Mitunter angenehm schräger Gesellschaftsroman um den Titelgebenden Captain Tatham, der eine Insel als sein Eigentum deklariert, dort viel Gold und ein ganz besonderes Rennpferd findet, mit diesem Pferd nach England zurück kehrt und an Pferderennen teilnimmt, sowie das Herz einer Dame namens Eve Smith gewinnt und die Besitzansprüche der Insel letztlich erfolgreich gegen andere Nationen abwehren muss. The story of a man who founds his own colony on an uninhibited island returns to England to find true love and manages to keep the island out of the hands of various foreign powers.
A book that started out quite interestingly, told by various narrators in the form of an official document, that loses it's way at around the halfway point and becomes fairly conventional, for the English sections and has a rushed conclusion.

Starts out a bit slow, but once it gets going, it is quite a charming story. I found it most intriguing as a character study.
