Christine Cunningham
This story is about the coming of age of Ari. The story begins with Ari studying for her Bat Mitzvah with Evan. She finds intellectual fulfillment in the study and later finds romantic fulfillment with Evan. The story ebbs and flows with Ari’s experience with the paranormal as well as her inner conflict with wanting to be accepted for herself and her conflict with religion.

I could relate to the way Ari questioned her place as a woman within the patriarchal scene of religion. Her questions were n...more

Though the description makes it sound as though the actual story begins once Ari's client disappears, the fact is that the book actually travels through Ari's life and the disappearance doesn't happen until near the end. As a character, Ari is fascinating. She's a bit unusual but still goes through the every day trials that all of us do. As a story, it's mostly just interesting. I wouldn't say I was intrigued or anxiously flipping from page to page to see what happens next. Basically, I sat back...more

I received this book through the Goodreads First Reads program.

This novel covers several years in the life of Ari Rothman, a young Jewish girl learning about who she is, whether through her exploration of her spirituality and the importance of religion in her life, or through what she learns as a therapist in training.

While I am familiar with many of the Jewish traditions mentioned in the book I found the author often mentioned terms I hadn't heard before. This was also true in the second part o...more

The idea of a therapist with knowing intuition whose dream experiences guide her was quite intriguing. What's interesting about this book is the education into Jewish studies.

It begins with the adult Ari who is studying to be a psychologist. Flash back to Ari growing up, her relationship with her family, her first love, and her graduate studies. it appears she is a young girl who has it all. Until she sees her first clinical patient. As she counsels James, Ari finds her own thoughts and feeling...more

4 Stars out of 5: a good example of the strengths of literary style which will appeal to fans of slower, more meditative reading experiences. Not as well structured or plotted as it could have been, but executed with technical expertise where scenes, dialogue and characterization are concerned. Readers interested in contemplating the intersection of psychology and religion will find Ms. Glick’s novel well developed and rendered with complexity, even where it is lacking in narrative momentum.

My Opinion:
I had my ups and downs with this one. I liked the book in some ways, don’t get me wrong, but it just lacked luster for me. It dedicated a lot of its writing to the ins and outs of growing up in Ari’s world. On this point, I did find the story rather enlightening since I am not familiar with many of the Jewish religious ways. I was so glad that I wasn’t lost for most of the book because the author did explain most of these traditions. I felt that the issue with the missing patient shou...more

From the first few chapters of the book it was hard to keep my interest. There were times where I really did enjoy the book but there we also times where it was all I could do to finish reading it. I did love the characters but I found that some places were super boring.

Psychologically and Spiritually Satisfying!

I read this book in 3 sittings - compelling characters and thoughtful, truthful moments...

I did like this story although the end seemed a bit abrupt. What I didn't like were all the formatting errors, typos and all around bad presentation. The formatting made this very easy story, hard to read. I am of course speaking of the Kindle edition. I would hope the printed editions are better, but doubt it. A proofreader, an editor and a good typist are sorely needed here.
