Noah Zarc (Mammoth Trouble) by D. Robert Pease is a rollicking space adventure that jumps through time with the Zarc family as they try to save animals (yes, two by two) from Earth's past to repopulate a planet barren of animal life. Noah Jr. is busy getting in trouble for unscheduled tests of his thermsuit when his parents fail to return from a mission to the Ice Age. Noah and his brainy brother and teenage sister jump through time and space to try to rescue their parents only to find that Hoan...more
Noah Zarc (Mammoth Trouble) by D. Robert Please is a truly exuberant novel about a twelve year old boy's adventures in a post-apocalyptic world. Noah, along with his family, is on a mission (known as Animal Rescue Cruiser Project) to save the animals from the Earth's past - which is headed towards destruction - and bring them to the future to re-populate the Earth of Noah's time.

PS - I love the new cover so much more than the old one.

Noah Zarc is a 12-year-old time-traveling pilot who helps collect two of each species of animal for the future earth, along with his family. The title and character name are not in the least a subtle tribute to the Noah's Ark story, which is essentially what this story is loosely founded on. While I appreciate the pun, I do wish it had been more subtle only because...more

I'll start off by saying that this book was totally entertaining! I read most of it in just one sitting. I loved Noah Zarc. He was so adventurous and daring, which I was not expecting from a paraplegic boy. He was full of determination and courage as he raced through time and space to save his parents. I also really enjoyed the fact that he and his siblings (brother and sister) acted exactly as siblings should! They weren't all lovey dovey and unrealistically nice to each other. They argued, rol...more

Personally, I LOVED this story. A fantastic adventure. 12 year old paraplegic Noah Zarc lives in both the future and the past. Being a lover of physics and cosmology, this was fascinating to me. Also fascinating was the way Noah didn't allow his handicap to hold him back. Handicap? No Way!! Noah had a really cool mag chair to help him zip around.

I really enjoyed this book. It had many themes: time travel, how we define disability, the environment, extinction, family, friendship, our relationship with nature and animals, and choice.
I thought it was interesting that the hero was a paraplegic. We are told: “I was born without the use of both of my legs. The only time I feel free is when I’m piloting a ship.” Our hero finds himself frustrated by his own body, which limits him, but he appears to be a born pilot. Through this he finds confide...more

I wasn't sure what to expect with this one. I was afraid the book would make fun of the Bible and the true account of Noah's Arc. While this book did mention the original Noah, it was respectful and just referred to the story as a historical tale.
The main character, Noah Zarc, Jr., is a 12-year-old troublemaker and paraplegic. He's stubborn and has a big heart for any creature in danger. I loved him.

One thousand plus years into the future of our solar system, Earth has been destroyed. People now live on Mars and Venus, fly around in the coolest space ships, and utilize amazing technology (like holopads, personal flying thermsuits, chef-bots that speak with French accents, and neuro implants). They’ve even perfected time travel. But, unfortunately, all animal life has been destroyed in the great Cataclysm.

Noah Zarc and his family are travelling through time collecting animals from Earth - while the animals are still around to collect. In Noah's own time, the Earth has been uninhabitable and all animals extinct for almost 1,000 years. There is a bit of "Take care of the Earth before it's too late", but it's part of the story, and not preachy. (I think that's common sense myself, but obviously not everyone feels that way.) Unfortunately, not everyone agrees with the project, and Noah's entire famil...more
I'm probably too old and cynical to enjoy this book properly. It's well-written and imaginative, and kept me turning the pages, but I was able to guess most of the twists in advance.
Noah, the main character, is something of a Mary-Sue, in that he frequently disobeys his parents and older siblings, often putting his life in danger, but gets away with no more than a stern talking-to.
The plot has a few implausibilities, such as Noah's family being the only people trusted to use time travel. Fair en...more

Noah Zarc: Mammoth Trouble is a clever play on the biblical story of Noah's Ark, with a futuristic story line. The earth has been rendered unliveable by a cataclysmic event thousands of years previously. The Zarc family are dedicated to collecting pairs of every species, which are kept on a gigantic "space ship" that the Zarcs have built to keep them safe until the earth will support life again. At that time they will be returned to it, to repopulate it with animals.

The story of Noah Zarc is set in a future post-apocalyptic world where a cataclysm has rendered earth uninhabitable and killed off all plant and animal life. Mankind, being ingenious and highly adaptable, survive by moving to Mars and Venus. The Zarcs have been given the mission to travel back in time and bring back a male and female of each of the lost species to re-populate earth with the lost animals. This is of course a direct reference to the bible story of ‘Noah’s Arc’.

Noah Zarc: Mammoth Trouble is the story of a family from the future that time travels back to a pre-apocalypse Earth to save animals and make the planet habitable again.
Normally I am not a huge fan of sci-fi fantasy stuff like this. Noah Zarc attracted me because of its fun pun name, and its environmental theme appealed to me. Reading it reminded me why I fell in love with SF in 6th grade. If I had read this book at age 10, I think it would have made me love SF just as much as reading Asimov did. If you like the non-stop action and humor of Rick Riordan’s Olympians books, I think you’ll also like Noah Zarc.

The plot of this novel is nicely developed with a pacing that will appeal to its core audience – tween boys. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, told from the perspective of twelve-year-old Noah. With the help of his brother Hamilton and sister Sam, Noah will take embark on a vital mission: to rescue their parents. Young readers will find themselves glued to the pages as Noah and his siblings begin the journey to save their father from the Ice Age and to rescue their kidnapped mot...more
I have to admit that when I first began this book (2 days ago!), I was somewhat dreading it. I don't honestly know why except that I am not a science fiction enthusiast, and I had hoped that my daughter would be able to read this book in my place. She is the science fiction aficionado, but when I saw the length of the book, I knew it was beyond her years. So I began the book with the intention of just reading it and not fully enjoying it.

I never thought I would enjoy a book written for children as much as I did “Noah Zarc”. What first caught my eye, is the beautiful and appropriate book cover. If I saw it on a shelf in a bookstore, I would’ve purchased it right there and then.

Noah Zarc: Mammoth Trouble, by D. Robert Pease, proved to be a delightful read overall. The main character, Noah Zarc, is a twelve year old struggling to survive against the oppression of his older siblings. The eldest is his sister, Sam, a gear head who is filling in as the caretaker of her two younger brothers while the Zarc parents are off collecting animals for their modern space arc. Next, is Hamilton, a total egg head who seems to understand physics much better than social interaction. Rou...more

Noah Zarc: Mammoth Trouble is a wonderful novel written by D. Robert Pease. It’s set in the future and tells of 12 year-old Noah, a paraplegic boy who lives with his family on a large spaceship called the Arc. Told from Noah’s point of view, he introduces us to his family: sister Sam, brother Hamilton, father Noah Sr., mother Hannah and his dog, Obadiah. The family has a special mission: to go back in time to retrieve specimens of extinct animals and bring them forward to the future. This is imp...more
A thousand years in the future, mankind has practically destroyed the Earth, wreaking havoc on its environment and animals before being forced to relocate to Mars and Venus while the Earth slowly recovers. The Zarc family is allowed to travel back in time to save two animals of every species from extinction, and bring them to new habitats on their ship, the ARC--Animal Rescue Cruiser—in order to repopulate the Earth when it is ready. To most people, the Zarcs are interplanetary heroes. To Haon,...more
I loved this story! It was fresh and fast paced and as the title tells you it's based loosely on Noah's Ark, but this Noah is part of the family Zarc and their spaceship is called the ARC. It's huge, large enough to house ten blue whales in a natural enough habitat that they won't be crowded and elephants on a realistic African savanna. Their mission is to travel through time saving a male and female of each species of every animal so they can repopulate the planet Earth. Earth experienced a cat...more
Science Fiction has nearly always been one of my least favorite genres to read so it was with a great amount of reluctance that I picked up this book. Noah Zarc is a 12 year old paraplegic in a family of time travelers who live primarily in the 31st century. As the story opens Noah's parents have traveled back to earth into the 84th century B.C. in an attempt to rescue some Irish Deer. Noah and his siblings, Samantha, age 17, and Hamilton, age 14, have been left behind in the Animal Rescue Cruis...more

I loved it! It was a really fun and fast-paced read that had me on the edge of my seat. It was really very enjoyable. This is more of a middle-grade book, and while I usually read YA, I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It was a fun futuristic take on the story of Noah's Ark with space and time travel. I didn't understand all the time travel stuff, but most of the characters didn't either so it didn't really throw me off.

The characters are endearing and the story has such depth and true emotion throughout. The story is full of danger, boyish determination, and fantastic adventure. Finding good science fiction books to recommend to my junior high students can be a challenge. So many of the books in this genre are written for a more mature reader and often contain strong language or adult situtations that are just inappropriate for a younger teenage reader. Normally I don't read juvenile fiction, but this book was a pleasant surprise. I really liked it and found myself reading way past midnight to finish it.
Let me elaborate (mild spoiler alert).

Especially not in a future where he can zip around in his magchair, float in zero-g and use electrical prosthetic legs. Besides, it's not in his character.
