I have to admit that I haven't read much poetry but it was one of my goals this year because I find it interesting. My criteria for whether I like a poet is whether I understand the poems they write, if it speaks to me on some level. In this case, I really enjoyed Karstic Rivers. Most of the poems have a playful nature to them that I found appealing, even the ones dealing with death or sorrow. Born on a beach, I have found I am never far from a large body of water, even in the wilds of Texas.

The first poem I ever wrote was in first grade, a wonky little October ditty:

This is the night of Halloween
When witches and ghosts
May be seen.

Not quite a haiku. But close.
