I found this to be a promising start to a new military series, the premise is really good, a bunch of kick-ass female assassins run by Noelle, drop-dead gorgeous and totally cool and a bunch of mercs(all former military), run by filthy rich Jim Morgan, their team specializes in extraction.

And speaking of Kane... Wow. As with all of Ms. Kennedy’s heroes, I absolutely wish he could show up on my doorstep. Kane is every bit as lethal as Abby, but he’s also caring and, I must say, off-the-charts sexy. I loved Kane and Abby together and they were a great emotional center for MIDNIGHT RESCUE.

Kane’s team of mercenaries and Abby’s fellow assassins round out MIDNIGHT RESCUE, ensuring that there are many more KILLER INSTINCTS novels that I am dying to read. I could go on about the characters whose stories I’d love to read, but that would make this a very, very long review. Suffice it to say, Ms. Kennedy’s skill at creating fascinating characters is at full force in MIDNIGHT RESCUE.

With its dark, edgy tone, passionate love story and deadly protagonists, MIDNIGHT RESCUE is a sure-fire win for fans of romantic suspense. I’m looking forward to re-reading Kane and Abby’s, and I cannot wait to read the next KILLER INSTINCTS book!

High octane thrill ride with a dynamic cast of mercenaries and assassins.

The mercenaries are headed by Jim Morgan. He has recruited men for every branch of the military both in and out of the US.

The assassins are headed by Noelle who contracts out her team like Jim’s for government agencies and sometimes civilians. Her group of girls are called chameleons because you never see them coming and they could change their appearances at the drop of a hat.

Abby Sinclair’s mission didn’t go bad. She was all set to kill Luis Blanco when she found out he had 13 young girls in a bunker under a prison that he was preparing for a sale. She blew her cover on purpose to be put in the prison so she could rescue the girls. She is severely beaten by Luis right hand man but even hurt she manages to pay him back for some of his pain. What she had not counted on was being rescued and once she awakes on the mercenaries’ compound she is not a happy camper. She immediately wants to go back and rescue those girls even though she is in no shape to do so.

Abby is a cold hearted assassin. Feels no emotion and sex is nothing but a means to an end to get a mark. At least that’s what she’s convinced herself of until Kane starts to break down the walls she erected all those years ago after the horrible things that were done to her. Kane isn’t looking for a relationship either after one he had in college ended tragedy but there is something about Abby that he can’t help but try chip away at the ice around her heart.

The other mercenaries and assassins we are introduced to play a big part in the book too. I think I am probably like every other person that read this book and can’t wait for Isabel and Trevor book with Noelle and Jim being a close second. Derek “D” Pratt is also a mystery that I can’t wait for the author to give us more on.

Great start to a series and I can’t wait to go read the next book.

This is an extremely rape- and child sexual abuse- heavy book. I found it extremely difficult to read as the book continually dwells on and brings up the most traumatic events in every characters' life.

I found it very difficult to be open to any romance/sexual interest between the hero and the heroine as it is very literally sandwiched between more revelations of childhood SA and ongoing emotional torture by the main villain. I just can't get into that. It quite literally made me queasy.

This is my first time reading this author...but I am definitely reading her again (ONLY this series though). Unlike her other books' that seem to focus heavily on the sex part (and...going toward threesome, orgy & BDSM from what i read on the descriptions of the books), this series has more a plot and interesting character developments. Don't worry there is still sex...but the whole story bring lead readers to care about the characters and chemistry when they finally have sex.

This was such an awesome story, I couldn’t put it down. Abby is a tough as nails woman who is fearless when it comes to her job as an assassin. She will use anything to accomplish her job. Abby’s childhood is horrible and I can hardly imagine how a child will turn out after such a beginning in life. Kane Woodland is a former SEAL and has been working with the mercenary team for several years and is Jim Morgan’s second in command. Abby and Kane find they have an immediate connection and although he would like to pursue it, Abby has closed herself off from all feelings and does not trust Kane enough to support his pursuit. The only thing that is on Abby’s radar at the moment is to heal from her wounds and rescue those girls from Blanco and she will do anything to achieve it. Abby talks both Noelle and Morgan into helping with her plan of rescue the girls, they even bring in a few mercenaries from other places. While planning Kane receives phone calls from Devlin asking about Abby, trying to find out where she is and as soon as he finds Abby is with Kane and the team, he will only talk to her. Devlin obtains past information about Abby, tormenting her with the pain from her past in order to bring her out of hiding so he can get his revenge.

As the team plans the rescue and Abby deals with what to do about Devlin, she and Kane grow closer together and start forming a bond. Since Abby is unable to trust, the bond is stretched thin at times as Abby takes things into her own hands, jeopardizing the rescue of the girls as well as the tenuous relationship with Kane.

A wonderful exciting story that keeps you guessing and engaged until the end as you feel a part of the team. The characters are believable and the back stories keeps your interest as you want to find out what happens in the end. I enjoyed the relationship with Kane and Abby as well as the secondary characters that also seem to have a connection that could be developed in future books, both Noelle and Morgan and Isobel and Trevor all had connections that hopefully will be in the next in the series.

I've read and love Elle's 'Out of Uniform' series. I read the blurb for Midnight Rescue and was intruiged by the plot!

Love the characters of Kane & Abby. The part of the story involving Isabel & Trevor has some interesting dynamics....Will be good to see how things pan out for the couple in Midnight Games (Bk #3)

Did not care for the Abby's character at all. She was too everything. The entire group of "elite" female assassins seemed hokey to me. Abby's character got on my last nerve and it was a struggle for me to finish this book, but I did. Slowly.

Abby Sinclair is one of the best assassins in the world, her late adoptive father made sure of it, but on assignment she discovers a secret that strikes too close to home and her horrible childhood. Abby with stop at nothing to finish what she considers her new mission and even the sexy Kane Woodland can persuade her to stop. Kane may be the only chance she has at successfully completing her task but convincing him and his co-workers for help soon become her biggest challenge.

I am not usually a fan of this type of genre of books and have never caught on to the military hero craze but this book was amazing and has changed my mind completely. The men in this book are alpha to the core and each one is so unique. Mrs. Kennedy did a great job of introducing all the men so that you are given just enough about them to really want to read their book. It’s brilliant and I am eagerly counting down the days until the second installment in the Killer Instincts series.

Abby Sinclair has gone through a lot of stuff and none of it is sugar coated which I liked. Abby has major trust issues and because we are given so much of her background they are very understandable. To say my heart broke for her is an understatement but I was so happy with the way Kane handled her and got her to open up. Abby is a very strong but at the same time fragile woman and I love that she can kick ass with no problem but has a hard time trusting anyone. The contradictions made her very fun and interesting to read about.

This is by all means an action-military-romance novel. Mrs. Kennedy does very deep and shows us how spies work with false names and disguises. I loved reading about this and it was so different from most other books of this genre. This is a fast paced, action filled, oh-my-god-what's-going-to happen-next ride and I never wanted to get off. The next book can’t come fast enough and I can’t wait to see what crazy stuff this bunch does next. (less)

This is when it gets good as the reader is introduced to a group of exciting new characters. A team consisting of ex Navy SEAL's, black op agents, and men from other government agencies put together a plan of action to rescue Abby. Kane Woodland is one of the men that rescues Abby and after getting her to a secure location, he learns of her true intentions. While working undercover she discovers that something much more sinister is going on during her assignment and wants to put a stop to it. He agrees to help her once she is done healing from her injuries and it's at this time that they get to know each other better.

There aren't a whole lot of people that know about Abby's past but she lets Kane in and shares it with him. During this time she not only heals from her external injuries but from the internal ones as well. She feels something with Kane that she's never felt with anyone else and begins to feel a sense of relief when she realizes that she can have love in her life and that it's a good thing for her. She's always guarded her emotions and as far as sex was concerned, it was only used on the job to get what she wanted. Kane realizes this about her and takes the role of teacher to show her that pleasure can be a good thing. They take it nice and slow and there are lots of steamy scenes as Abby gives into the passion that she's never experienced. I loved that Kane was gentle and patient with her. It was all about Abby and her allowing herself to give in to passion and enjoying it.

This series is going to be an exciting and interesting one because of the complex characters. They are more than people that have certain talents, they have feelings and care about others. They know when something is wrong and want to make it right. They want to make a difference and set out to do that. Elle Kennedy does an excellent job with these characters and makes the reader look forward to learning more about each one of them. I enjoyed her writing style as the storyline flowed from scene to scene. She left me wanting for more when I reached the end of the book and the it also stayed on my mind for the next couple of days after reading it. Those are the type of stories that I enjoy the most and I'm looking forward to seeing what the characters will tackle in the next book in the series. (less)

These two wounded people coming together was a beautiful thing!

What a great start to a new series! I've read many of Elle's books and I gotta say, I love her writing, and this is at the top of my favorites list now. It was a really fantastic story full of action, adventure, humor and some pretty sexy love scenes. Oh and let's not forget the incredibly funny women assassins. Those chicks are seriously funny and I wouldn't ever cross them because they're pretty scary too.

From the very beginning of the book I was sucked in by Abby, I wanted to hug her and be her friend, I wanted to kill the people that hurt her and I seriously wanted to be her. She's one kick ass babe. She could fight with the big boys, literally! Kane, well he's my dream man really. I sure do love the big bad wounded soldiers and he's definitely that. He doesn't like to show feeling but when he did, man it was so sweet! No one could have handled Abby as well as him and it was really heart warming to see Abby finally open up to someone and the banter between the two was so funny! They really are the perfect match!

I loved the other characters as well, especially the women! I'm really looking forward to the next book which I'm assuming is going to be Trevor and Isabel's book from reading the sneak peek at the end of the book. Now that is sure to be one great story! Both of them are sure to be put up one hell of a fight and boy do I love that! ;)

This book was well written, just like any Elle Kennedy book is, and the characters are well developed. I'm very much looking forward to reading future installments in this series. I give this book 4.5 Moons and I recommend it to all Elle Kennedy fans, Romantic Suspense fans and most contemporary Romance fans too. This was my first time reading anything by Elle Kennedy. It is also the first in her A Killer Instincts series. Ms. Kennedy’s other two series, Out of Uniform and Welcome to Paradise are labeled* erotic romance. Midnight Rescue definitely had its hot parts, but mostly the plot was centered on the rescue of young victims of a sex trade operation.

Midnight Rescue definitely had its hot parts, but mostly the plot was centered on the rescue of young victims of a sex trade operation.

Abby Sinclair is our heroine. She is tough, strong, unbelievably kick-ass, independent and a skilled assassin. She was rescued by her adoptive father from a life of prostitutes, drugs, and perverted foster fathers. In other words, she has some baggage and she doesn’t open up or trust anyone with that baggage. Her adoptive father, an ex-Ranger, trained her how to become the skilled assassin that she is now.

Kane Woodland, is an ex-military guy that grew up with an almost perfect childhood. He finds himself strangely attracted to Abby after him and his team evacuate her from Mr. Blanco’s, a Colombian drug lord (who is also into the sex slave trade), prison. While undercover trying to get close to Blanco, Abby finds the young victims of Blanco’s sick slave trade and tries to come up with a plan to get the girls out, but things go awry and Kane and his team are sent into Colombia.

Abby finds herself having to trust Kane and his men to get the girls out of Blanco’s prison. The real bad ass in this story is not Blanco, although he is a sick pig, it is main security man, William Devlin, that is the most twisted psychopath in the story. He is out for revenge against Abby. Abby and Devlin’s showdown is everything a reader wants in good vs. bad world.

Abby and Kane are seriously drawn together and the intimate scenes are genuinely romantic and intense. The other operatives in the story will probably be featured in the rest of the series, which is good, because the heat between Trevor & Isabel is scorching and the tension between Morgan & Noelle is thick enough to cut with a hot knife. I also hope Luke, D, Ethan and Sullivan get a chance to find their mates.

I rate this 4.5 stars out of 5, just because I like more heat in my stories. If you like romantic suspense, military fiction, and a hero & heroine that kick major ass, this book is right up your alley.

I really liked the secondary plot with Isabel and Trevor. I believe the next book is their's. I'm looking forward to reading it.

Unfortunately that's the only thing I liked about the book. The actions of the characters didn't jive with their secretive professions. The hero especially acted more like a hotheaded woman than a cold assassin. She is mad bad and dangerous. Abby Sinclair is on a mission. She was sent to take out a Columbian bad guy but when she finds out he has several little girls he plans to sell she goes off mission to rescue them. She is aided by a mercenary group where she meets Kane. He is rough, tough and takes no guff. She is not used to working or playing with others. Kane has met his match in Abby and if they live through this he may even get to prove it to her.

I liked this book for the most part but I did have some qualms with it. I'm not sure I liked the perspective switches that were throughout. It was kind of hard to follow and seemed a bit arbitrary at times. I liked the story line and the strong female characters (not so much that they were only strong because they were mistreated/abused) but it seemed very campy to me. A lot of the dialog between Kane and Abby seemed a bit cliche and the thoughts that Trevor gave mind to seemed to be formulaic....more

Shelves: romantic-suspense

I opened up my newest romantic suspense novel, and what did I find? Well, we have a damaged soul turned kickass heroine and a bunch of hot special ops men out to save the world from the bad guys. Obviously, readers will have seen this plot before. Even if some of the trappings feel familiar, Elle Kennedy does them justice and Midnight Rescue ends up being an entertaining read. Those who enjoy action romances will likely want to pick this one up.

This was an average special-ops romance, that relied a bit too much on the secondary characters to carry the story forward. The main couple only got about half of this book, the rest is hogged by various other characters' viewpoints, including the bad guys'. The majority of the characters were completely over-the-top, especially Noelle, and though this is to be expected to a point when it comes to romance novels, I was still disappointed.

Abby Sinclair is the second best assassin in the world, but we didn't see her doing anything 'assassin-y' or badass throughout the story. She whined about how she was not a 'normal' person, how horrible her past had been, and we learned how stubborn and cold she could be. She had trusting issues, which was understandable but then got to the point of being annoying. Overall Abby wasn't a bad heroin, but I wasn't that impressed with her either.

Midnight Rescue was a surprise for me! Not because I wasn't expecting it to be good, but because I was afraid to pick a romantic suspense book after all my mediocre choices within this genre over the past months. And I'm glad to say, that finally, I got a book that warmed me up to the genre again :)

Midnight Rescue is the story of Abby, a strong and deeply wounded both physically and emotionally assassin, member of an elite team of female assassins run by the elusive Noelle (whose story I so want to read by the way) and Kane, member of an elite team himself, who has his own set of scars and fears.

Reading their story, was fascinating! I always like my heroes to be a little tortured, not because I'm some kind of sadist but because those characters, present certain challenges and have more interest in seeing them overcome their personal problems and pursue their HEA. And Abby is certainly one of those characters with her past. The nightmare she had to live through has deeply affected her in the present, the way she perceives human interaction and sexual relationships. Seeing her overcome all those issues and getting close to Kane was beyond interesting. And Kennedy did an excellent job in describing and building her character. Abby is one of the strongest female characters I have ever encountered.

Kane on the other hand, is your typical alpha hero to drool all over, I enjoyed reading about him, but his character development wasn't so great as Abby's. Sure, Kennedy did a splendid job building not only her main characters, but the secondary ones as well, but I think that Kane needed a little bit more work.

And now that I mentioned the secondary characters, I just have to say it. One of the best things about Midnight Rescue is how along with the main story, Kennedy explored, more than I expected, the story of some of the secondary characters making me feel at times that I was reading not only Abby and Kane's story but Isabel and Trevor's as well. Their story was a great addition in an already great story, spicing things up even more and wetting my appetite for the future installments in this series. I mean Isabel and Trevor intrigued me. And I want to read their story like right now :)

The plot was full of action and twists, the villain was a psychopath like many others out there, but the whole setting, the description of the "final battle" and how they saved those girls at the end was genius and kept me at the edge of my seat.

All in all, Midnight Rescue is a great military romance title that I devoured in one sitting and I can't wait to get my hands on the next books in this series. Totally recommend it.(less)

This one was great, I loved the two groups of people, the all female assassin group and the all male mercenary group. Both groups seem to work the same type of jobs, just go about it in different ways.

Abby sort of scares me. In some ways I admire her, especially after hearing her story grown up, but anyone who lets themselves get caught and then tortured makes me wonder how sane she really is. In theory her plan was a good one, but she was too beaten up to make it work.
