having fairly high expectations. Now, having read it, I am not sure the wait was actually worth it. Maybe this book series have gone on too long. It’s like to author doesn’t really have any new ideas and to “develop” the story he just bogs it down more and more in (bad) politics, deceit and backstabbing a ’la cheap soap opera.
I don’t really like the ships breaking down all the time. It is just irritating. The main plot of “go investigate the ali More...

Also interesting. I didn't quite get into this one as much as the previous book, but the plot threads progressed quite satisfactorily. It is very clean and reinforces good values (sometimes that's a quality that compromises the whole story of other great books for me).
One of the main themes is the encounter and relationship of humanity with new species of intelligent alien life. It makes you think, but isn't earth-shatteringly thought provoking. Enjoyable none the less.

Yawn. Wake me when its over. Like the new aliens. Black Jack is starting to wear me out. The battle scenes are stale. Ships are lost like polker chips and since you have no connection to them you don't care. If there is a question or problem that pops up, there is always a salty, old chief with an answer or a young engineer with a new viewpoint. Diologue is getting uninspired and hackneyed. Save yourself, grab a lifepod and bail out before this series sucks your brain dead.

It's a rare SF series that can get up to this many books and still be interesting. (I don't count the six books in "Lost Fleet: Still Within The Frontier" (not really called that) to be in a different series.)
We have different kinds of interesting aliens, that engage in unexpected ways. And the humans are still human and intriguing. Also, it manages an ending that doesn't depress me - after that run of books last year, I'm pretty psyched about this.

thoroughly enjoyed this. The introduction of the alien races and their differentiation is very good. I really hope that the series continues expanding the mix of four different races, , and the political evolution. The unique universe that has been created is becoming like an early Star trek. so far while the aliens are largely mysterious they're beginning to take shape and become players in unfolding saga.

I blew through this series and the original 'Lost Fleet' series in a few weeks. The books were quite good and hard to put down.
The only down side is that, after reading these books and their more accurate depiction of space battles (i.e., the distance and time-lag involved with speed-of-light communication), it's going to be harder to enjoy the "Star Trek" and "Star War" type of stories!
