part of my Nora Roberts search
This is one of my favorite Nora Roberts books. Actually, the first time I read it, I thought it was good, but didn't love it. But for whatever reason, the story stuck in my head and I found myself wanting to read it again. So I did, about a year later, I guess. And it became one of my favorites.
The book has a little bit of everything, which is perhaps why I like it so much. Love and betrayal, family reunions, horses, mystery, self-discovery...and so much more. I enjoy the story alone because of...more

Nora Roberts is easily my favourite author. Whenever I go to a book store, the first author I look out for is her. "True Betrayals" follows the story of a girl still discovering herself, and the truth behind her past. Through the search for self-discovery, Kelsey meets not only some long lost relatives, but finds romance among her new life. Mystery is worked into the plot of the novel through the mysterious deaths and pasts of the characters.

This is easily one of my favorite NR books (the others being: tribute, carnal innocence, genuine lies, public secrets, and private scandals). The books is very similar to the other books listed in that the character development is so well done. You begin to understand these characters and their motivations right from the beginning. The characters are smart, funny, and loving. NR can also do what no other author has quite mastered to her level which is combine suspense and romance so wonderfully....more
If I had known this book had horse-racing in it, I would have never picked it up and I would have missed out on a great book. Now I should explain that I love horse-racing, but rarely does a book capture the actual thrill of it and make you feel like you are there, this book does that.

Competent, as all NR's are. You can always trust her for a good, solid story.
Kelsey has just finalized her divorce when she receives a letter from the mother she thought was dead. Turns out her mom was convicted of murder and spent 10 years in prison, but she and her father decided it was best if Kelsey thought she was dead.

Listened to the audio cassette version in order to check for reported damage to library copy- it played just fine (patron probably needed new batteries in their player-grumble, grumble.) The setting in the world of thoroughbred racing had lots of color and showed that Roberts is comfortable in the horse world so that was OK but otherwise I found it far too long and drawn-out a story. . .really dragged for me. This was my first (and probably only) sampling of the unfathomably popular Roberts. Ha...more
I'm a sucker for stories set in the world of racehorses, or horses in general, so True Betrayals had an advantage going in. That said, I wasn't overly impressed with the book. Part of that was that the pacing which, especially in the first half, was slow. The reader gets introduced to all the players but not a whole lot else happens. Secondly, it took me a while to warm up the Kelsey. I didn't dislike her, and was even sympathetic, but she's a very reserved individual and it comes across. Perhap...more
Another enjoyable read by Nora Roberts. It's not going to be one of my favorites of hers, but it was still good. I liked the whole setting in the world of horseracing --- definitely something else for a change. I also liked the characters - particularly Kelsey, her step-brother Channing and her mother Naomi. Gabe was okay as a male lead character, but for some reason the romance between him and Kelsey didn't really convince me.

I could start by telling you how much I love Nora and nearly all her writing, but if you read my reviews that much is clear.
So instead, I'll just stress this novel and its impact. I loved it. I loved it enough to give five stars which I don't always do with Nora's works.
Kelsey lives in rose-colored world until she finally steps out of her life and into her mother's home at her horse ranch. She and her mother are so-to-speak estranged from her mother's time in prison for murder. She meets her mo...more

Altogether not a bad book. It does often seem like a rewrite of Robert's first book "Irish Thoroughbred" and its sequels. The horse and racing elements of the books were generally researched well. The glaring contradiction to this is the "euthanasia" drug used to murder the groom. I am a horse owner and worked for an equine vet at one point. Acepromazine is a light tranquilizer that is readily available, and most tack rooms have a vial somewhere. It is NOT one of the highly controlled barbiturat...more

Pois bem, encontrei neste a 3ª. E são todas mulheres. Estranho...

Same old lust-at-first-sight and sex scenes that are just moved from book to book automatically. Nora Roberts is a better writer than she thinks she is. Though the surface plot is obvious, the issues and subplots are really good, sometimes thought-provoking. The use of horseracing as a background made for interesting settings and descriptions. I wish she would ditch the hash and write a novel worthy of herself.

This was a really good book. I love any story that has horses and racing. There is just something majestic about a racehorse. True Betrayals had a steady pace and I was never bored. I would rate this a PG book, not much steam but a nice romance developing. It has mystery, murder, mayham and of course betrayal. I would recommend it to anyone that likes a good mystery and a little romance.
I think if i picked up the hard-copy I wouldn't have read it because it didn't little snippet on the back really didn't appeal to me but i got the audio book free of charge and decided to give it a listen. It was a really good story and i hated having to interrupt my listening sessions to do other things so the story kept me interested but i think im glad i listened to it instead of reading it. im not sure if that makes sense.

I'll just say this in lieu of a review:
Each time you pick a Nora Roberts novel, you are in for the best of its kind.
The story is always well-researched and NR almost always finds another theme that she hasn't used before in one of her books. Variety make her works the best and simply something you are sure you'll like at the end. You can always depend on her.

This was one of her better stand-alone novels. Most of the story revolves around the world of horse racing, which I knew nothing about prior. Now, I have this strange urge to actually see one! The characters all had so many levels, and while I had my guesses for the ones involved in the mystery/murders, it wasn't until the very end that it was brought together... excellent book!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kelsey Byden discovers, after years of thinking otherwise, that her mother is alive, and has spent said years in prison. Furious, Kelsey confronts her father and leaves for a trip to meet this woman that had been cut from her life. There, Kelsey discovers an entirely new world--the horse world, and she gets sucked in. She finds her mother isn't so bad, and she finds Gabe--the gambling neighbor and their competition. And while they are becoming involved, bad things start happening. Accidents with...more
True Betrayals seemed a little long to get into the jist of the story. You could tell it was an earlier work of Nora. I liked the idea of the mother and murder but felt like Kelsey moved a bit too fast to the farm and her relationship with Gabe. Overall I enjoyed it though and glad it is in my growing collection.
I'm a sucker for a good romance novel... blend that with intrigue, suspense, mystery and you will get one of the most engaging novels I've read. I found myself being immersed in the world of Championship Thoroughbred Racing. Nora Roberts painted an enjoyable picture of the Racing World. A delightful read!
