There’s a breathless, unpolished feel to the writing in Larissa Hinton’s short stories and poems, as if the author couldn’t wait to release the words. The mix of poetry and story is nicely laid out, following a blossom from bud to flower to seed, and following characters and places with introductions to the author’s novels.

There’s a land of wishful thinking where “bam, like Disney said it would happen, it really happened” characterizes the results of idle thought. And there’s a school for charac...more

This was a fresh and fun poetry and short story anthology that I had the treat to read and review. It is set up in three stages: Seed, Bud, and Blossom. These stages coincide not only with flowers but with our own lives, and Ms. Hinton does a nice job of letting us see this as soon as the collection starts.
In many anthologies like this one, the main issue is that there is no interconnecting plot weaving through it; no pattern that makes us feel like we are reading an actual book. This one, howev...more

Everblossom is a story anthology that has three parts representing the three stages of life of a flower. Throughout the book you see development of the author’s writing as well as some of the characters in previous short stories.
Every now and again I enjoy poetry so I was thrilled to be getting some poetry sprinkled in with the short stories. I really liked all the poems as they were nicely written.
Then there were the short stories. Each one was incredibly unique and they were very short so only...more

Everblossom: A Short Story and Poem Anthology by Larissa Hinton is a captivating series of literary works that take you through the life cycle of the flower of life. The collection is separated into three parts of the cycle: Seed, Bud and Blossom. It also shows the progression and fine-tuning of Hinton’s writing craft.

Seed shares Hinton’s early poetry and short stories. The first poem, Seed to Seed to Seed, is a poem that shows how the rest of the collection proceeds. It is a poem that describes...more

I adore short stories. I enjoy a story that leaves me wanting more and has me thinking what could happen next once that final word is read. "Everblossom" is one of those books that will leave you writing the next lines so you can find out what will happen next.

"Everblossom" is split into three sections, - Seed, Bud, Blossom- and while I'm sure some people will find the too short stories a bit frustrating but I find them very interesting. The author has a way of sucking us into a situation withou...more

Everblossom is a short anthology of stories and poetry that represent different stages of a flower (seed, bud, blossom). The stories and poems are dark, light, realistic, fantasy, heartbreaking, disturbing and everything in between.

The stories are very diverse and I enjoyed them, though there were several typos throughout the book. I enjoyed the writing style and felt it was very clear. I have to say I enjoyed the poetry more than the stories, however. I...more

Everblossom by Larissa Hinton, is a short story and poetry anthology (collection of works). Some such stories are sad, some are magical, while others cause intrigue. But the main theme I noticed was life stages.
Expressions of life through poetry and stories that express troubles some of us may have experienced throughout our life. The scenarios written within range from being bullied at school, losing a child, and the need to cope with being something not quite normal.

This book is an anthology of poetry and short stories organized around the theme of the life cycle of the flower (bud, blossom, and seed). It has strong elements of fantasy and the paranormal and also some elements of romance. There are also appearances of characters from the authors’ other books (some of which are published already and some which aren’t).
The first thing that should be noted about this book is that in addition to the themes mentioned above, there seems to be a strong overtone of...more

Everblossom is definitely not a book that I would pick up and start reading if I saw it in a book store. It's not because the premise is bad (I don't think you can go bad with poems and short stories), but because poems and short stories aren't usually books that drag me in, unless they are a cohesive collection that ebbs and flows from one to the next.

Overall, reading Everblossom was an interesting experience, and I did enjoy each poem and short story on its own, but I really didn't see this as...more

I adored this anthology; it has everything I want in a story. Gripping storylines, memorable characters, convincing romance and beautiful writing. I didn't know this collection of poetry and stories would be so good - but I hope my review convinces you to read it so you don't hesitate like I did!

Every one of the stories had the potential to be turned into a proper book - every single one of them. When it finished, I wanted more! I was genuinely upset when the whole collection ended and the bar a...more

When Larissa Hinton first emailed asking me to review Everblossom the description intrigued me immediately. I was really fond of the supernatural elements of many of the short stories and the vignette-esque style they were written in. The brevity of the passages makes it an extremely quick read.

The deliberate arrangements of the words of the poems were compelling as well. Whenever I read free verse, seeing the way the words are spread out on the page and the rhythm their position evokes can be a...more

Unique. If I had to describe this anthology in one word, I'd say unique. I have never read an anthology before, so this was a nice change from the norm.

Although some poems and short stories were a bit hard to follow, they ended up making sense. The anthology was broken up into three sections (the three stages of a flower) and I found that all the writing following each topic fit perfectly! :D

My two favorites were definitely Crack and A Good Girl.

Everblossom by Larissa Hinton is a collection of short stories and poems, all of which circle around one central theme. It is split up into three separate sections which meander through the life-cycle of a flower 'from bud to blossom and then back to seed', a lovely idea for a collection. It includes some of Hinton’s early work and does therefore not just deal with the growth and fruition of a flower, but with the evolution of the writer herself. 'The beginning of the end' is also a continuing r...more

Everblossom is an anthology going through three life stages. Everblossom starts off with a heavy claim in its blurb that it is ”An anthology that will quench your thirst for more than the ordinary.” Naturally, this is a very difficult claim to follow up on, and unfortunately I don’t think this anthology delivered. In fact, it did the opposite with many of the stories and poems being good because they were so ordinary and slice-of-life like. Hinton’s strength was the honesty in which she delivere...more

I normally avoid posting bad reviews, but in this case, the author who requested the review requested that I post the review despite my hard feelings. I had many high hopes for this book after reading the synopsis, and I felt I was completely let down. I would like to point out though that, although I did not like this book, I did read many good reviews which lead me to believe this book just wasn't for me.

Everblossom was told through a series of poems and short stories relating to the growth of...more

Larissa was kind enough to ask me to review her newest e-book, Everblossom: A Short Story and Poetry Anthology. Everblossom is a short collection with alternating stories and poems, and can easily be read in one sitting. The entries are grouped in three sections, “Seed,” “Bud” and “Blossom,” and like a flower, are meant to reflect the stages of growth.

Although I don’t normally read and review poetry, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed the poems in this anthology. Several were stan...more

Everblossom is an anthology unlike any I have ever read before. First of all it seemed strange to read something that was so casual in its style. I almost felt as if I was at an oral story telling. This is not bad, just different. Her mixture of short stories and poetry was refreshing. I loved the poem “Childhood”. As I find myself getting older it was nice to read a poem that took me back to what it was like to be a child.

Just about the time I thought I had the author’s style pinned down she sl...more

When I first received this electronic book, I was very intrigued upon reading it.

Everblossom is an anthology that goes through life in three stages. Bud, blossom and seed.

The title and description was very alluring to me. I have never been really fond of poetry and thought that this would be a very good opportunity to start. I was surprised to enjoy Larissa's poetry, she knows how to play with words.

As for the short stories, I was found to be left on my appetite most of the time.

Everblossom provides an interesting mix of writing. All of the pieces are very short, making this an easy-to-pick-up/easy-to-put-down read. I got through it in two sittings and enjoyed both. Hinton writes well, conveying ideas and emotions very effectively in just a few words.

I find poetry to be a very difficult review. It can mean so much to so many people, or it can mean nothing at all. All I can say is that I identified with Hinton’s work. Not all of it but much of it and certainly enough to...more

Everblossom is a collection of shorts stories interspersed with poems. And when I say short stories- I mean short! I blew through this collection very quickly.

At the beginning of the anthology there is a note from the author that in part mentions this collection is both light and dark and that some of the works will make you wince. Everything the author states in her introduction was true. I definitely noticed the elements of light and dark in the collection and as it went on it became darker.

Overall, this anthology was an enjoyable read. I especially enjoyed reading the poetry. I love reading and writing poetry so I'm always looking for "new" poetry to read. All the poems were pretty good but I absolutely loved In Death You Speak. Just the kind of poetry I look for!

On the other hand, the short stories were okay. I'll admit I skimmed through some that I found a bit dull. However, I did enjoy Forget, Changes, Forget-Me-Nots, and Transcend. I got through the entire anthology in about 2...more

An interesting mix of poetry and short stories, some continuing in more short stories. I liked the book and plan on doing a review on my blog soon.

I enjoy short stories from time to time and this is a good grouping of stories that will have you thinking. Not horror, but psychological in nature. Did they really happen or only in the heads of the characters? I liked reading one and than going off and doing something else and returning to read another.

If you enjoy short stories you will like this...more

First thoughts:
This anthology is different. At some points it's a little bit macabre and makes you wince, at some points it's sad and then again it makes you smile. I'm not entirely sure what I expected from this, but I was definitely surprised. If you're looking for a short book to distract you from heavier reads, you should pick this up.

I throughly enjoyed reading Everblossom. I am not a poetry expert, but the language and beauty of of the writing drew me in and left me wanting more. I found the format to be unique and well thought out. The short stories made me think and the poems were beautifully written. I read a lot of books that I enjoy and then don't really think about again. This is not one of those books for me. I will remember some stories in this book for years and I know they will influence me to be better. It's a qu...more

I am admittedly not a person who typically reads poetry…..but I took a chance with this anthology and I am very glad I did. I loved it!!! It’s about life…..I laughed, cried, cringed and even thought “hmph.”

The poetry was wonderful and the short stories too short. I wanted more. Larissa Hinton is an extremely talented writer. She is definitely not limited to any specific genre. I look forward to reading her future works!!! She is on my list of authors to follow!!!!!!

My Thoughts:

Being the fan of poetry I am, I had to at least take a look at this anthology. It has an out of the ordinary approach (poetry to short story back to poetry) that can easily throw one off. Particularly the beginning might make the reader question what the author is getting at considering how simple the writing appears. When the story progresses, however, the childishness of the start makes perfect sense. This is a story...more

This short Anthology was good, but left me wanting a whole lot more. I'm not a big poetry reader, but I enjoyed the poems in this. The poetry is fairly easy to read.
As for the short stories, they are all very intriguing, with convincing storylines and memorable characters, sadly they are called short stories for a reason and left me wishing there was more.
The endings are truly left to your imagination.
Overall a good anthology to read.

I liked the way in which the author chose to combine poems with short stories. Some of the stories had dark undertones, but since that is right up my alley, it suited me just fine. I believe that many of these stories could easily go on to be novels on their own, and I hope to read more from the author in the very near future.
