Not a good story at all - Really didn't enjoy it.

The prologue of repressed former lives was completely irrelevant.

Felt like a children's book apart from the sex and descriptions of erections. Really simplistic language and kind of felt like Dorling Kindersly book on life in a Roman century.

Author hadn't grasped the concept of 'show, don't tell'.

Hint of religious story starting, but I'm not planning on reading the sequel to find out.

A great adventure set in Roman Germany, the story sees the centurion Graecus adopting a ragtag slave as his son and follows their everyday life as well as the moments of tension arising not just from the unruly natives, but more sinisterly by the machinations of the Roman political machine. A fine page turning debut, I can’t wait for the rest of the series…

This is a story of an introspective main character. It is light on action, and there's no real mystery or suspense, but, as the reader, I felt compelled to read on. The second half of the book flew by. I did like getting a glimpse into the life of a Roman centurion in the time of Nero. It was not the book I expected, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Lovely little book. I enjoyed the story about how a Roman centurian discovered the meaning on love when he took in an orphaned child.

Historical fiction. Interesting premise, and I did finish it, but the storytelling was lackluster at best.

A wonderful story told in spare and beautiful language. I can't wait to find out what happens next to the characters in the rest of the trilogy.

Judith Gordon never thought of herself as being a creative person - as a barrister working in big companies travelling the world, she felt that creativity was for wimps. Twenty years on and three books later, she now thinks differently: 'I didn't know how fulfilling writing would be', she says, 'Nor how difficult. I mean, it can be really heartbreaking to have to find the words for some of the ...more
