A fantastically done portrait of royal life in pre-Classical Mycenae, Sparta, and surrounding lands, Helen's Daughter takes the reader on a vivid journey through the lives and experiences of some familiar characters of legend...but their humanity is very real.

I have lots to rave about here. It's a little difficult to find the right place to start, so I'm just going to jump in anywhere.

This is the way historical fiction ought to be done: packed with those little details which bring another time a

When Helen sailed off to Troy with Paris, she left behind her nine year old daughter. While I might have been able to come up with her name, Hermione, I would have been hard pressed to remember anything else about her. Laura Gill has changed that with her excellent book. I felt like I really got to know Hermione and understand her problems. And she did have some challenges in her life. Besides being abandoned by her mother (and then by her father who went off with the Greek army to reclaim Helen ...more

Note: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Even though I felt the story started out a little slow it was captivating from the beginning. Hermione had a strong presence throughout the book and showed true character in the face of everything she had to put up with. Throughout the whole story her plight is revealed but the author does not write her as someone to be pitied but more of someone who has the strength and courage to live through anything, she is someone t

Typically these types of historical renditions focus on main characters in history. This was a little outside of that in that it focuses on the daughter of Helena of Troy and how she perceived the events that her mother was so famous for. As the story unfolded it gave me insight into the types of these events and the fact that people outside of the main happenings of that time were oblivious to what was really going on. I guess what really hit me was the fact that now when events happen in one p ...more

A very intriguing story told by Hermione, the daughter of Helen of Troy. Not only does the story tell of her personal experiences but of the after math of the war and how it affected many of it's participants both the willing and unwilling. An amazing amount of events take place that had me glued to the end. I felt like I was truly witnessing the ceremonies, rituals etc. as though I was walking within the palace walls wearing a white Spartan gown and sandals on my feet. This author gives great d ...more

I liked it overall. It was a unique take on some classic Greek characters. My only complaints, which are the reason for the 4 out 5 stars, are that the Kindle version is riddled with editing errors that make it a little hard to wade through at times. That isn't the author's fault, but DOES affect the enjoyment of the book. Plus, I thought the last 1/4th of the book was a bit rushed and weak. Its not as bad as the end of the Harry Potter series, so don't let that make you turn away from the book. ...more
