I could hardly catch my breath for there was non-stop action. The author creates a fitting atmosphere for funny characters and a gripping story. ( Harold should have been a main character ^^ ) I had fun reading it and if you like fantasy you will like it too. As I said, I am not used to magic and wizard based books (yes, I still haven't read HP yet!), that's why I rated it three and not higher. I wish there wouldn't be a cliffhanger in it.
I won this book as an ebook from Richard Denney's blog contest.
Rowan is a 13 year old boy living with his grandfather, who happens to be a Caller, someone who calls the dead. Right off the bat, a girl his age shows up on his doorstep, begging for protection from two evil people who want to kidnap her for her powers. She's an Immortalist, the last of her kind, a person who lives a hundred years longer than a regular human. But if someone were to kill an Immortalist and drink her blood, they woul...more

Wow, let me begin by saying that it takes quite a bit to get me interested in the story of a new set of characters and creatures, but this book did it! I love the concept of what an Immortalist is and I love the magical world that it is set in. Stitches is my favorite minor role character because he seems like he could come in handy being so small, and the main characters are all too amazing to choose just one. This book has it all really, it's fast paced, adventurous, creepy at parts, and I lov...more
FOR FANS OF HARRY POTTER AND PERCY JACKSON!!
it's about time we are introduced to a strong young male lead
that resembles harry potter and the great percy jackson. No this is not
in any way like the books I mentioned above. it's unique all on it's own.

*3.5/5 Stars - A nice final book to end 2011!
I haven't read middle grade for well over a year now I guess. Around the time I finished The Hunger Games Trilogy (before I even knew it was a popular series, let alone part of this enormous book community!), I find myself unable to immerse myself back in the middle grade genre. Becuase of how serious The Hunger Games was, I wanted something darker, something that was truly fantastic that could blow my mind away - so I eventually moved on to young adu...more

Wow! This short book blew my mind away. It was unique, addicting and the end was fantastic. Rowan was definitely a lovable character.
I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a great middle grade fantasy book to crave your inner Harry potter. :)
Cant wait for book two!

“I think you’ve forgotten that this place holds a lot more than just
betraying Hobgoblins. Call upon the spirits, summon fairies, raise the
dead! My brother, you have the power to do so--now get off of your butt
