Alien spirit guides, colored auras, and healing experiences - these are just a few parts of Jonathan Talat Phillips's "The Electric Jesus" that may make a skeptic raise an eyebrow. But this book isn't antithetical to skepticism, and it isn't a departure from logic or rationalism. I consider myself a skeptical person, and it has no bearing on my acceptance and love for these spiritual and mystical experiences brought on by plant medicines, most notably, ayahuasca, the "star" plant of this book.

Phillips, too, regards all that he experiences with a healthy dose of skepticism. So for those of you wary that this is book about a person's plunge into blind faith, it's actually quite the opposite. All that Phillips discusses in his book is actually experienced by him - he isn't touting any mystical claims of which only vague ideas exist.

What resonated most with me while reading "The Electric Jesus" was the honesty and the openness regarding Phillips's own personal issues. They say that the same stories repeat themselves over and over, and this is true for people too. So although my life and my struggles are obviously not identical to Phillips's, the fact that I could empathize so strongly only deepened and intensified my appreciation for what he ended up learning and discovering about himself. Phillips is also well-versed in the subjects that he discusses (Gnosticism, mysticism, Sufism, etc.), and the combination of intelligence and unabashed honesty makes for a really important addition to psychedelic literature. Phillips's vivid personality shines in this book - there is humor and quirky, revealing moments. It reminds me a bit of Terence McKenna, another psychedelic author and researcher whose gift of gab and strong personality are a prominent aspect of his works.

This book is for virtually anyone: those who have done psychedelics themselves, apprehensive but curious potential-psychonauts, those merely looking for a well-written and richly told story, and even those who dismiss this as nonsense. In fact, I would urge the latter to read this the most - you may find yourself surprised. :] (less)

Shelves: give-away

Now that I've had a bit of time to reflect, this book seems shallower and slimmer than it did after I finished reading. In retrospect this seems like one of those books written as a career move. Hold this up side by side with a book of similar conceit (how I got where I am today, and all the weird adventures I had along the way), such as Robert Anton Wilson's Cosmic Trigger, and it is glaringly obvious.
